Back in 1979, the first Alien movie became a sensation that set the bar really high for science fiction horrors. Its legacy still lives on, not only in numerous sequels and spin-offs, but also in films that try to ride the same hype train that Ridley Scott rode.
If you think all those attempts to make an Alien-like movie are failures, think again, as 7 years ago the world saw a decent all-star take on this sci-fi gem. Luckily, it lands on Netflix already next week, so it’d be great to see if it stands the test of time.
The plot of this flick revolves around a group of six astronauts of the International Space Station who make an unprecedented discovery: they find the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. However, the further their research goes, the more terror the rapidly evolving life-form brings to the crew, and they must fight with it to survive.

Jade begins with an animated sequence telling us that Jade and her brother Brandon came to live in Albuquerque, New Mexico after their parents were murdered in London. Why or by whom they were killed isn’t explained. Nor is exactly how they ended up in a street gang, or how that led to Jade accidentally killing her brother, made clear. But whatever the reason, she’s sworn never to use a gun again.
Once the film turn to live action, we see Jade dropping in to see Layla who is not happy to see her. That might be because the baby she’s carrying will never know its father, thanks to Jade’s errant bullet.
As if that isn’t enough for her to deal with, she soon...

Sixteen years after working together on Wanted, director Timur Bekmambetov and actor Chris Pratt are re-teaming for a sci-fi thriller called Mercy, which just started filming this week – and Bekmambetov has celebrated the start of filming by sharing a picture from the set! You can check it out right here:

This image reveals that the film is taking advantage of the virtual production method known as The Volume, which uses LED panels as backdrops.
Sporting a screenplay written by Marco Van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Mercy will be telling a story that is “set in the near future when capital crime has increased” and follows “a detective (Pratt] who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.”
Pratt is joined in the cast by Rebecca Ferguson (Dune), Annabelle Wallis (Malignant), and World Boxing Council middleweight champ Kali Reis,...

American Star is the latest film from Spanish director Gonzalo López-Gallego whose output has ranged from Apollo 18 and Open Grave to Backdraft 2, a 28-year later Dtv sequel to the 1991 hit. Here he and writer Nacho Faerna are presenting a variation on a well-worn theme, the criminal who’s about to pull off their last job before retiring.
In this case, the criminal is a hitman named Wilson who has come to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands to perform what should be an easy assignment. But complications ensue right from the start, when he drives out to the unnamed target’s secluded house, he’s not there. Someone does arrive, but it’s a young woman, not the man he was expecting. The idea of found footage as a filmmaking technique stretches back to at least 1961 with the release of Shirley Clarke's relatively obscure drama "The Connection." The found footage style was used to present scripted material as if it were documentary footage, employing a lot of shaky, handheld camera work and extemporaneous-sounding dialogue. The term "found footage" sprung from a common conceit of the style, which often implied that something horrible had happened to the filmmakers that prevented them from assembling and editing their footage. Once their footage was found, it was edited by a third party and presented in the theater.
There were many found footage films from 1961 until 2007, but the release and overwhelming success of Oren Peli's "Paranormal Activity" sparked a years-long wave of the format, with most of its glory-chasers employing horror as their baseline. Late 2000s found footage horror was largely effective, as it often...

Found footage horror movies are a dime a dozen, but they can still produce some of the scariest moments in horror. Whether set in a single bedroom or the vastness of the Maryland woods, plenty of the best horror movies can be found in the found footage genre.
One underrated found footage movie is the sci-fi horror film "Apollo 18." Released in 2011 and directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego from a script by Brian Miller, the film asks one question — why did we stop going to the moon? Rather than budget cuts and a lack of public interest in the space program, "Apollo 18" imagines a fictionalized version of the canceled Apollo 18 mission that quickly descends into terror and death. In the film, a trio of astronauts heading to the moon in 1974 learn their mission is not to study moon rocks or even Soviet missiles, but a recently-discovered alien species living on the moon.

Ever since the release of Wanted, I have been deeply fascinated by the career of Timur Bekmambetov, who has directed projects like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and a reimagining of Ben-Hur, produced a wide variety of genre-spanning films including the animated movie 9, Apollo 18, and Hardcore Henry, and has spent the last several years carving out his own niche in Hollywood with a handful of Screenlife films that immerse viewers in their stories through the utilization of computer and other technologies.
Bekmambetov’s latest Screenlife project is Profile, which is set to be released in theaters tomorrow, May 14th, courtesy of Focus Features (you can read my review Here). Starring Valene Kane and Shazad Latif, Profile follows an intrepid journalist looking to expose a terrorist recruiter by going undercover, but she finds herself crossing some lines once she gets drawn in by his methods.

This article contains major Batwoman spoilers.
Just like in the comics, the CW’s Batwoman started in the long shadow of Batman’s absence. Gotham didn’t know why their hero had forsaken them, and Kate missed her favorite cousin dearly. But through a complicated series of events, Batwoman and her team rose to fill the void and give Gotham hope again.
For some fans, the question has always been “But where is Bruce Wayne?” Some have been hoping for a glimpse of one of DC’s most famous and beloved heroes in live action on the small screen since Oliver Queen first started shooting tennis balls in a basement. During its season 1 finale, Batwoman made good and gave us a couple of glimpses of Bruce Wayne, albeit in a nontraditional way.
Is Bruce Wayne really on Batwoman?
Just to be clear, no. Well, not yet? We can’t say...

“It’s a bit of a seesaw effect with the colors in season two,” reveals “A Series of Unfortunate Events” costume designer Cynthia Ann Summers. “Every character’s got a story arc, so within that story arc there’s usually a color palette, and then you have to marry them all together so everybody compliments each other, or stands apart from each other.” Based on the book series by Lemony Snicket (a.k.a. Never in a million years did I think I'd live to see the day where Ron Howard's 1991 firefighter film Backdraft would be getting a sequel, but it's currently in development at Universal Pictures, and I don't know why.
According to MovieHole, the studio has hired Apollo 18 director Gonzalo López-Gallego to helm the sequel. Apollo 18 kinda sucked, so that fact that he's the guy directing the sequel make this whole Backdraft 2 thing even less exciting.
Oh yeah... I should probably mention that William Baldwin will be back to reprise his role from the original film. According to the report, the story will follow a character named Sean McCaffrey, who is the grown son of Kurt Russell’s character from the first film. He's an investigator with the Chicago F.D and still holds his uncle (Baldwin) responsible for the death of his dad.

Given all the political chatter about border control in this year’s *historic* Us presidential election, The Hollow Point stays savagely on-topic. Granted, most American citizens aren’t involved with ammo-running across country lines, but cartels are no joke – and neither is Gonzalo López-Gallego’s country-fried thriller. Social struggles tie weapons smuggling to impoverished Southern entrepreneurs, inviting boogeymen of Mexican descent to punish those who choose greed over safety. It’s a western standoff brought upon by evil, wicked men, all in the name of brutal consequence. Thugs living by a corrupt code, who we join just as bullet-slinging chickens come home to roost.
Patrick Wilson stars as the local sheriff of some forgotten U.S./Mexico border town, whose citizens are about to pay for a cartel deal gone wrong. Ken Mercey (David H. Stevens) was supposed to supply his contact with a surplus of ammunition, but his brother...

The good news is that the story of Ben-Hur is so rock solid that not even the director of “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” can screw it up completely. The sixth feature-length film or miniseries to be adapted from Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel, “Ben-Hur: A Tale of The Christ,” Timur Bekmambetov’s take on the religious epic inevitably lacks the grandeur of Fred Niblo’s 1925 silent or the girth of William Wyler’s 1959 Oscar-hoarding classic. After all, this is 2016 (more specifically, the summer of 2016), a time when movies about Jesus are pitched only to the converted, and blockbusters can only be longer than 120 minutes if they end with two iconic superheroes fighting each other to a stalemate.
But if this new “Ben-Hur” was only provided with a fraction of the potential that’s been afforded to its predecessors, it sometimes finds the strength to reach out and scrape against its frustratingly low ceiling.

There is and always will be something special about terrific unique found footage films. They tap a serious nerve. Apollo 18 broke the mold. So did The Blair Witch Project Rec Alien Abduction and Lucky Bastard. Those were standout subgenre features and if this trailer is any indicator of what genre freaks are in store for Creep may be the next handycam pic to leave viewers truly unnerved.

I’ve been a sucker for a good tomb raiding adventure film ever since I first fell in love with the Indiana Jones movies as a kid. The same goes for absolutely anything to do with ancient Egypt or the pyramids, so naturally I was excited about a chance to check out The Pyramid.
Written by Daniel Meersand and Nick Simon, The Pyramid is directed by Gregory Levasseur (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D). It makes use of the found footage storytelling device to depict the adventures of father and daughter archaeologists Miles Holden (Denis O’Hare) and Nora Holden (Ashley Hinshaw) as they explore a mysterious three-sided Giza pyramid (most of the pyramids of Giza have four sides) with their team during the Egyptian protests of 2013. At first, they rely on camera-equipped, remote-controlled robot “Shorty” to show them what’s what inside the pyramid.

It was another explosive weekend for American Sniper, which broke the record for the biggest Super Bowl weekend at the box office in its third week of wide release. Earning an estimated $31.9 million, Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-nominated drama continued to steamroll over the competition, including several wide releases that flopped or fizzled this weekend. Even with a strong take, the film dipped a bigger-than-expected 51% in its third frame, a bit worrying given the strong 28% hold that American Sniper has last week.
With an astounding $248.9 million take so far, American Sniper is already the fifth-highest grossing R-rated film of all-time. It is also a few days away from surpassing The Hangover Part II ($254.5 million), which also starred Bradley Cooper, to take fourth place on that chart. (Fun fact: Three of the five highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time in North America have Cooper in the lead role.) Beyond the Super Bowl record,...

Over the last few decades, we've seen many filmmakers take audiences to the reaches of outerspace, and with Christopher Nolan's Interstellar hitting theaters this weekend, we have a brand new supercut that celebrates some amazing cinematic trips to the stars. The video comes to us from the folks over at Fandango, and while it's (understandably) a little heavy on the Interstellar footage, it's hard not to be impressed. There are more than 20 films that come together to make up this supercut, and while it comes together beautifully, it's actually kind of funny that some of the movie's sourced were not exactly celebrated pieces of cinema. Can you guess all of them? Those Guardians of the Galaxy continued to rule the box office this Labor Day weekend. So where did that leave the horror offering As Above/So Below and the 30th anniversary re-release of arguably the most influential horror comedy of a generation?
As Above/So Below managed to continue two trends at once. First, the Paris-set Universal/Legendary horror film marks the latest found footage movie promoted in such a way as to hope you didn't know that going in. Just how on the outs is the found footage genre that Hollywood marketers are now going out of their way to downplay the format?

That puts it on pace for around $16 million for the three-day frame and over $20 million for the four-day holiday weekend. In the long run, Guardians is now guaranteed to earn over $300 million, and could finish as high as $320 million. As Above/So Below took second place on Friday with $3.2 million. That's a bit higher than recent Labor Day horror movies Apollo 18 and Shark Night 3D, though that's not saying much. In Open Grave, Sharlto Copley’s character experiences one of the worst rude awakenings possible: waking up in a pit on a bed of corpses. And that’s only the beginning of a very bad day for the poor guy, as he also faces memory loss and a group of gun-toting strangers. I’ve heard both good and bad things about Open Grave, but I am a fan of Sharlto Copley, so I plan to watch it anyway. I don’t know anything about it at all, I’ve never even watched a trailer, but the press release describes it as a “gritty zombie thriller”, so it could go either way. I skip most of the zombie movies these days, unless someone I trust tells me it’s worth a watch. From the sounds of this one, it could be interesting, and Sharlto has an interesting enough on-screen persona to make most movies he is in at least watchable. The disc drops on July 15th from Cinedigm. You can pre-order your copy here.

Coming out of Cannes is the first whiff of this contemporary, dusty American thriller from Spanish director Gonzalo López-Gallego (Apollo 18, Open Grave). Found footage films get a bad rap - and worse reviews. But the genre combines the vitality of punk rock with the reach of a video viral, and it has earned, if not respectability, then at least a respectful reappraisal. Some found footage (hereafter Ff) films are, admittedly, unwatchable (see The Devil Inside or, better, don't). But others, such as recent West Country-set religious chiller The Borderlands, or Bobcat Goldthwait's creepy Bigfoot hunt Willow Creek (out on May 2), are closer to unmissable.
Beyond an ominous title card, Ff films require little backstory, and the genre has only a brief history of its own. An uncompromising, hand-over-the-camera-lens look at totalitarianism in Vietnam-era America, Peter Watkins' 1971 mock-doc Punishment Park is considered Ff's chief forebear. Ruggiero Deodato's still-troubling Cannibal Holocaust (1979), however, is the most striking early archetype. Following a gonzo film crew into tribal Amazonia, it puts video-nasty atrocities through a film-school filter,...

Adam Rehmeier, director of the controversial The Bunny Game (2010) and the acclaimed Jonas (2013), is ready to pull the trigger on his next film, Save A Bullet For Me. This violent western / action / horror picture is slated to begin shooting later this year in British Columbia.
Rehmeier is no stranger to touching nerves and stirring outcry - The Bunny Game sparked protest worldwide, and was banned in the UK - and his new screenplay seems primed to continue the trend. Set in the Us during the 1800s, the blood-splattered film focuses on the aftermath of a brutal massacre, and two wounded frontiersmen who make a desperate last stand against a Native American war party. Spanish filmmaker Gonzalo López-Gallego hasn.t exactly made a huge splash here in the U.S., with last year.s slow-but-worthy Open Grave failing to reach wide audiences and 2011.s Apollo 18 being one of the most disappointing films I.ve ever seen. But both of those films had strong concepts, and his next film, The Man on Carrion Road, sounds just as interesting from the offset, especially now that Ian McShane has signed on to join The Conjuring.s Patrick Wilson in the violent thriller, which will be produced by Atlas Independent. While McShane is arguably always more enjoyable as the lawless badass, Deadline reports he.ll be playing a retired sheriff in The Man on Carrion Road, albeit one that doesn.t mind dealing out an asswhipping in place of a calm and considered conversation. He will team up with the town.s new sheriff (Wilson) to go...

I wasn’t the only one disappointed by Apollo 18, a found-footage horror flick that posed an interesting setup but forgot to infuse its narrative with tension, scares or even the most basic of intrigue. So, it’s safe to say that director Gonzalo López-Gallego didn’t make the greatest first impression. However, his next project, a thriller called The Man on Carrion Road, is shaping up into something far more intriguing than that half-hearted Paranormal Activity rip-off. Today, supervising studio Atlas Independent succeeded in getting the film on my mental checklist of projects to watch by announcing that Deadwood actor Ian McShane has joined the cast.
McShane will star as a retired lawman with violent tendencies who’s called back into action by the sheriff who replaced him (Patrick Wilson). They team up in order to track down those involved in a botched cartel deal and find themselves hunting...
