The BBFC has clarified its plans to use AI technology in the classification of films, TV shows and streaming content in a statement given to Film Stories.
The BBFC – which is responsible for age classification guidelines across the cinema and terrestrial TV industries in the UK – published its Annual Report and Accounts for 2023 yesterday (13th November), in which it reiterated its commitment to the use of AI following a collaboration with Amazon Web Services announced last summer.
After Film Stories got in touch, we’ve now got slightly more clarification on what the AI tools in development might look like, including a more precise look at how generative AI will be used in the classification of video content.
The Board’s annual report already reiterated the ongoing development of two distinct AI tools, designed to be used in concert with each other. By using human-generated metadata, the first tool in...

Horror flick Five Nights at Freddy’s and Billie Eilish’s Live At The O2 concert film were the subject of the most complaints lodged with the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in 2023, according to the body’s annual report.
The BBFC received 26 complaints about Five Nights at Freddy’s and 17 about Billie Eilish Live At The O2. All of the complaints were in relation to the age ratings of the films. Both were given 15 ratings. Each of the complaints was from cinemagoers under 15 who were unable to see the films.
The BBFC said it handed Five Nights At Freddy’s a 15 rating because the flick “features scenes of strong and sustained threat.”
“The intensity of these scenes and their frequency within the film meant that we were unable to classify the film at 12A,” the body said.

Five Nights At Freddy’s and Billie Eilish lead the complaints to the BBFC in 2023, its new annual report has revealed. More here:
The British Board Of Film Classification – better known as the BBFC – has today released its annual report, the headline of which is the peak number of 12A and 15 certificate films in 2023.
However, I always turn straight to the ‘feedback from the public’ section – page 10 of this year’s report – and it rarely disappoints, even if 2023 was quite a calm year.
The BBFC received 148 complaints about its classification decisions for movies released in 2023, an increase from 109 on the previous year. The hotbed this time was material getting a 15 certificate that those a little younger wanted to see.
The most complained about decision – 26 people opting to get in touch – concerned the 15 certificate given to the movie Five Nights At Freddy’s. There’s some legitimacy to the complaints too, given the...

The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So, of course, there’s a sequel coming our way, aiming for a December 5, 2025 theatrical release. Sometimes the line between entertainment and reality becomes downright blurry. And nowhere is this more evident than with the unexpected rise of Five Nights at Diddy’s, a fan-made game that’s taking the internet by storm.
Drawing inspiration from the popular Five Nights at Freddy’s series, the fan-made video game is a sharp, satirical jab at its real-life muse—hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. While he is entangled in a web of serious legal battles, the game is certainly turning heads, leaving people wondering if it’s all just a little too close for comfort.

Diddy, once the king of hip-hop and fashion, now finds himself behind bars in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, awaiting a federal trial on charges of s*x trafficking and racketeering. The allegations are staggering, though Combs has pleaded not guilty.

Matthew Lillard has one big reason why he turned down an opportunity to compete on Dancing With the Stars.
The actor recently opened up to Business Insider about his early career struggles, specifically after 2004’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed bombed at the box office, much to his surprise.
“I thought I’d be No. 1 on the call sheet for the next 10 years of movies,” Lillard said about the Scooby-Doo sequel, which saw him play Shaggy. “And the reality was, the exact opposite happened.”
As a result, Lillard was forced to reevaluate his career, and that’s when his team at the time pitched him on joining ABC’s dancing competition series. However, the actor wasn’t jumping at the idea.
“I was going to do Dancing with the Stars. And I was like, if I do Dancing with the Stars, I’ll never win an Academy Award,” Lillard said. “If...

Matthew Lillard had much, much higher expectations for the infamous 2004 box-office bomb “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.”
At the time, Lillard had secured the biggest salary of his career to reprise the role of Shaggy for the sequel film. The original live-action/CGI feature “Scooby-Doo” was a massive success in 2002, and the James Gunn-penned film franchise poised Lillard to become an A-list star…or so he thought.
“I thought I’d be No. 1 on the call sheet for the next 10 years of movies,” Lillard told Business Insider. “And the reality was the exact opposite happened.”
Instead, “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” forced Lillard to reexamine his career. After appearing in Wes Craven’s “Scream” prior to “Scooby,” Lillard had to decide whether he wanted to be famous or a “great actor,” in a binary sense.

The 10 Freakiest Film & TV Dolls of All Time — From Chucky to M3GAN - Main Image
When people think of something scary for Halloween, usually they think up some kind of big scary monster or psychopath with a weapon; but there’s also some horror to be found from the exact opposite of big monsters—creepy little dolls.
The horror genre has had some very memorable creepy dolls for decades, and we take a look at some that are worth checking out for anyone looking to get spooked for the Halloween season.
Chucky (Child’s Play)
Probably responsible for a lot of trauma for millennials when it comes to dolls, Chucky made his debut in 1988’s Child’s Play. His origin is that Chucky was originally serial killer Charles Lee Ray who was dying in a toy store, and in a last-ditch effort committed some voodoo to transfer his consciousness into...

The impact that Kevin Wiliamson and Wes Craven had with Scream way back in 1996 is undeniable. “Ghostface” become quite a horror legend, As well, the classic feature spawned a new group of actors to popularity. Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Drew Barrymore (of course), and more. The features also offered up a stand-out performance was given by Matthew Lillard as “Stu Machner.” The actor is perhaps just as memorable in the classic than the three leads who survived a few more masked psychos along the way.
The actor continued to work in many a comedy. Even still it seems that he tends to get noticed as a horror guy. Thanks to movies like Scream, Thir13en Ghosts, and now Five Nights at Freddy’s, the dude has earned his genre cred. So much so that Lillard has moved into a few other lanes with his career. The video game to film adaptation pipeline continues to slowly dominate Hollywood now that superhero movies are no longer the sure-fire hits they once were. While we wait for "Five Nights at Freddy's 2" to deliver the animatronic scares next year, Hollywood just found its next indie horror game to adapt for the big screen.
According to a Bloody Disgusting report, Lionsgate is now working on a movie adaptation of the hugely popular horror video game "Outlast" from developer Red Barrels. Though there is no director attached just yet, Roy Lee, who produced recent horror darlings like "Barbarian," "Late Night with the Devil," and "Strange Darling," will produce the movie adaptation. More exciting, however, is the news that the screenplay is being penned by J.T. Petty, who wrote the story of the original "Outlast" game, as well as its two sequels. New York Comic Con 2024 is officially over, and we're still reeling over all the news that was released during the popular convention. One piece of news that really stuck out to us was Jason Blum sharing an update on the upcoming Dead by Daylight movie. He gave a little update on where he and the movie's creative team are when it comes to the filmmaking process, and we'd say it's a pretty hopeful update.
Word of a Dead by Daylight movie first emerged back in March 2023. At the time, it was announced that James Wan's Atomic Monster and Jason Blum's Blumhouse would be collaborating with Behaviour Interactive to create a feature film adaptation of the popular horror multiplayer video game of the same name. It was also revealed at the time that a search had begun for a director and screenwriter for the movie.

The “Sonic the Hedgehog” movies have become some of the most lucrative video game adaptations in Hollywood history, proving that Sega characters can be major draws at the box office. And while the franchise is still going strong — Jim Carrey is coming out of retirement to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming third film — gamers clamoring to see more non-hedgehog properties from the Sega canon on the big screen are in for a treat. The iconic video game company is teaming up with Universal Pictures on a film adaptation of “Shinobi,” the ninja game that has delighted arcade goers for nearly four decades, IndieWire has learned.
The “Shinobi” film will be directed by Sam Hargraves, who is best known for directing “Extraction” and “Extraction 2” for Netflix. Ken Kobayashi will write the script. No casting details or release date have been announced.

Sam Hargrave, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s “Extraction” films, is attached to direct the “Shinobi” movie from a screenplay by Ken Kobayashi (“Sunny”).
The “Shinobi” series first debuted in 1987 as an arcade game and follows protagonist Joe Musashi as a modern-day ninja who confronts great evil. Universal is also developing an adaptation of the video game “Ruiner” with “Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball.

The negative word-of-mouth around Warner Bros.’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” is already dealing big blows to its box office fortunes. After making just $11.1 million on Saturday — a drop from the $20.1 million earned Friday even after the $7 million from Thursday previews are removed — opening weekend estimates for this $190 million budget tentpole have now fallen to $39 million.
Not only is that below the $50-55 million pre-weekend projections and just 40% of the October record $96 million opening of the first “Joker” in 2019, but it is now nearly matching the $39 million opening of Sony’s maligned 2022 Marvel film “Morbius” and could slip even below that should walk-up ticket sales continue to sag.
Todd Phillips’ film, a courthouse drama with dream musical sequences, has seen its Rotten Tomatoes score fall to 33% critics and 31% audience. CinemaScore polls yielded a D, the lowest grade ever for a comic book film.

Josh Hutcherson is treating fans to a second serving at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
As he prepares to enter production on the upcoming sequel in New Orleans, the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 star said that “fans are gonna flip” for the follow-up to director Emma Tammi‘s 2023 feature adaptation of the popular horror video game series.
“It’s much bigger; the stakes are higher,” Hutcherson told Esquire. “There’s more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way.”
Fnaf stars Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, a troubled security guard who begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be as easy a gig as he thought.

Josh Hutcherson has offered some intel on the sequel to “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” teasing that “it’s gonna be scarier” than the first movie.
“It’s much bigger; the stakes are higher,” Hutcherson told Esquire. “There’s more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way.”
He added, “We’re finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded. Until a few years ago, any video game adaptation felt like a bad investment for studios, as comic book properties were being adapted left and right, and everybody seemed to be keen on developing their own cinematic universe a la the MCU.
Jack Black in A Minecraft Movie || Legendary Pictures
However, come the success of films like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it has become the case that studios want to take chances with video game properties once more. Even on the small screen, there seems to be a lot of quality that is being put out, with shows like Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, or even Castlevania. While these shows and films have re-instated gamers’ willingness to trust Hollywood, A Minecraft Movie might just be on its way to hurting gamers once more.

Theatrical experiences are essential, but there's also something to be said for getting the pants scared off you in your own home. Netflix watchers seem to agree, as they've been flocking to "Evil Dead Rise" en masse since it hit the streamer just two days ago, according to FlixPatrol. The analytics site tracks what Netflix subscribers are watching, and Lee Cronin's gross and grimy addition to the Sam Raimi-created "Evil Dead" universe is currently the second-most watched movie on Netflix according to its metrics.
"Evil Dead Rise" is losing out only to "The Garfield Movie," which is no surprise given that kids' movies typically dominate the home media charts (likely for both rewatchability and ease of access reasons). The two titles couldn't be more different, though, as one features a cat who loves lasagna and one (literally) takes a cheese grater to a demonically-possessed woman's leg. As skin-crawling at that scene is,...

Packing all the seasonal joy of a stocking stuffed with offal or a wreath made of human tongues, writer-director Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 turns the most wonderful time of the year into a gut-churning festival of carnage. Leveling up from the viral hit that was Terrifier 2 with a bigger budget, stronger performances, and a more well-modulated tone, the film is chockablock with enough nasty delights and surprising amounts of heart to lift the series from its origins as a glorified effects reel into something near splat cinema art.

Founded in 2005 by Tim League, the offbeat festival includes dozens of feature films, several shorts programs, two episodic premieres for TV, a notorious “debate” night (featuring a… boxing element?!), various live performances, and more. BlumFest has found its lineup for this year’s Halloween season. It will kick off with the 2009 found footage feature Paranormal Activity, that will get a one-night only re-release.
Writer-director Oren Pel’s Paranormal Activity kicks off the fest on Sept. 25 in 150 AMC locations in 54 cities. It will be followed every Wednesday by a different Blumhouse movie, which will screen at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time, and include free poster giveaways and sneak peeks at upcoming projects.
Lights Out arrives Oct. 2. The feature was a breakout for Shazam! director David F. Sandberg, who wrote the film with Eric Heisserer. The film was not a Blumhouse release, but actually hails from Atomic Monster, the James Wan run-company that recently merged with Blumhouse.
Insidious: Chapter 2 comes a week later on Oct. 9. The feature reteamed Saw duo Wan and Leigh Whannell, who wrote the script, with Wan direting.

Even if you're not a horror fan, you've probably watched a Blumhouse film without knowing it ("Whiplash?" "Jem and the Holograms?" "Tooth Fairy?"). Jason Blum's nightmare factory is synonymous with today's mainstream horror pillars, securing the rights to everything from "Halloween" to "The Exorcist" and beyond. Indeed, it's impossible to banter about our contemporary horror era without acknowledging how prevalent and prodigious Blumhouse has become — so why does it feel like it's ghosting us this year?
Blumhouse decimated last year's horror movie market. In 2023, Blum's juggernaut scared up nearly $800 million worldwide in box office totals. Emma Tammi's video game adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy's" boasted a high score of $297 million on a $20 million budget — one of nine films released by Blumhouse. Now, there's no metric for reporting for streaming titles like...
