About us
The Protein Data Bank (PDB) was established in 1971 as the 1st open access digital data resource in all of biology and medicine. It is today a leading global resource for experimental data central to scientific discovery. Through an internet information portal and downloadable data archive, the PDB provides access to 3D structure data for large biological molecules (proteins, DNA, and RNA). These are the molecules of life, found in all organisms on the planet. Knowing the 3D structure of a biological macromolecule is essential for understanding its role in human and animal health and disease, its function in plants and food and energy production, and its importance to other topics related to global prosperity and sustainability. RCSB PDB operates the US data center for the global PDB archive, and makes PDB data available at no charge to all data consumers without limitations on usage. The Vision of RCSB PDB is to expand the frontiers of fundamental biology, biomedicine, energy sciences, and biotechnology through open and sustainable access to the 3D structure, function, and evolution of biological macromolecular data. Recognized experts in fields, including but not limited to, structural biology, cell and molecular biology, computational biology, information technology, and education serve as advisors to the RCSB PDB.

ASBMB is a proud supporter of Americans for Medical Research. Help us spread the word about the importance of federally funded medical and health research. #AmericansForMedicalResearch #ScienceServesUsAll
Over the last century, NIH-funded research has helped improve the early detection and treatment of serious diseases like breast cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and so much more. Americans are counting on that continued progress to help their loved ones live longer, healthier lives. But that progress is bound to slow unless we support medical research. https://lnkd.in/gmh9yfMw #AmericansForMedicalResearch

GLP-1 receptor agonists got their start in an unlikely place: the mouth of a lizard. A peptide that was discovered in Gila monster saliva, called exendin-4, was found to mimic the action of GLP-1 and was developed into the drug exenatide (sold under the name Byetta) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Exenatide (shown on the right, PDB 7LLL), which was the first GLP-1 receptor agonist approved by the FDA, shares just over 50% sequence identity with GLP-1, but has a similar structure and is able to activate the GLP-1 receptor, while avoiding rapid proteolytic degradation.
