Formal Groups & Development Stages

Formal groups serve several important functions: [1] To accomplish complex tasks that individuals cannot do alone; [2] To bring together diverse skills and talents; [3] To provide a means for decision making that considers multiple perspectives. Groups also develop through five stages: [1] Forming where members get to know each other; [2] Storming where tensions can arise as members compete for status; [3] Norming where cooperation increases as norms are established; [4] Performing where tasks are accomplished efficiently through defined roles; [5] Adjourning which occurs when time-limited groups conclude their work.

GROUP DEVELOPMENT:
FIVE STAGE MODEL OF GROUP DEVELOPMENT

FORMING

STORMING

NORMING

PERFORMING

ADJOURNING

FORMING
At the first stage, group members get introduced to each other if they have not interacted earlier. They share personal information, start to accept others and begin to turn their attention towards group tasks.

STORMING
In this stage members start interaction among themselves in the form of competing for status, fighting for relative control and arguing for appropriate strategies to be adopted foe achieving groups goals. Because of individual differences, tension may be caused.

NORMING
After storming stage, group members start settling. The group starts moving in a cooperative fashion, and a tentative balance among competing forces is struck. At this stage group members form cooperative feelings and coordination among other members.

PERFORMING
When group members interact among themselves on the basis of norms that have emerged in the group, they learn to handle complex problems that come before the group. Functional roles are performed and exchanged as needed, and tasks are accomplished efficiently.

ADJOURNING
Sooner or later, each group has to be adjourned, even the most successful groups. The adjournment phase takes place in the case of those groups which are created for some special purposes like task force, committee etc. After the adjournment, intense social relationship between the members comes to an end.
