U.S. Gymnasts Offer Moving Tribute to Brazilian Rival Rebeca Andrade After She Wins Gold

U.S. gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles bowed to Brazilian Rebeca Andrade as a show of respect for her gold medal performance.

Andrade, widely regarded as Biles biggest rival, won gold at the Olympics on Thursday in the women’s floor final. The win came days after Brazil finished third in the team all-around final. Andrade also won a silver medal in the vault final — behind only Biles.

On Thursday afternoon in France, Andrade finally did enough to top the greatest gymnast in the world. Making her gold medal moment even sweeter was when Biles and Chiles — who won silver and bronze, respectively — turned to her and bowed as she took her place at the top of the podium. The three of them all had a laugh while Andrade pumped her fists to the crowd.

“The U.S. girls are bowing down to her!” analyst and fellow gymnast Laurie Hernandez said.

When the Americans stood up, Adrade offered both of them a hand and the three shook hands together.

Although Biles is recognized as the face of the sport, this year’s games have cemented Andrade as another household name. The 25-year-old led Brazil to its first-ever medal in the team all-around final, and her individual scores are often the closest to Biles’ scores.
