The original film "McLeods Daughters" came out in 1996. This is what inspired the show to be made in 2001. The film was a period piece and filmed at the same location as the TV show - at Kingsford in South Australia.
The show can seem a bit period like and out of date because to give off that sense of 'farm life' and 'far away from the city' type of folk, those pieces make it more realistic. You imagine you aren't going to find a fancy car or the latest fashion labels out in the country side, because of farmers not having big $$$ and stores not selling that type of thing in small towns. Can you imagine Claire or even Tess wearing nice clothes on the farm? They'd get dirty in seconds. Whether that be from working or just the dust from driving down the dirt roads. You can see in season 1 that Tess quickly learns that and her fashion choices change.
I also remember in season 1 they mention Gungellan being 2hrs away from Drovers. Although it doesn't seem like it in the show. One minute on the farm. The next they are in town. However, you imagine you aren't going to be going into town every day for supplies or to go to the pub. So living off the land - Megs veggie garden - and having clothes that aren't going to wear and tear easily is ideal.
Also keep in mind that farmers are up early in the morning and often working till late. Hence we never see them with a television. There just isn't enough time in the day to watch any. Their furniture is all passed down from generations showing the legacy and importance of keeping Drovers alive, especially when we see them fight for it so many times in the show. Although Drovers is a big farm, 50 acres (what they say in the show) making the big $$$ is never their forte. They are about family first, whereas, Killarney is all about business and making as much money as they can - referring to Harry Ryan. Hence when you see the inside of Killarney it all posh looking furniture - they have a helicopter and pilot licenses so flying into the big city is not an issue.
In regards to cars, well... farmers need practical cars. Ones they don't care about getting dirty or banged up. Their purpose is getting them from A to B and that is all. If you had a flash car out in the country I imagine people would give you funny looks. How many times do you see judgement being passed around on the show, especially when Tess first shows up. That is a person, so imagine a car lol. Also keep in mind that if you need a car usually you head into town for one. A place where you aren't going to be seeing any fancy dealerships.
Hope that helps lol
