Abstract
Examines current understanding of the pathogenesis, genetic factors and treatments of obesity. Regulation of energy storage, intake, and expenditure as well as neurophysiology of feeding, and biopsychological factors that impinge on eating behavior are discussed. Metabolic effects of weight perturbation and chemical mediators of energy homeostasis are explored. Drug and surgical therapies as well as behavioral treatments are described. It is argued that behavior modification based on an analysis of the circumstances in which a person tends to eat and the particular meaning of eating for that person can be helpful for weight reduction.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
