Disney is set to take a $1.5 billion write-down during the fiscal third quarter after the entertainment giant removed more than 30 shows off of Disney+ and Hulu last month in an effort to bring down costs, according to a Friday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
On May 26, Disney pulled shows like The World According to Jeff Goldblum, Y: The Last Man, The Mighty Ducks, Turner & Hooch, Willow, Maggie, Dollface and the 2022 Cheaper By the Dozen off of its streaming services. During the company’s May earnings call, Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said the company expected to take on upwards of $1.8 billion in impairment charges as a result of removing the content.
Friday’s SEC filing said Disney is “continuing its review” and is expecting to remove additional produced content from its streaming services during the third quarter, with those removals expected to incur an additional $400 million write-down.

“The Afterparty” executive producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord remain committed to mixed media presentations. Sure, there’s the multi-genre format of their murder mystery series, but their ambitions are perhaps even better explained by Season 1 star Ben Schwartz’s unorthodox appearance at the show’s Emmy FYC event at Hollywood Legion on Saturday.
Dialing in via FaceTime on an iPad perched on Miller’s lap, Schwartz shouted to the audience, “We’re all having fun, aren’t we?”
“The Afterparty” takes place after a high school reunion, as pop star alum Xavier (Dave Franco) invites his former classmates to party at his mansion. When Xavier falls to his death off of the balcony, Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) shows up to investigate who pushed him and each of the alumni is a suspect. Despite minor strides towards LGBTQ representation in big budget studio movies (a recent study from GLAAD’s annual Studio Responsibility Index noted that there was an increase in the percentage of films with Lbgtq characters in 2020), recent events prove just how empty those gestures are on a day-to-day basis. Over the last few weeks, one of Hollywood’s biggest money-makers — The Walt Disney Company and its many related entities — has had to face backlash from angry shareholders, employees, and fans over its inaction in regards to Florida’s planned “Don’t Say Gay” bill; walkouts by LGBTQ employees and allies in protest of said draconian bill; and the publication of a letter from Pixar employees that revealed that the studio already has its own “Don’t Say Gay” policy behind closed doors.

The third incarnation of the venerable story of a blended family of twelve, Cheaper by the Dozen, starring Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union as the heads of house, plays out as predictably as one might expect heading into it, but there is an earnestness to the family dynamic at work that makes the whole business worthwhile once all is said and done.
Adapted from the novel by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, the film tells the tale of a family, the Bakers, as they navigate the waters of their now wildly frenetic life as they try to keep their family business – an all-day breakfast restaurant – running smoothly.
Of course, this is easier said than done as there are numerous obstacles to the family’s enduring happiness, the grandest of which is a move to a sleek, gated community that portends a higher station in life for the...

Gabrielle Union has some choice words for Disney over the company's handling of Florida's controversial "Don't Say Gay" bill. The bill, which limits what classrooms are allowed to teach about sexual orientation and gender identity, was passed on March 8. Disney initially refused to publicly condemn it, earning backlash from its own employees and some celebrities. On March 16, Union criticized Disney for its response to the bill while attending the "Cheaper by the Dozen" premiere.
"Somebody asked me, 'Are you disappointed?' I'm disappointed when my order isn't right at In-n-Out. I don't even think that's a word that you could use for something like this, where children's lives are literally hanging in the balance," Union told Variety. "We need to own that if you truly are taking stands against hate and oppression, you should not fund hate and oppression. Period. The damage is done."

Families are like branches on a tree. They grow in different directions, yet their trunk and roots keep them together as one. But for Paul and Zoey Baker in Gail Lerner's new remake of "Cheaper By The Dozen," their family tree might as well be a small forest. On top of that, there's an ex-wife and an ex-husband who do their best to stay as involved as possible as well. "Disappointed" doesn't even come close to how Gabrielle Union feels about Disney's public stance on Florida's controversial legislation that critics have dubbed the "Don't Say Gay" bill. The movie is by Disney, whose CEO recently condemned the Florida bill and announced his company has paused political donations in the state following backlash over the group's previous lack of public stance on the matter and its past contributions to lawmakers who have supported the legislation. What began as an autobiographical lark for a brother and sister scribbling down stories about growing up in a radical family of an unconventional size has turned into the basis for Hollywood’s decades-long obsession with their familial farces. The portrait of charming, controlled chaos within Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey’s novel “Cheaper by the Dozen” has been adapted for the screen twice before, produced during two drastically different eras. Each version retained the name but featured varying outcomes for the characters, with the 1950s iteration featuring a not-so-plucky ending compared to its more current counterpart in 2003. Yet the resonant themes, centered on an unsinkable family’s resilience during trying times, are what tie them together.

A joyless exercise in IP mining, “Cheaper by the Dozen” is all the more depressing for its glimpses of unfulfilled potential.
No one really needed to follow up a 2005 sequel of a 2003 remake of a 1950 adaptation of a 1948 autobiographical novel. But if you’re going to attempt to bring this story into the present day, you couldn’t ask for a better team than director Gail Lerner and writers Kenya Barris and Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry (“Grown-ish”). And who wouldn’t want to see a charmingly practical Gabrielle Union reign over lots of cute kids and a loving — if lackluster — husband played by Zach Braff?
Other than Braff, who isn’t actually supposed to be playing lackluster, it’s hard to say where everything went wrong. Lerner, Barris, and Henry all work primarily in TV, but that shouldn’t have been an unscalable obstacle. Barris co-wrote 2017’s raucous “Girls Trip,” and...

Disney should have been “Cheaper” when it came to funding “hate,” according to Gabrielle Union.
The “Cheaper by the Dozen” Disney+ star slammed the Walt Disney Co. and CEO Bob Chapek for the corporation’s political donations in Florida, which in part funded the homophobic and transphobic “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

Under the pact, Rice-Genzuk Henry already is working on a couple of projects, including Snatched, an hour-long dramedy in development at Showtime, about two women seeking to “enhance” their lives with plastic surgery; and Unlikely Stepmom, an adaptation of a French format (co-created by Agnes Hurstel and Lea Domenach) about a 25-year-old woman who falls in love with a middle-aged man, who, after a whirlwind romance reveals that he has a six-year-old daughter.
“As BET aligns with the evolving media landscape, BET Studios provides storytellers creative autonomy, leaving room for more veritable representation of Black culture on screen,” said Aisha Summers Burke, EVP, and General Manager,...

Exclusive: Succession‘s Alan Ruck is the latest addition to the cast of Amazon Studios’ film The Burial, which is currently in production. He joins an ensemble that also includes Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Jurnee Smollett, Mamoudou Athie, Bill Camp, Dorian Missick, Pamela Reed, Amanda Warren and Jim Klock.
The film from director Maggie Betts is based on the New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr. It follows a charismatic personal injury lawyer famous for his impressive track record and loudly unconventional approach who decides to help a funeral home owner save his family business from a predatory corporate behemoth. In a move to bring emotional resonance to a dry contract law case, the lawyer digs up an unexpected and complex web of race, power and oppression that forces everyone to examine long-buried prejudices they didn’t know they had.
Doug Wright adapted the screenplay. Bobby Shriver is producing for Bobby Shriver Inc.

Warner Bros. has debuted a new trailer for the romantic comedy ‘Moonshot.’
Like many 20-somethings her age, Sophie (Lana Condor) is faced with a world of choices. Sure, there’s the future stuff, the family stuff, the job stuff. But, where she is truly confused is on the big choice, the momentous one, the top-of-list one that stands out—what to do about him!
Her long-term b.f. Calvin (Mason Gooding) has moved with his family and taken a job out of town. As in way out of town. A published scientist, Calvin’s posting was supposed to be temporary and now, that “temporary” is beginning to read more like “permanent.” Then there’s Walt (Cole Sprouse), who’s also confronted with choices, but maybe not so many. He’s pretty content with his going nowhere assistant barista job in a college bookshop and his solitary existence. That is, until...

As we limp into the third year of the pandemic, placating platitudes like “nothing is ever set in stone” continue to be the order of the day, as does tremendous flexibility when it comes to something relatively minor like, oh, when your next favorite movie is coming out. Despite the unpredictability of 2020 and 2021, female filmmakers continue to make great strides, from winning the top awards at the majority of last year’s biggest festivals, notching only the second woman to win the Best Director Oscar (Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland”), and churning out big-time box office hits.
While it’s still unclear if 2022 will provide a bounceback for the box office and its rising (and established) women talents, there are some positive indicators. According to the latest study from the Celluloid Ceiling, the longest-running and most comprehensive study of women’s employment in film, women directors were up overall in 2020. Women...

Shawn Levy is a filmmaker who loves to honor those who came before him. Just a few minutes into his Netflix feature “The Adam Project,” he’s nodded to everything from “Star Wars” to “Back to the Future”; last summer’s Disney blockbuster “Free Guy” concludes with a glorious Easter egg-heavy ending that included yet another “Star Wars” wink, well-trod MCU goodies, and even a Chris Evans cameo.
Beyond his love for the modern canon, Levy has spent years building something unique: his own library of original films. “Free Guy” was a massive pandemic-era hit. His 2006 “Night at the Museum” film spawned two sequels (the third is a 2022 animated feature for Disney+); the franchise has earned over $1 billion. Alongside the Duffer brothers and fellow producer Dan Cohen, Levy helped turn Netflix’s “Stranger Things” into a monster hit. Levy loves his influences, but he also loves turning them into something new.

It’s been a grueling three months since Marvel fans had a hit of the MCU in the form of Spider-Man: No Way Home and even longer since the last Marvel Disney+ series (Hawkeye). Thankfully that unbearable drought will be coming to an end with Disney+’s list of new releases for March 2022.
This month is highlighted by the arrival of Moon Knight on March 30. Oscar Isaac stars as the latest Marvel hero, a man with a fracturing personality and awesome power imbued by the Egyptian god Khonshu. Tonally, this seems like a really divergent take from the studio and the trailers promise some compelling mystery and bone-shattering punches if nothing else.
