One of the best parts of my job at Slack is spending time with leaders focused on a single question: how does AI actually increase the ROI from what is most often the #1 expensive of doing business. People. A clear pattern is emerging. Companies still running on email are getting modest gains from AI. Faster docs. A few automations. Slightly better efficiency. But the way work actually happens does not change, so the impact stays limited. Then you look at companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Vercel, Box,..all the AI native and leading innovators. Email barely matters. Work happens in shared spaces where people, data, systems, and agents operate with the same context. That difference is everything. These teams are not using AI to speed up old workflows. They are redesigning how work gets done. The result is one person operating at a completely different scale than in a traditional enterprise. I see it every day. The real constraint on AI productivity is not the model. It is the foundation of work beneath it. Email hides context. Shared environments surface it. And AI only works well when it can see the full picture. This shift is accelerating. Teams that move from inbox-driven habits to shared context are seeing step-change gains in productivity.
