Dr. Mario Chih-Hsiung Karl Deng is a Professor of Medicine at the David-Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He completed his studies in Medicine at Berlin University, followed by Internal Medicine and
Cardiology Board Certification. His academic profile includes: positions in postdoctoral research at Stanford University (1992/1993), Medical Director of the Interdisciplinary Heart Failure and Transplantation
Program at Muenster University (1992-2000), Director of Cardiac Transplantation
Research at Columbia University (2000-2011), Medical Director of the ISHLT-Mechanical
Circulatory Support Device Database (2001-2006) and Medical Director of the
UCLA Advanced Heart Failure/Mechanical Support/Heart Transplant program
(2011-2016). Dr. Deng co-developed the first leukocyte gene expression profiling test
in transplantation medicine to gain US-FDA clearance to rule out rejection
without biopsy (AlloMapTM), an outcome prediction test for advanced heart failure
(MyLeukoMAPTM) and, since 2021, a multi-dimensional Long-COVID outcome immunology prediction algorithm sensitive to the social vulnerabilities of veterans and civilians. Embedding systems biology within the value framework of equitable access to care, Dr. Deng collaborates with Prof. Federica Raia (UCLA DGSOM and SE&IS) in the “Relational MedicineTM” project including the Wellness Collaborative for Research and Education Activities to Transform and Empower (WeCREATE).
