This document discusses potential issues that may occur when using Veritas NetBackup software with Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) and provides solutions. Specifically, it addresses that:
1) Individual files cannot be backed up or restored through NDMP, as the software is designed for backing up entire directory structures.
2) The expiration date cannot be set through the GUI for NDMP backups and must instead be set using the bpexpdate command line tool.
3) Tapes cannot be erased or formatted within the NetBackup software and must be expired using bpexpdate before they can be overwritten.

A P P E N 0 X F Verros Nerockup lssues This appendix describes problems that may occur while you use Veritas NetBackup software using Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP). Where possible, it also explains how to resolve these problems. ockng 0p or kesrorng lndvduoI FIes You cannot back up or restore individual files through NDMP with Veritas NetBackup. is generated if this is attempted. The software is designed to back up entire directory structures and is not oriented toward single-file backups and restores. 5errng MonuoI Fxproron Dore The expiration date cannot be set through the graphical user interface (GUI) when using NDMP to backup a filer. The command bpexpdate located in the \veritas\volmgr\bin directory can be used instead at the command line. See your Veritas NetBackup documentation for a complete list of command options and syntax. Frosng or Formorrng Iopes Erasing or formatting tapes is not a supported feature of the Veritas NetBackup soft- ware. Tapes are expired through the command bpexpdate located in the \veritas\volmgr\bin directory. Once a tape has been expired it can be over written. See your Veritas NetBackup documentation for a complete list of command options and syntax. NOTE: Incompatibilities in tape formats may cause problems. For example, if you have digital linear tape (DLT) tapes used by a backup application program other than the one that wrote the tape originally, the tape may provide false error indications. You might receive no-tape-in-the-drive messages or see an indicator lit on the drive. You can avoid these false error indications by using a commercial bulk tape degausser to completely erase your old tapes before using them in your new library. This will not allow the Veritas NetBackup software to utilize the tape for future backups. Once the tape has been assigned, it can be expired using the command bpexpdate located in the \veritas\volmgr\bin directory. See your Veritas NetBackup documentation for a complete list of command options and syntax.
