Pioneers of Open Culture, a report by Creative Commons published in 2023, a couple of years ago, contains three case studies of early adopters of open GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums): The National Gallery of Art, Statens Museum for Kunst, and New York Public Library. In January 2025, life science preprint servers bioRxiv & medRxiv updated their license selector, placing CC BY at the top of the list. Just six months later, the number of CC BY-licensed preprints has increased for the first time in five years. Encouraging researchers to select CC BY as the license of choice for preprints is vital. It maximizes reuse and minimizes the complexity of navigating legal terms when sharing research. As researchers study issues like climate change and cancer with increasing urgency, licensing with CC BY allows people to access findings immediately. Last year, we held a webinar on maximizing the value of open access in cultural heritage institutions 🎨🖼️. A common concern for GLAMs (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) thinking about going open is the potential loss of revenue. Still, open collections often attract more viewers, onsite visitors, and financial supporters. A panel of experts explored some of the impacts of open access (financial, commercial, economic) and pointed out how the values and benefits of going open far exceed any potential loss of income. CC Certificate alums have applied their course knowledge in a number of ways to positively impact their community. One such graduate, Revekka Kefalea, participated in the ECHOS II: Traditions in Transition Initiative which took place from September 2020 to June 2022. This European cultural project invited artists from various creative fields to create original artworks inspired by the local traditions of North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece, and Hungary. These artworks were digitized and made available on their website under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license. The site also includes information about local traditions and illustrations sourced from open-access repositories and cultural heritage platforms. What will you do after becoming #CCCertified?
