Around midnight on July 31 in Pasadena, California, NASA's NEOWISE spacecraft made its final record of the infrared sky. This was the final observation that the prolific telescope would make of our cosmic neighborhood, after nearly 30 million total observations during its lifetime, first as the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and then later as the NEOWISE reactivation, the asteroid-hunting phase of the mission.

Direct imaging and spectroscopy has become a standard tool for studying the atmospheres and orbits of young, self-luminous giant planets in wide orbits. This workshop will cover the scientific questions in exoplanets motivating direct imaging. Sessions will explore basic optical principles of high-contrast imaging and the fundamentals of coronagraph and wavefront sensing technologies and high-contrast instrument design.

NASA's SPHEREx space telescope has been tucked inside a custom-built chamber on and off for the past two months undergoing tests to prepare it for its two-year mission in space. SPHEREx, which stands for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer, is set to launch into orbit around Earth no later than April 2025.
