Ada Lovelace Day Ada Lovelace was a visionary mathematician and computer scientist and we like to mark this special day, dedicated to her accomplishments, by taking the time to stop and celebrate the significant achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). This is particularly poignant for us as we have recently launched our ‘Women and Computer Science: Open Funding Round (UK)’! We have been so excited by the incredible response so far. Entries are still open for programmes aiming to support more women and non-binary identities, particularly those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, to enter and succeed in Computer Science pathways from secondary level upwards. Further details can be found on our website: https://lnkd.in/dddw_FZY Applications close on 1st November 2024. #AdaLovelaceDay

It was fantastic to visit our partnerships out in Germany last week and hear about all the great work they have been doing. We started the trip with a visit to Technical University of Munich which is about to enter its fourth year in partnership with us, followed by a visit to our newly announced partner ReDI School of Digital Integration's Munich and Hamburg locations. We had the opportunity to meet some of the participants and tutors on the Digital Career Programme in Hamburg, which our funding helps to support. Thank you for sharing your stories with us and to all for making it a brilliant visit. To find out more about our partnerships with TUM and ReDI please visit: https://lnkd.in/e6t7yUdD

We are delighted to announce our latest partnership with CodeYourFuture, a non-profit organisation that reduces social inequality by training people from underserved communities in tech and soft skills, supporting them to start careers in tech. Founded in 2016, CodeYourFuture currently operates in four cities across the UK and, to date, over 800 Trainees have taken part in their most advanced programme – the Software Development Course. With The Hg Foundation’s grant of £690,000 over the next 3 years, CodeYourFuture will be expanding their operations to three new cities across the UK to support refugees, asylum seekers, displaced migrants and low-income groups to train for and secure jobs in tech. The Hg Foundation is fully seed-funding the set up and launch of pilots in these new cities and by 2027, the pilots will have reached 1,000+ new individuals. Last week was a busy and exciting one at The Hg Foundation – we announced our latest partnership with Speakers for Schools, launched our first open funding round, and we hosted our annual reception. Check out our previous posts for more on each of these! It was also our first time bringing together our non-profit partnerships for a day of workshops and conversations to connect around our shared missions. Over 50 individuals from 26 organisations joined us as we shared successes and challenges, learned from each other, took a deep dive into impact and evaluation, and identified opportunities to collaborate and build on each other’s work. Our team left the day feeling energised by the ideas and enthusiasm in the room, and we hope all of our attendees had an insightful day too. Many thanks to those who attended, for immersing yourselves in the activities, and for having an appetite for sharing, learning, and collaborating! We hope this event will be the first of many opportunities to forge closer relationships among our portfolio of partners. We were delighted to host our third annual reception at the Science Gallery London last night! It was fantastic to have all our partnerships and friends of the Foundation together to celebrate the tremendous work of our programmes and recognise the impact they are having on the lives of so many underrepresented individuals. A very special thank you to Elona Mortimer-Zhika, our keynote speaker, for providing an interesting glimpse into her social mobility journey to her current position at IRIS Software Group. Elona also discussed the importance of accessing talent from different backgrounds to the sector, the main challenges she perceives, and what more needs to be done to address these challenges. We were also very excited to announce the official launch of our Women and Computer Science: Open Funding Round (UK)! Applications are now open for programmes aiming to support more women and non-binary identities, particularly those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, to enter and succeed in Computer Science pathways from secondary level upwards. 🌟 Breaking Down Barriers in Tech 🌟 We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with The Hg Foundation to launch #IntoTech - an ambitious initiative aimed at creating over 95,000 opportunities for underrepresented young people in the UK tech sector. With tech being the backbone of the UK economy, employing over 1.7 million people, it’s critical that we make this field accessible to all. Yet, only 9% of tech employees come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and 29% are female or non-binary. ‘IntoTech’ will address these glaring disparities through high-quality work experiences, mentorship, and inspirational talks to state school students, particularly focusing on those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Together, we can break down barriers, demystify tech careers, and shape a diverse, skilled, and future-ready tech workforce. "This partnership with The Hg Foundation is not just about opening doors—it's about breaking them down." - Nick Brook, CEO, Speakers for Schools Discover more about the partnership and how to support 👇 #SpeakersForSchools #HgFoundation #DiversityInTech #SocialMobility #Opportunity #STEM #TechForAll

We are thrilled to announce that we are partnering with Speakers for Schools to launch 'IntoTech', a UK-based tech programme that will create over 95,000 opportunities for underrepresented young people. Diversity in the UK tech sector remains a challenge, with only 9% of employees coming from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and just 29% identifying as female or non-binary. The ‘IntoTech’ programme aims to bridge this gap by demystifying careers across the sector, providing high-quality experiences of the workplace and inspiring the next generation of the tech workforce, as well as broadening the scope of who enters it.
