Even in his portrayal of the Joker, Christopher Nolan found the influence of time and distortions of matter playing a huge part. In The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger created history with his Oscar-winning portrayal of the Batman villain. But for Nolan, the movie was the culmination of a nightmare that chased him for decades since he was a teenager.

In many ways, Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is rightfully considered the best Batman adaptation to exist on screen. But it doesn’t merely constitute a comic book story brought to life. Nolan’s films take inspiration from the triptychs of Francis Bacon, the 20th-century painter who used his canvas to bring raw and unsettling images to life.

At six of the last 11 Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019) and Hoyte van Hoytema and Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer” (2024). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Cinematography.)
The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. A lot of things went wrong with Joker: Folie à Deux. But the worst one of all was Todd Phillips’ misguided belief that marrying the maniacal Batman villain who revels in chaos, carves up his face for laughs, and kills people as an afterthought with La La Land would be a good idea. Joker 2 does not work as a fantasy derivative of some rom-com musical. The film only works if it remembers what, or rather who, it is marketing – the Joker.

Meanwhile, Phillips, propelled by the success of his 2019 film, perhaps grew too lax to understand the weight of the sequel. The first film, made on a $60 million budget, earned $1.1 billion by the end of its theatrical run. Imaginary. Borderlands. The Crow. Megalopolis. 2024 has been a colossally bad year for Lionsgate Films. Whether it’s critical ratings or box office take, there’s not a lot to be optimistic about if you’re a fan or shareholder. This is too bad as Lionsgate has always been the studio I’ve always rooted for. As distributors of the Saw, John Wick, and Rambo they’ve always had an edge to them, giving smaller films a chance to reach larger audiences. And franchises like Twilight (purchased from Summit), Divergent, and Hunger Games showed their ability to make/acquire broadly appealing films. Then they’ve even gotten into the Oscar space with releases like La La Land, Knives Out, and Sicario. But it’s getting to the point where I groan every time the Lionsgate logo comes up as it’s no longer a sign of quality or fun.

Remember the time when Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds kissed in the background when Ryan Gosling won the Golden Globe for La La Land? Well, what’s funnier is that many people actually believed Gosling was playing Garfield in the film, which they speculated to be based on his love story with Emma Stone. It’s an absurd rumor and Garfield admits that social media can be a weird place.

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” Stone is back in the race this year with “Kinds of Kindness,” which reunites her with “Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos. However that trippy trilogy is unlikely to bring them back to the Oscars. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Actress.)

In 2010 the academy expanded the Best Picture field from just five nominees and reintroduced the preferential ballot to decide the winner. Over the ensuing 15 years, we’ve seen six splits between the winners of Best Picture and Best Director (which still has just five nominees). Prior to this such splits were fairly rare. Why the change? (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
At the Oscars, the winner of Best Picture is determined by a weighted ballot and the outcomes of the other 22 races, including Best Director, are decided by a popular vote. With two different voting systems, it’s easy to understand why there is often a disconnect between the winners of Best Picture and Best Director.
In 2022, Jane Campion won Best Director for “The Power of the Dog” but “Coda” was named Best Picture. In 2019 Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director for “Roma” only to see...

Nicole Kidman could be on the verge of receiving her sixth acting Oscar bid for the upcoming A24 erotic thriller “Babygirl,” directed by Halina Reijn, best known for the indie film “Bodies Bodies Bodies” (2022). With the movie already making its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and Kidman taking home the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, let’s take a closer look at her five previous Oscar nominations, including her one win.
Her first recognition came for the Baz Luhrmann jukebox musical “Moulin Rouge” (2001), where Kidman portrayed a cabaret performer and courtesan in love with an English poet. It is certainly one of her most physical performances, as she performs extravagant musical numbers and showcases strong emotions as her character Satine suffers through an illness. Kidman won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and was part of the movie’s eight Oscar nominations,...

The decade of the 2010s had a lot of great cinema to offer with exciting superhero team ups, advancements in visual effects, revivals of classic franchises, and many new exciting directors coming into the limelight. One of the most promising young talents to succeed in this time was Damien Chazelle, the youngest director to have won the Academy Award for Best Director. While ‘La La Land’ might have been his greatest success and one of the most beloved films of the last decade, it could not have been made if it wasn’t for the triumph of ‘Whiplash’. Chazelle wrote the film as he was struggling to get ‘La La Land’ financed, which ended up enhancing the script as the frustration Chazelle felt at the time worked its way into the character’s own struggle to achieve his own dream of being a great drummer. This goes to prove that...

Ah, rom-coms! Who could forget those, silly little romances that made our hearts flutter? The ’90s and early 2000s were pure magic for love stories, they really don’t make them like that anymore! Fast forward to the 2010s, and it feels like the genre has taken a nosedive. But why? Sandra Bullock recently spilled the tea on why classic rom-coms seem to have gone Mia.

Concerns about Warren Beatty’s health are nothing new.
After all, the 87-year-old has been a household name since the ’60s, and these days, he rarely appears in public. So it stands to reason that there would be occasional speculation about his overall condition.
The latest round of fears about the screen legend’s well-being began back in March when he was conspicuously absent from daughter Ella’s Broadway debut.

This article contains spoilers for the Sept. 24 episode of “Dancing With the Stars.”
Week 2 of “Dancing With the Stars” was “Oscars Night,” with couples dancing to songs from films including “Barbie,” “A Star is Born,” “La La Land” and “Superman,” while Olympic rugby player Ilona Maher and pro Alan Bersten both lifted each other in a Salsa set to to “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” from “Dirty Dancing.”

Terrence Howard spoke about Robert Downey Jr.’s role the Iron Man drama (Photo Credit – Instagram)
According to Howard, the Marvel Studios cash cow didn’t come cheap for everyone involved.
Let’s rewind to the early days of Iron Man. Marvel had their sights set on a different star for the role of Tony Stark. But guess what? Downey Jr. swooped in after the casting team had made their picks, battling the studio’s initial reluctance. Still, he made the cut, and the rest is cinematic history.
Now, Howard’s side of the story is where things get juicy. As the original Rhodey, Howard was making bank—reportedly between $3.5 and $4.5 million, making him the highest-paid star of the film. The deal came with a promise: if Iron Man 2 happened, he’d be back as War Machine with an extra $5 million on the table. Sounds sweet, right?

Angelina Jolie did her own stunts in Salt (Photo Credit – YouTube)
At Comic-Con in San Diego, Jolie recounted the accident. While tumbling into a doorway with a gun, she sliced open her face just above her nose. “I was bleeding and I have a little scar now,” she admitted.
Despite the mishap, she brushed it off with her signature coolness. Jolie initially thought she had a concussion because she couldn’t hear anything. Turns out, she just had earplugs in. “I couldn’t hear everybody well and I thought ‘oh god, I’ve done it. I have a concussion’.
But it turns out, I just still had my earplugs in, so I was fine,” she told the audience.

Forget 'Send In The Clowns' — how about 'Send Down The Clown'? That certainly looks to be the idea in the latest trailer for Todd Phillips all-singing, all-dancing movie with music Joker: Folie À Deux, which sees Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck taking to the stand as he goes on trial for the televised killing of Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) in Joker. Joining him in the courtroom — and Arkham Asylum (and in a slew of fantastical musical_esque_ sequences) — is Harley "Lee" Quinn, with whom yer man Joker strikes up a potentially romantic, definitely dangerous bond. Check out the trailer, in which Phoenix and Gaga use music and song to express that which words alone are not enough to say, below:
"They're saying you're a bad influence on me," says Gaga at the start of the new trailer, which juxtaposes more of Phillips' 70s inspired, gritty take on Gotham as...

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.
Two out of 2024’s Best Actress nominees were nominated for playing fictional people. The others were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”). However,...

While Stephen King is known as the King of Horror, he has produced masterpieces when he deviated from his usual genre. Examples of such works include The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. Now, King’s sci-fi novella, The Life of Chuck, from his collection If It Bleeds is adapted into a film, that debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film, helmed by Mike Flanagan, was awarded the People’s Choice Award at the TIFF. The recognition has great significance for the film as fifteen of the last sixteen winners have been nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The Life of Chuck will probably follow suit and earn a Best Picture nod at the Oscars.

Does anyone remember when the first season of “Arrested Development” beat out the final season of “Sex and the City” at the Emmys? Or the iconic moment when “Moonlight” snatched the Oscar for best picture from “La La Land” after a historic mix-up? Awards shows are no stranger to stunning upsets, and this year, FX’s “The Bear” finds itself among the ranks of notable jaw-dropping moments, losing the Emmy for outstanding comedy series to HBO/Max’s “Hacks.”
Despite its loss in the top category, “The Bear” shattered the all-time comedy series record with 11 wins, a monumental feat that only makes its three losses — each to “Hacks” — in lead comedy actress, writing, and, of course, the big prize, feel all the more jarring.

Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck picked up the top People’s Choice honor Sunday at the Toronto Film Festival as its 2024 edition wrapped with renewed celebrity heat but still in the shadow of Venice and Cannes.
The Stephen King novella adaptation stars Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Karen Gillan and Chiwetel Ejiofor in a genre-tripping film about embracing hope in the face of tragedy and had a world premiere in Toronto. Flanagan in a statement thanked TIFF for the top audience award prize: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed. We’re so grateful that The Life of Chuck connected with audiences in such a powerful way, but never expected this.”
The second runner up for the People’s Choice Award was Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a queer crime musical headed to Netflix that earned the jury prize in Cannes for the director, while the titular lead Karla Sofía Gascón became...

The People’s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2024 Toronto Film Festival has gone to The Life of Chuck, first runner-up is Emilia Pérez, and second runner-up is Anora. The Documentary Award goes to The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, and the Midnight Madness winner is The Substance.
Both runners-up Emilia Pérez and Anora were big winners at Cannes in May (the latter taking the Palme d’Or), but Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck was a TIFF world premiere and a surprise winner of this award.
Tom Hiddleston stars in the film based on King’s novella about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz. It is an unusual winner here for this award as it currently is looking for distribution and has no set release date, which means it could be the first People’s Choice winner in recent memory...

Among the current roster of anime and manga series, Spy x Family is one of the most refreshing. It perfectly balances the intense war setting with the lighthearted dynamics between the Forgers. These elements make it one of the anime series which are more compatible with the live-action format. A Spy x Family live-action could be the perfect blend of comedy and action, with the right casting.

Ryan Gosling almost suited up as a superhero, and the story behind it is wild! Before joining the Barbie world or serenading us in La La Land, Gosling was eyeing a different kind of role—a superhero flick that once had the Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, attached. Yeah, imagine Gosling trading in his smooth, brooding charm for some crime-fighting action.

While we didn’t get to see him don a cape (or claws), just knowing he considered it has us wondering what could’ve been. Was this an alternate reality where Ken and Wolverine join forces? Maybe. Either way, this what-if is giving us some serious comic-book movie Fomo!

The 76th Primetime Emmys may not take place until this Sunday, but that hasn't stopped the first batch of shiny gold statues from being dutifully doled out already. During a star-studded ceremony at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — often referred to as the Tech Emmys — were announced. And, perhaps unsurprisingly given the staggering number of nominations achieved between them, feudal Japanese epic Shōgun and frenetic kitchen drama The Bear emerged as the two-night event's biggest winners. The former won an unprecedented 14 gongs, usurping Game Of Thrones' previous single drama series record of 12, whilst the latter snagged a not-too-shabby seven statues — including Guest Actor and Guest Actress awards for Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis' Donna and Michael Berzatto.

Whiplash was a miracle film made in 20 days by a ragtag team of an up-and-coming actor and a new director with a $3 million budget. After it premiered, Whiplash walked away with 5 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay for Damien Chazelle, and won 3, including Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons.
Whiplash (2014) [Credit: Sony Pictures]
However, it is not the awards and the statistics that make Whiplash such an enduring work of postmodern art. The dialogue, performance, delivery, and intensity contained within each frame of that film qualify it as one of the best movies of all time.
Even more surprisingly, it was the experience and maturity with which the then 28-year-old director carried himself that helped solidify Whiplash as a once-in-a-lifetime movie.

However, it is not the awards and the statistics that make Whiplash such an enduring work of postmodern art. The dialogue, performance, delivery, and intensity contained within each frame of that film qualify it as one of the best movies of all time.

Collin D’Cunha surely has what it takes. Call Me Bae, which is streaming on Amazon Prime from September 6, is no ordinary happening. It is monstrously entertaining and insanely binge-worthy. What’s more, it doesn’t make any concerted effort to seduce us into its storytelling.
It doesn’t need to. It breaks all the rudimentary rules of the streaming business with content that is unapologetically formulistic and emphatically entertaining. The series is at once a jolt to the norm and a visit to La La Land.
Every character is real yet fairytale-like. Good looks are prerequisite. But no one here is an airhead. The protagonist discusses Naipaul with as much authority as Gucci. The idea is to tease audiences with a high dose of the don’t-we-know-this-character aphrodisiac.
Vir Das is especially a scream as a self-obsessed news journalist who shouts his way into nightly attention through the TRPs. The rest of the cast too,...

On Monday, December 9, “Guiding Light” alum Taye Diggs, Chris Jones, Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf”), Bruno Tonioli (“Dancing with the Stars”) and James Van Der Beek will join Anthony Anderson (“black-ish”) in baring it all to help raise awareness for prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer testing and research in an all-new primetime special airing on Fox.
Titled “The Real Full Monty,” which is inspired by the beloved, award-winning 1997 film, the two-hour special will see the male celebrities train and rehearse for the most revealing performance of their careers, as they seek to encourage men to get themselves checked out by stripping the stigma around prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer.
Anderson, who also executive produces the special, will lead Diggs, Jones, Posey, Tonioli and Van Der Beek toward their big strip-tease dance, choreographed by Emmy Award-winner Mandy Moore.
According to a synopsis, “The Real Full Monty” will see the group bare all...

Ryan Gosling might have undertaken various roles across different genres but fans love him best for his dramatic portrayals in the romantic genre. From the critically acclaimed The Notebook to Crazy, Stupid, Love, Gosling is Hollywood’s typical ‘nice guy’ (and an actual one at that), who seems to shine best in romantic dramas, whether they be comedy or downright agonizing.

One of his most excruciatingly painful yet beautiful romantic films was La La Land opposite Emma Stone. A bittersweet film, some viewers have gone as far as labeling it a ‘horror movie’ for the emotional rollercoaster it was. However, many seem to forget Gosling’s one Indie film that is so brutal that it even makes his Oscar-winning film look like a joyful dream in comparison.
