Due to its tremendous success in the first series, the authors made a sequel on the second season. And since it's a Canada-France co-production, some scenes were shot in France here, mostly in Paris, the Swiss Alps and Deauville.
The story: To spawn international interest in Ice Hockey, a food conglomerate based in Switzerland want to launch a World Cup Hockey Championship in Europe and North America. Europe, the USSR (Russia), USA and Canada are chosen to be part. However, to be the best, the Canadian team needs some good players.
One of them is the star player of the Quebec National, Pierre Lambert (Carl Marotte). Since he has big shoes to fill since veteran star Marc Gagnon (Marc Messier) has retired due to personnal problems and became the coach (his wife died...), he has also problems of his own since his girlfriend, a physician, has eyes for a fellow hospital lab director. This affects his game a lot. To let him forget this split, Gagnon sent him to Europe for the team selection. Lambert has to face his father-in-law, who is the coach of Team Canada, and wants to straighten him up. Mostly his game is affected due to a relationship to a mysterious photograph (Macha Grenon), who takes drugs and whose addiction might get him into trouble... And also that Pierre's sister, Suzie (Marina Orsini) has a relationship with a French hockey player who does not know he is terminally ill... But the upcoming of a new flame, Patricia (Isabelle Miquelon), who truly loves him, might bring him on track.
There is good hockey action here (including a blooper: a camera on the ice during a hockey game ???) and of course the Russians try to give a hard time over and out, except one (Andrej Zagora) who wants to defect and whose love to a KGB agent might ruin its chances to do so at the final game of the World Cup...
However, the story began well, but becomes tedious and a bit sloppy with all the various stories going in and out (including the American player, forced by his dad to make the US team via blackmail...). Would have been good to see that if Lambert would have been really into drugs (censored at the time...) to explain its breakdown.
One final note: try to spot Wayne Gretzky on ice at the final game, he's there! (as scene was shot during 1987's NHL All star game in Quebec City).
