The Garfield Movie (2024)
A Guilty 2024 Pleasure
This is probably going to end up being a guilty pleasure for me. Now, this isn't the best movie, nowhere close to my top 10 of the year. However, I thought it was a sweet movie. It gave me a smile. Yes, some of the humor is unfunny, a lot of times it can fall flat on its face, but I still had a good time. Again, I thought it was a sweet film! I love a good father-son story. Now they do have some things to fix, but if they could learn from their mistakes, I'd be down to see a sequel. What probably made me the happiest is that it reminded me of the Garfield cartoon I would watch when I was younger. So, it definitely had nostalgia in there for me.
I Saw the TV Glow (2024)
WAY to Artsy
WAY too artsy for my liking. I couldn't tell you one thing about the actual story this movie has. It was such a weird movie, it's also one that isn't necessarily my cup of tea. I was also never really scared for it being a horror movie. I was just weirded out. From what I took away from this movie was that it had little to no story structure. Again, I took nothing away from this movie! This may be something a lot of people like, and there's certainly an audience out there for it, but I absolutely hated this movie. It will 100% be in my bottom 10 of the year. This is the movie that a lot of people like from this year, and I don't feel the same way whatsoever. I get subjectiveness, but I don't know how people like this.
Transformers One (2024)
The Transformers Movie Fans Have Been Waiting For
This is 100% the best Transformers movie. It's definitely one of the best of the year as well. For rather simplistic trailers, this movie goes into more of a complexity that is inspiring, and even heartbreaking at times. The bond between Orion and D was sweet, and seeing it fall apart had me on the edge of my seat. My favorite part about the movie has to be that it is a definitive Transformers movie. It's been the Transformers movie fans have been waiting for a long time. It was such a cool experience finally seeing the Transformers lore unfold on the big screen. I'm also quite surprised how funny this franchise can be. Bumblebee, I mean Badassatron, is definitely the best part. I can't wait to see the future of this franchise, and how our two leads unfold into their different characters and to see more of their backgrounds.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)
A Slept on Transformers Movie
I think that this is a slept on movie. No it doesn't have that Michael Bay style, but I'd rather have a better story, than better action. I still think that all the Transformers look great, and I loved the inclusion of the Maximals. Optimus Primal will forever be a favorite of mine. I don't think the action is as good as Michael Bay's, I still thought that final battle was awesome! Something that was a good trade off for that Bay style, was the characters. I found the human characters to be more enjoyable and compelling. Yes, it's not 100% a Transformers movie, but this was a certainly in that direction. I can't wait to see the future of this franchise.
Bumblebee (2018)
Better Transformers Movie and a Better Human Story
This has to be the best Transformers movie! I remember the day I saw this in the theater, and this might just be my E. T. This movie just shows how great it is just going back to formula. It doesn't only have a great human story, but it has a great Transformers story. And a Transformers story is all I ask for in a Transformers movie. I will forever love that opening sequence on Cybertron. Every single Transformer looks beautiful. This isn't just the best Transformers movie, but it's also the best looking one. I just thought this movie was beautiful from start to finish, and this will be a movie I hold close to my heart. I honestly think they should've made a sequel to Bumblebee, instead of going straight to a random Transformers movie. This could've been the start to a great ramp up, but I think Hasbro might've dropped the bag on that one.
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
Who Knew Michael Bay Could be so Boring?
Yikes! I love the Transformers franchise, but this was just weird. I mean who knew a Michael Bay Transformers movie would be so boring. It's gotten to the point where the action just starts to get played out. I found myself rolling my eyes more times than I should've. I could already see this sort of stuff sliding through the cracks in Age of Extinction, but it makes a land slide in this one. Michael Bay was starting to do weird things with Optimus Prime, and it's at the point where I'm questioning whether or not he understood Optimus in the first place. Optimus Prime isn't an evil character! I will give credit where credit is due, which is that moment between Bee and Prime. I thought that scene between them was beautiful, but is sadly rushed.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
A Guilty Pleasure of a Transformers Movie
This movie was actually kind of better than I remembered. No it's not necessarily the best story, but that's because they didn't execute it the best to its ability. I mean you had a lot of cool plot lines and threads. I loved the idea of a more grizzled, down on his luck Prime. I thought stuff they introduced with Optimus at the beginning I thought was really cool, it reminded me of Logan. But to have him copy a regular truck and he's brand new again made me a little frustrated. However, I still think this movie had some awesome moments. It didn't necessarily progress the story that well, but I still had a good time watching.
A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)
Not as Scary, but Surprisingly Heartfelt
I was quite surprised by this movie. It wasn't exactly what I was thinking it was going to be, but I think it turned out great. They crank the horror and the suspense down a bit, and that's going to bring the film down for a lot of people. It definitely did for me. What made this movie so good was the heartfelt story. This movie does some amazing character work, and I really hope I can see them in the future of A Quiet Place. We got some masterful performances from Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn. I just fell in love with these characters, and it made me fall in love with the story. Man, I could really go for a piece of pizza right now.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
An Emotional, Action Packed Conclusion
Michael Bay is able to take his two previous Transformers movies, and put the best parts into one with Dark of the Moon. The action is still spectacular, and it's been a real standout in this trilogy. This movie then takes it a step up when they add some of that emotion. The character work in this movie was absolutely awesome, and I was hooked for just about the whole thing. Two of my favorite characters from the Bay movies had to have been Sam's parents. I thought they were hilarious in all three movies. I will be missing them very much, in fact I'll be missing all of the human characters very much. I never realized it when watching the previous two, but they were able to plant the seeds, that grew into the emotional conclusion. This movie had some spectacular moments, specifically between Sam and Bumblebee. The action is amazing, the characters are amazing, there's betrayal, there's depth. This has to be my favorite out of the Bay films.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Transformers are funny?
I can't believe how funny Michael Bay can be! This isn't the best movie, but it does the same great things that the first one did. It's funny, and there's even more action! The reason why I think it's not as good is because, they trade even better action, with weaker storytelling. They did have some great moments! Those scenes with Optimus Prime or even Sam Witwicky were gold! I even appreciate the film for having that Transformers action sooner in the film. Once again, Michael Bay is a gifted visual artist. This just isn't necessarily a good Transformers story, it a good human story. For a movie called Transformers, I'm going to be hoping for a better Transformers story. I would think it would be better if they had a stronger human story, and the stuff for that is certainly there.
Beetlejuice (1988)
Fun, But Not the Cult Classic For Me
Now this isn't the amazing cult classic that everyone says it is, but I definitely had some fun with this movie. I was never found a connection with these characters, but the cast sure made me smile. I thought that Beatlejuice was fun, I was even a bit surprised by him. First off I didn't realize he only has 15 minutes of screen time, and I thought he was crazy for a PG movie. It's the fact that this movie is PG and he can still get away with some of the stuff he does and say in this film. It's not the best story/plot wise. However, I watched this film was quite the smile on my face. I thought Michael Keaton put on a great performance.
The Watchers (2024)
Shows Potential
I honestly don't know what to think. I will say this. I think Ishana Night Shyamalan has potential as a director. I would say this was good for her directorial debut. I was intrigued by "The Watchers" for the most part. I however wasn't all that interested in the characters, except for our lead. I even thought that the folklore was a pretty cool feature in the story. I mentioned how I was intrigued by "The Watchers" for the most part. I thought they were scary and whenever they appeared I was just a little bit anxious. That's actually one of the problems of the film. It doesn't do anything to stick out. It was a little bit this a little bit that. What really lowers this film for me is the third act. They start over explaining "The Watchers" and it got to the point to where they became a bit uninteresting. Again, I think Ishana Night Shyamalan has a lot of potential as a director, and I think she can really pick up after her dad a bit.
Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Two (2024)
Messy, Unstructured Mess
I think I should've left it at the first one. Now I'm in too deep, and I'm more than likely going to watch the third one. This movie is just a mess. Even messier than the first. The first one had almost no writing structure, and this second one has no structure whatsoever. We're expected to connect with these characters, but they're literally just there. They're just stale characters, due to their stale writing. They have something really cool, they just make it uninteresting. It's just a giant piece of straight to video crap. I hate saying that! I'm sure a good amount of hard work went into this, and they achieved something that I never could. Again, the pieces are there for something cool, they just somehow made it uninteresting.
Transformers (2007)
What an Amazing Blockbuster
I haven't watched this one in ages, and I forgot how great this was! This is what a blockbuster should be! It has amazing action, great characters, a surprising amount of humor, and a bit of heart. Michael Bay is just one of those directors, with a gift for visual storytelling. He can create some amazing action shots and sequences. I had such a fun time whenever the Transformers was in battle. That leads me into my biggest complaint. This is more of a human story than a Transformers movie. Don't get me wrong, I think the human characters were great. It's just that the Transformers action doesn't really start until an hour into the film. However, everything after that makes up for the wait. It truly is awesome.
The Union (2024)
Just a Basic and Generic Netflix Action Movie
I don't know why I even bother with these types of movies. This is just your basic action Netflix movie that you're just going to forget about in less than a week. It had poor writing structure, a lack luster script, and basic and generic action. The one thing that made this movie better than some others are the characters. Not necessarily the characters themselves, but the actors that play them. I love every actor, like Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry. I probably love J. K. Simons the most. I just hated how they treated him as a character. For such a pivotal character, he was barely in there! There was a twist in the movie that made me more confused than surprised. They drop the twist, and we don't touch upon that much later in the film.
Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One (2024)
Boring Visual Noise
Yikes! I love DC and there was some stuff that I could've loved in this movie. However, none of it is used correctly. Stiff dialogue, ok animation, and a terrible story structure. It felt like we were missing crucial exposition! This movie has no proper structure whatsoever. I think the worst part is that they established the characters poorly. We were going all over the place with different Barrys on different Earths. It was to the point to where I was just confused what was happening, when it was happening, and where it was happening. For such a high stakes movie, it felt like a nothing burger. You can even say it was just visual noise. And it was very boring visual noise. I have no clue where they're going with these next two movies. I didn't know what the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline is, and I still don't know.
La La Land (2016)
I've Never Felt So Good Being Teared Apart
I don't know how I didn't watch this any sooner. La La Land is and always will be spectacular! They took the time establishing our two leads and where they are at. Once we've made that connection with them they take the time to establish the relationship. That was beautiful on its own. We then get half way through the movie and that's when it plays with my heart. The heart strings were pulled quite a lot. They just kept pulling me to shreds! I've never felt so good being mentally ruined. Of course, I've got to talk about the musical factor. Some were fun, and some were just jaw dropping moments. That one reoccurring musical theme throughout was beautiful. So, many beautiful full circle moments. That theme is going to be stuck in my head for a long time.
Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie (2024)
I love SpongeBob, but I Don't Like This Movie
I don't know if it's that I'm growing out of the franchise or what, but this was really bad. Don't get me wrong. I loved watching SpongeBob growing up and it had a special place in my heart. I'm hoping it's just a a Netflix issue, but again, this sucked. If you're going in here expecting the classic SpongeBob shenanigans you're going to get that. It's the human stuff that sucked. It was cheap, low quality, poorly written, and even cringe inducing. For a SpongeBob movie, you need to focus on your main characters. I did however like the Cheeks family. The writing just wasn't good. I just don't think SpongeBob and humans mix well. It just seems like the SpongeBob franchise is one that is hard to translate from short TV episodes to full length movies.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
The Absolute Pinnacle of Cinematic Achievement
Infinity War went to show the amazing cinematic achievement that the MCU has reached. Avengers: Endgame is the pinnacle of that. I'm usually not one for three-hour movies, but this one is a blast. It was and always will be a blast of a film. If I need a longer escape, Avengers: Endgame is there. I could watch the final hour any day during the week! It was just such an epic movie!
What was great about Infinity War was that it took all these different plot lines and put them together into just two beautifully. Avengers: Endgame is a different case. They took this big giant group, and then split them into three. Then they all came together at the end. The moment they all come together in the portals, has to be one of the most iconic scenes in movie history.
So, with them splitting into some beautifully crafted plot lines, they then go on to close them. Absolutely beautiful! From the first time I watched this to now, I tear up at those different closers. All of these characters' performances were spectacular! From Thanos, to Hulk, to Hawkeye, to Black Widow, to Rocket, to Thor, to Captain America, then Iron Man.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
An Absolutely Beautiful Cinematic Achievement
I am HYPED for the Russo Brothers' return! This movie isn't just a beautiful entry of the MCU, it goes to show the amazing cinematic achievement that the MCU has made. There's no doubt that there is a lot of plot lines. Usually, a movie that has this many plot lines would be messy. They just had amazing build up to it, that I was already connected to the characters. So, each plot line was great! It's when they start merging them into one. It goes from all of these plot lines and sub plots, to just two. One with the Guardians, Iron Man, Strange, and Spider-Man. And everyone at Wakanda.
Thanos is definitely one of my all-time favorite villains. He just had such a presence on screen. Josh Brolin was amazing in the role. From the opening of the film to the end. This was a movie with huge stakes, and they were able to pay it off. It isn't exactly a good thing. That just goes to show how great of a standalone story this can be.
Hulk (2003)
The Definition of Mediocre
I have been going back and forth on this for a while. I definitely think that the third act is the best part. I got a lot of my enjoyment from the third act. When we get the Hulk, they simply deliver the Hulk. It's the fun action and fights that you would expect from a Hulk movie. However, I think we could've gotten more of that Hulk action. I also ended up enjoying the characters more in the third act. You see Bruce deal with more of his trauma as he remembers more and more. There're some good scenes with him and his dad. However, there is a lot that's weighing the movie down. I was just simply never interested in the story. They establish it at the opening of the film, but it takes a while for them to pick that plot line up again. So, for the first two acts, I was never interested in the story, or the characters. The run time certainly didn't help with that either. I think this movie could've been a bit shorter. I think that it is safe to say that this movie is the definition of mediocre.
Twisters (2024)
Entertaining and Heartfelt
IF YOU FEEL IT! CHASE IT! I thought this movie was awesome! It is certainly carried by our two charismatic stars, Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones. I was completely charmed by the two, and they are what elevated the story. I didn't only care for them, but I cared for all the other characters around them. Overall, their chemistry was great! Moving on to the tornadoes, those were awesome as well. The different scenes we got with the tornadoes from the beginning all the way to the end was intense and thrilling. I was even a bit scared at times too. So, to recap my experience, I was charmed all the way through, and there was moments that I was on the edge of my seat fearing the worst for these characters. You don't face your fears. You ride them.
Bob Marley: One Love (2024)
Messy and Boring
I just did not care for this movie. It just had too many different threads that we were expected to connect ourselves. I don't know anything about Bob Marley, so I wasn't able to fill in these holes. It got to the point to where I just wasn't interested in the story, and I was bored all throughout. I will saw this. It is carried by the performances of these actors. Specifically Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley himself. He was the only reason why I was interested in the characters in the first place. This sadly just falls under the generic pile of musical biopic films. It might be one of the worst out of that pile.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Convoluted but Funny and Very Entertaining
This movie was a lot of fun! It delivers on some of the classic Ghostbusters action, and I was definitely entertained. I thought this movie had a bunch of funny moments, some that even made me laugh out loud. All of these characters were great. I loved the legacy characters, the returning Afterlife characters, and the new ones introduced in this film. I thought Kumail Nanjiani and Paul Rudd were hilarious. So, yes. This film delivers on the classic charm and charismatic characters you would expect from Ghostbusters. However, the different plot threads made this movie a bit too convoluted. It's to the point to where I started to lose some care about the story. They set up these different plot lines that they do get to, they just don't interweave all that well. So, overall. Great characters, weak story.
The New Mutants (2020)
Failed at Answering the Basic Writing Structure
What just happened? I'm serious! I think this movie failed at the basic structure of writing. I was asking who, what, when, where, and why for the whole entire film. So, really the part that they screw up in is the basic writing structure. There was barely a plot, no rising action, no climax, and even no resolution. I guess the action was ok. That's just being kind. On top of the writing and action being forgettable, I found the characters to be forgettable. The cast just feels like wasted potential. Now, I can only speak on Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Heaton, but I'm sure the rest are great. The acting was never really the problem. It all just came down to the writing.
