The Machine (2023)
Why did I watch this
Bert Kreischer making a movie is maybe the last thing he should have done. Number one on his list should be to either keep his shirt on or lose weight.
The only funny thing about this movie surrounding the only joke Bert has ever told, is how much the movie bombed. Anyone in the Roganverse trying to do anything outside of the Roganverse always fails. When will these "comics" learn? Your fame and money is much more than the actual comedic skill you possess. Without Joe Rogan, they'd all be complete failures. Go check anything outside of podcasting these dummies do and you'll see failures... failures everywhere!
Hang it up Bert. Your shtick has long been dead. Stick to your stupid podcasts. What do you have now, 3 of them? Not enough! You need 5, 6, 7 podcasts!
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson (2019)
I don't get it.
I gave this a proper watch and I simply don't understand this show or its humor.
The skits are all situations that would never happen in daily life, even a little bit. Tim Robinson is over the top, seemingly on purpose, but it doesn't do a great job at landing. I'm left genuinely wondering what the point of these skits are. It's certainly not satire, not parody, so what is it? The amount of non-sequiters reminds me of old humor that came from Vine and all the cringey young kids that would produce it. It's a lot of forced awkwardness and raunchy loudness in an attempt to be funny.
I don't know-not for me. I'm confused how people find it funny when something like South Park exists which is actually funny, has story structure, and has a purpose. To each their own I suppose.
Disenchantment (2018)
Watchable, but not memorable
This series had potential to be unique, and I think in some ways it still maintains that, but overall it doesn't do well in capturing your attention. I do think it has a few redeeming qualities that would make it worthwhile to some viewers.
The show's characters aren't interesting or distinctive, which is what I believe this series misses most.
The episodes tend to have very little conflict. The stakes are typically low as well which make for boring television. Often, the main trio (Bean, Elfo, and Luci) get into something trivial, it resolved, then they're back to square one and ready to repeat it in the next episode. It's all predictable. Each episode started to blend together at about episode 6 in Season 1. I soon realized I was having trouble with episode plots and what the characters were truly doing.
As for comedy purposes, it doesn't garner laughs from me--the comedy it tries to produce isn't particularly funny.
There is some sort of charm the show possesses though. I can't quote put my finger on it exactly, but it makes for a decent show to have on in the background.
I don't think the writers are passionate about the show, unfortunately. It certainly shows in the episodes.
All in all, it's watchable enough.
Mulligan (2023)
Needs more 1 star reviews
This show is one of the worst animated shows I've ever attempted to watch. There's not much else I can say. Once they did the stupid "Okurrr" in episode 1 to reference the terrible rapper Cardi B, I was out. Totally unfunny, try-hard, terrible writing, terrible concept (stupid guy becomes president.)
How in the world do shows like this keep getting greenlit? Netflix, please let me create animated comedy. You're working with the wrong people. Whoever made Mulligan should be banned from Hollywood. And honestly, whoever said "yeah we should give this show a try" should also be fired and banned!!
Inside Job (2021)
It just doesn't have it.
The best way to describe this show is "meh." The writing isn't so bad-somewhat watchable. But the jokes are very tryhard. The forced cussing is a bit much to handle as well. I'm all for cussing, but it comes off unnatural, as if they think cussing a ton is going to get laughs. I imagine teenagers would write this type of dialogue. It's new age humor I would say. I really hate the type of hip slang it tries to constantly use (if you've ever been on Twitter than you'll have seen what I'm talking about.) I'm 29, so I'm not quite a crabby old man yet, and I still hate it.
The characters don't really stand out. There's nothing about any of these characters that get me to connect with them or want to root for them (or root against them.) There's nothing dynamic about them.
The animation looks like everything else out right now for some reason. Everything is starting to look like Rick & Morty, or whatever show Rick & Morty was styled after.
Overall, I don't think it's an awful show, but it's not something I'd want to continue watching. The writing in terms of plot aren't bad, but other than that this show has nothing special. It's just kind of stupid and boring.
Fired on Mars (2023)
Awful (UPDATE: actually not so awful)
This show is terrible. The writing is so bad. This happens, then this happens, then this happens. That's called bad writing.
The comedy is try-hard and tries to achieve it by overusing cuss words. Cue Pete Davidson (why was he casted? He can't voice act whatsoever.)
I watched 2 episodes. Insanely boring show. Super slow moving. How do animated shows like this keep getting greenlit? No joke, a 12 year old could write a better adult animated show.
Hey HBOMax, please go find some actual creative people to make animated shows. I have no clue how people are giving this show a good rating. They must have low standards and awful humor.
UPDATE: I don't know why, but I decided to watch all the episodes. I'm updating my rating to a 6/10. Could argue for a 7/10. It got better the more I watched, then I found myself actually wanting to watch the next episode. I judge too hastily. I think it's worth watching. I believe it's a unique show, although it does have its flaws. Not sure the point of having big names voice characters (Luke Wilson & Pete Davidson). I can't stand big names like that in animation, because then you just have characters who sound like Luke Wilson & Pete Davidson. It's like Beyoncé voicing a lion. It's distracting because these people don't have any sort of range (South Park is the best example of voices that have different range). Anyway, I'd watch Season 2 of this. I don't think it's supposed to be funny. More so a drama, so viewers should treat it as such.
Cunk on Earth (2022)
Incredibly dull and forced
This type of show has been created time and time again. Interviewing professors and other intellectuals by wasting their time with ridiculous try-hard questions has been done (and much better by The Daily Show). Not sure why this is on Netflix. It feels like someone on YouTube could've made this very easily. The current 8.1 IMDb rating is honestly shocking to me.
You can feel the lame jokes coming from a mile away. Shows like this make me continue to appreciate South Park more and more, because as more crappy shows like Cunk On Earth get created, I know I can just go right back to rewatching South Park and have my faith restored again in comedy.
Rick and Morty (2013)
Pretty good
I give it a 7/10. It's not amazing, but the stories are decent, jokes are decent, characters are decent. It doesn't compare to South Park (although nothing does.) I give it the #2 spot in adult animation as of the past handful of years. It's watchable and at times enjoyable. Season 4 and 5 sucked though.
