Wild Cards (2024)
A Fun Show Full of Chemistry
I gave it a chance because the ads looked interesting. I've watched CW shows forever. I've watched every episode of Supernatural. Anyway, it looked like a fun show. I'm glad I watched. I like the premise since it manages to put those two together. The whole cast has great chemistry, not just the leads. The story lines are interesting and often have humor to them. The two leads have great chemistry although I hope they don't have a romance. I'd rather see them as close platonic friends. More like a brother and sister relationship. I wish there were more than 10 episodes for the season. I have to mention, I'm 61 and have watched a decent amount of CW shows since it was the WB. That came out weird, but I think you can make sense of it.
The Amazing Bulk (2012)
Hysterically Ridiculous
I realize most reviewers don't rate this very high, but I have to be an exception. I went into this after reading the trivia here. That helped me to realize what to expect. The crazy, cartoon backgrounds are nuts. The story line isn't original. It's crazy bad, which makes it funny. I laughed my butt off through this entire madhouse of a movie. Granted, I was super stoned. I'm sure that added to my mirth. I'm not going into any details. I recommend reading the trivia for this movie. It made it all the more enjoyable with the knowledge gained there. I'm sure some people may like this while completely sober. I highly recommend if you're stoned or have been drinking.
Running with the Devil (2019)
Bait and Switch
I'm a big Nic Cage fan. I can't help it. I love crazy Cage. That's why I watched this. Nic Cage and Laurence Fishburne in a movie called "Running with the Devil" made me think it would be crazy and fun. It's not crazy nor fun. The stars of the film aren't in it much. That's why I call it bait and switch. It presents itself one way and doesn't deliver that. I expected crazy action. I won't say there wasn't any type of action or irony, but not much. Still, it isn't a bad movie for what it is. If you go in knowing what to expect, more or less, it's probably better without the expectations I had. It's still watchable and does not stink.
Firenado (2023)
What a Stinkfest!
Holy hell! I am so glad I didn't pay to watch this absolute stinkfest. When my husband suggested it I thought it would be along the lines of "Sharknado" and such. It is not. It's crazy bad. Just. Bad. I love a good "so bad it's good and funny" movie. This isn't one. I watched this on Tubi for free. The ads were more entertaining. Some of the acting was okay, but some of it stunk. The so called story is lame. You end up watching the scientists run around while they accomplish nothing. Meanwhile, the other storyline is just as boring. The firenado seems like an after thought since it doesn't do much. We turned it off before it was over. We just didn't care how it ended. The heck with that. That's how bad it is. I rarely turn a movie off (or walk out of a theater.)
Don't waste your time. You have been warned.
Kick-Ass (2010)
A great movie that has it all
When I went to see this movie I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It seemed like it could have been either fun or just a corny satire of some sort. Well....this movie had it all...for me anyway. I was sucked in right from the beginning. I like the idea of regular people wanting to do good and try to be heroic.
I was interested in the characters right away and wanted to see what would happen. Even after getting stabbed and run over by a car, Kick-ass just can't stop wanting to help. When he meets the resident masked heroes, he feels kind of inept. I love Nicholas Cage as Big Daddy. When he's in costume and speaks, he so reminds me of Adam West's delivery in the old Batman show. He's just quirky enough to do his part justice. My favorite of them all is Hit Girl. She's the most fascinating character. Her fight scenes are brilliant. Besides all this, there's some bad guys doing bad things that need to be stopped. There's also a personal vendetta against the big boss by Big Daddy and Hit Girl. I won't spoil anything, but the last fight is a work of beauty.
I'm a fan of comic books, but someone who isn't can enjoy this movie just as much. The story is good and makes enough sense..the action is exciting and the characters are interesting. I absolutely recommend this movie for viewing. Personally, I'd like to see a movie about Hit Girl. Maybe how she became the unstoppable, killing machine that she is. It would be a nice to see Big Daddy raising her. Anyway...go see this movie. It's well worth it.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
More Hype Than Not
I just saw this tonight and I'm positive I won't have any trouble sleeping. I find it hard to believe that there was so many people positively terrified after seeing this movie. It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't scary. There was a certain amount of suspense, I suppose, but I kept watching in hopes that something really frightening would happen. I think the actor and actress who played Micha and Katie were excellent. The characters were well developed. At a certain point, Micha was aggravating the hell out of me. I understood his motives for certain behaviors, but still, there were times I just wanted to smack him. The ending was interesting and not really expected. I just didn't think it was scary. This movie comes off more of a psychological thriller than a horror movie. Too be honest, I can't even remember the last horror movie that really frightened me. Anyway, I don't think I'd recommend the the price of a movie ticket to see this, but it's worth a look when it comes on cable. Maybe it's worth a rental fee. Perhaps I was expecting too much after all the advertisements and (so called?) testimonials to its scariness.
Star Trek (2009)
An Absolutely Great Reboot for Star Trek
I usually sneer at the term "reboot" in terms of movies or TV shows. Usually. This time, however, it truly is a reboot and it is magnificent. I loved this movie. (saw it twice, so far). Whether you're familiar with the old TV show or any of other TV and screen incarnations or someone who's never seen any of the above, you can thoroughly enjoy the characters and plot. It's a bonus if you're familiar with the old TV series since there are some inside jokes and sparingly used more famous quotes. I think it's clever how they use alternate reality because of the change it causes in the time line. If not for Nero's actions, James Kirk wouldn't have lost his father and become such a handful. This movie gives the satisfaction of seeing the crew of the Enterprise come together in different way. The casting is superb. Chris Pine is a great Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock is genius. The way he played Spock as a complicated man. He keeps his logical self out front, but you can see the passion and feelings boiling just beneath the surface. Each and every actor in each and every part were so perfectly cast. This movie has a plot. An actual, honest plot. Each scene fits seamlessly with the next one. The story builds and there's a satisfying ending. Everything comes around full circle and things are as they should be. The crew of the Enterprise are all together and I can't wait to see what adventures are in store. Surely there will be sequels. There's just so much to love about this movie. The excellent screenplay that provides interesting dialogues.....The wonderful casting and acting involved. There was enough excitement and battles to be satisfied without being overwhelmed by endless explosions. Leonard Nimoy's pivotal part was very good. I loved seeing him as the older Spock. I absolutely recommend this movie. It's very enjoyable and fun, too. Even if you swear you don't like Sci Fi stuff, watch it...I think you'll enjoy it.
The Dark Knight (2008)
It's not really that great of a movie
I'm so relieved that I'm not the only one who doesn't think this movie is great. I saw this first in the theater, and to be honest, probably would've given it a bit higher rating...if I would've reviewed it then. But........I just watched it again on cable and it doesn't hold up as well outside of the movie theater with it's huge screen, dark room and loud speakers. First off...what I liked. Heath Leadger was fantastic as the Joker and could've done so much more with it if the writing and plot had been better. The movie should've focused on a battle of wits and balls between Batman and Joker. That would've been more interesting. I liked Morgan Freeman. I enjoy his character. I like that there wasn't some big distracting relationship for Batman/Bruce. I even enjoyed some of the explosions. I hate Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce. He just doesn't emote anything. Also...HE HAS THE WORST BATMAN VOICE EVER....EVER....EVER!!!! The movie was way too long and had way too many subplots going. I could've lived without the whole Harvey Dent thing. Why introduce Two Face just to kill him off? It made no sense. Then again, a lot of the subplots made no sense. The movie takes itself too seriously. There's really no humor either. I realize the whole idea was to make it dark, but sheesh, c'mon. There were too many just shoved in there explosions going on. It felt like two movies being rammed into one. It's just too much. Too many things going on that don't really gel together. I guess I'm tired of movies that offer more in explosions and chases than solid story telling and characters you can give a damn about. I honestly could not sit through this movie again. If I do anything, I'll watch it free on demand and fast forward to the Heath Leadger scenes. He did so much with what he was given to work with.....which wasn't any where near what it could have been. All in all...this movie doesn't live up to the hype.
P2 (2007)
A solid psychological thriller
I just watched this and enjoyed it very much. It's set on Christmas Eve and takes place almost entirely in the underground parking garage. 95% of this movie is entirely centered around only two characters and it works!! I enjoyed these characters. Thomas is so crazy creepy. I found him to be quite scary. It's frightening because there's really people out there like this. Angela was great. She's no stupid, helpless airhead. She's smart and has has excellent survival instincts. As terrified as she is, Angela fights to get away and stay alive. She takes time to think and not just react. The exchanges between Angela and Thomas are unsettling. I wouldn't call this movie a horror movie. I think it's more of a suspenseful thriller. It's a solid movie. There's good action, good dialogue and really good acting. I don't think this movie got the attention it deserves. If you get a chance to watch this, I'd recommend taking the chance. It's not too bloody. I found the ending to be ever so satisfying. Give P2 a chance.
You Better Watch Out (1980)
This is not a horror/slasher movie
I know this movie was marketed as a slasher/horror flick, but it's not and if you go into it expecting that, you'll be disappointed. I saw this under the title "Christmas Evil". It is the psychological study of a man losing his mind. You are literally watching him go insane. I was a little bored at the very beginning and almost considered turning it off, but then I was drawn into the story. Harry, as a young child, saw his mother making out with Santa (obviously his dad)and this apparently scars him. I know, that may sound sort of lame, but if something like that really does start a whole psychological problem, well...there's something else wrong with that person. Harry becomes obsessed with Christmas. He keeps tabs on the neighborhood kids and has naughty and nice books. All this just shows you how screwed up this guy is already. His mental decline is interesting, scary and sad. Harry's not really an evil man. He's just going crazy. I felt sorry for him. I found it unsettling to watch him lose his mind. It all comes to a head on Christmas Eve. He makes a kick ass Santa suit and glues a beard to his face. His van is painted with a lovely Christmas sleigh. He swings between kind and killer. He never kills a child...only some adults...and not very many at that. The kills are interesting, but not the point of the movie. It's all about Harry's descent into madness. I know there's a lot of people writing that Santa's van magically flies away at the end...well..I don't think that was intended to be taken literally. It's what poor crazy Harry is seeing in his delusional head. In real life, the van hit the bottom of a very long fall and Santa, no doubt, was dead. Do they actually have to show the van crashing to get that idea across? Anyway....I thought this was really good. I knew what to expect though. I read some "non spoiler" reviews on this site before I watched it. So...I'd recommend this movie for those who enjoy psychological studies or can simply leave themselves open to the experience.
Tremors (1990)
One of my absolute favorites!
This is a terrific movie. I've seen it so many times that I should just buy the DVD. It's the best action/suspense/comedy I've seen. A small isolated town is besieged by giant underground worm like creatures. It doesn't matter where they came from. Sometimes you just never know the answers. That's how it is in life. Anyway, the best part of it is the dialogue. The exchanges are witty and funny. I laugh a whole lot while watching this movie. The characters are great and the way they interact is so damned enjoyable. There's not just humor though. There's tons of action and thrills without a lot of gore. It's an exciting and totally enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this movie. You'll be glad you watched it.
Ghoulies II (1987)
Harmless, sorta gory pass time
I just can't hate this movie. Seriously. It's a stupid, fun movie that's perfect for that moment when you're kinda bored and maybe a little stoned and have time to kill. It's a sequel to a not so great movie. The Ghoulies are back and in a carnival fun house. I was amused by the way other people thought the ghoulies were part of the attraction while witnessing actual killing and death. It does sort of show how society can become desensitized to violence. Kind of a lofty thought for this type of movie. The plot is rather simple and kind of lame, but still loads of fun IF you watch it in the right frame of mind. You have to know what to expect. This isn't an award winning movie, folks. You shouldn't really expect more than the movie offers. It is lots of fun and has some interesting deaths in it. I laughed at several parts. I especially liked the way it ended. I found it funny as hell. I wouldn't pay to see it, but if you can catch it on cable, give it a try.
Squirm (1976)
It kind of sucked, but made me laugh
I watched this one on Demand and was ever so grateful it was free. I had vague memories of the movie poster from 1976. I was curious. I knew from the premise that it wasn't going to be award winning. A huge electrical storm hits the southern town of Fly Creek and huge power lines are knocked down and go buzzing into the ground. This bothers the nasty worms that bite and they come above ground. Of course, havoc ensues. Yeah, right. I found the entire cast of characters annoying. Oh, and weird. I suppose Mick, from New York, is the least annoying one. Mick's gone to Fly Creek to visit his girlfriend, Geri. Her sister, Alma was comical to me as she teetered about in these bright red, towering platform shoes. Her outfit cracked me up too. Many of the people in this town are less than attractive and very strange. I found the towns people scarier than the worms could ever be.
Yes, the worms. Apparently, electricity causes the worms to scream as we're treated to close ups of the worms mouths opening and closing. Gross. I think you don't really see much of anything, besides a skeleton or two, for the first two thirds of the movie. When the worms made their appearance, it was some of the funniest stuff, albeit kinda disgusting. The worm "attacks" mostly consisted of worms dropping down from above onto the unsuspecting victim. They also like to fall out of things and engulf their victims. There's a scene with a closet that's just gross, but lots of fun. I swear there were instances where the worms were dropping from a ceiling, but how could they get all the way up to the second floor and make their way through the floor/ceiling? Of course, this sort of thing makes me laugh all the more.
I thought the dialogue sucked and the acting isn't so great. It is, however, quite campy and (unintentionally?)funny at times. I sat there thinking, "Man, this sucks.", but I kept on watching it. I had fun with it, but that doesn't mean it was good. I think I would've enjoyed it more if no one survived at the end. Like I said, it's not really a good movie, but if you're bored and curious, you just might want to check it out. Just make sure it's free.
Black Sheep (2006)
Loads of Fun
This is an absolutely fun movie. To enjoy this you have to take the movie at face value. It's a horror movie, sure, but it's so damned funny. With a plot involving genetically engineered, killer sheep, what else would one expect? It's an entertaining New Zealand production and well put together. The story begins by showing the brothers when they were children with their father. They help Dad run the family sheep ranch. The older brother seems to have some serious problems and manages to traumatize the younger one on the day their father dies in an accident. It fast forwards to the brothers all grown up. The younger is messed up and has a huge fear of sheep. Seems he's been away from the ranch since his father's death. The older brother's been using his time running the ranch and tinkering with sheep genetics. All hell breaks loose when two radical animal rights members go on the ranch and unknowingly release the horror. The horror would be killer, flesh eating sheep. I laughed so hard during the sheep attack scenes. They are totally priceless. Seriously. The actors are great and the script is good. I really enjoyed it. It's a fun ride. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves offbeat movies.
The Midnight Meat Train (2008)
An entertaining pre Halloween movie
I've been dying to watch some new(to me anyway) horror flicks since Halloween's just around the corner, when I stumbled onto this movie. I enjoyed it. There was a satisfactory amount of tension and creepiness with a nice dollop of gore. It was a little slow in places, but the movie made up for it with some really good scenes. I found the photographer character interesting. The killer was very creepy with his dead eyed stare. This movie reminds me of the classic slasher movies. The gore isn't overwhelming, although I did say.."Oh gross!!" a few times. Even though I was suspecting the twist at the end, it was still satisfying for me. If you enjoy horror movies, you may want to give this a try.
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
One of my favorite horror movies
I completely love this movie! I've seen it a bunch of times. The acting was quite good and the story was excellent. I think it's a cut above the usual horror fare. I found it to be tense and suspenseful. There was loads of action and it totally kept my attention. I know some people commenting are turned of by what they consider stupid moves by the characters. Oh come on. It's a horror movie. What kind of movie would you have if everything happened in a logical and expedient manner? Why must the characters do certain things?! Because it's a horror movie and you have to do stuff to keep it going. Anyway, I'd highly recommend this movie. I particularly love the ending. I think it's great. Someday I'm just gonna break down and buy the DVD. That's how much I like it.
Across the Universe (2007)
Bloody awful
I found this movie very underwhelming. I just couldn't like it. I just watched it on DVD with my 21 year old daughter and we both just sat there like...what the hell? It seemed promising at the very beginning, but it just didn't go anywhere. It's like someone took a bunch of Beatles song titles, threw them in a hat and then randomly picked a bunch out. Then they sat and said to themselves, " Okay, let's try to make some kinda story to stick in between these songs." Sure, the visuals are stunning. But that's it. The so called plot is paper thin and there's no continuity to it really. And the character! None of them were developed in any way, shape or form. They were one dimensional and I couldn't care one little bit about any of them. The character of Prudence was completely unneeded. She added nothing to the pitiful story. Why was she even there? She disappears without explanation for a while and them just sorta shows up again. It was weird. I did enjoy some of the songs. A few were decent versions. Other songs, however, were just awful. So many of them were slowed down so much it was painful to sit through. I couldn't even be impressed with the dancing, which for the most part, I found awful. This movie seemed to take forever to be over. I'm not even sure why we continued to watch it. Perhaps it was a morbid curiosity to see how the heck the damned thing was going to finally end.
I was surprised when I came on this site to see what others thought of Across the Universe. I'd been thinking...surely it's not just me and my daughter who didn't like it. Her friend raved about how great it was when he gave us the DVD to watch. So many people on here loved it. I kept reading and found the ones, who like me, didn't like it. For the most part, it seems that people either loved it or hated it. The ones who were in between seemed to enjoy the music, visuals and dance, but were unimpressed with plot and characters. For me, the visuals weren't enough to make this a good movie. I can't possibly recommend it.
Choke (2001)
Freaky but enjoyable
I just saw this movie on late night television and really liked it. I wanted to find out more about this thriller and ended up here. The only reason I started watching it was because Dennis Hopper was in it, but was quickly drawn into it. I realize, from the comments I've read, that lots of people didn't think it was very good, and that surprised me. I liked the plot and enjoyed the acting of Dennis Hopper and Michael Madsen. I found it quite interesting how they were filmed while riding in the car talking. It gave a surreal and rather paranoid feel to the scenes. Sure, not all of the supporting cast are overwhelmingly wonderful when it comes to acting, but they're not on screen enough to really be a bother. I adored the ending. All I'll say is; it's a nice bit of a twist. I thought it was quite clever. I truly don't understand why so many people dislike this movie. I recommend it. It certainly kept my interest.
