During Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's final act, Miles Morales returns home to defy fate and save his father from dying in a "canon" event.
During a conversation with his mother, both the audience and the hero realise something isn't quite right. The web-slinger ending up on the wrong Earth is confirmed when his Uncle Aaron - who died during Into the Spider-Verse - walks in. Things soon get even crazier when we learn this world's "Miles G. Morales" is, in fact, Prowler.
The sequel ends on a major cliffhanger, and while many of you might have assumed Shameik Moore was pulling doubt duty as his villainous doppelganger, it was actually Unstoppable star Jharrel Jerome playing the Miles whose Earth (Earth-42) never got a Spider-Man.
Talking to Collider, the actor broke his silence on the role when he said, "It’s [been] a dream since I was a child to just...

Emmy-winning actor Jharrel Jerome had to undergo a five-month training regimen to portray wrestling champion Anthony Robles in the new biopic “Unstoppable,” describing the experience as a “total transformation.” The film had its world premiere on Friday night at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the cast and filmmakers sat down with TheWrap to talk about their journey.
Jerome detailed the preparation required to portray Robles, who won a national wrestling championship despite being born with only one leg.
“It was a total transformation that was required,” Jerome told TheWrap’s Joe McGovern at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design. “I really reached out to Billy and to production, and really asked for the necessities and the tools that I can have at my disposal to try to get as close to embodying a beast like this.”

What an incredible tale of perseverance! Unstoppable tells the true story of Anthony Robles, a wrestler born with just one leg who refused to let that hold him back from achieving his dreams. Directed by William Goldenberg and starring Jharrel Jerome as Anthony, this film captures the heart and soul of a young man with an unbreakable spirit.
From a young age, Anthony knew wrestling was his passion. But with only one leg, many doubted he could go very far in such a physically demanding sport. As a teen, he proved the doubters wrong by winning a high school national championship. But college would offer new challenges. Despite his success, the top schools weren’t eager to recruit a wrestler with a visible disability.
That’s where Anthony’s mother, Judy, played brilliantly by Jennifer Lopez, became his rock. Facing struggles of her own at home, she never wavered in her support of her son.

Born with one leg, Anthony Robles literally wrestled his way to glory. He competed in his first wrestling match in the ninth grade and performed dismally the rest of his debut season. In his final year of college eligibility, he had an undefeated record and became a national champion. Robles embodies the kernel of truth at the heart of the most crucial and trite sports cliché: grit and determination will overcome every obstacle on the path to greatness. As David Merrill writes in his 2013 Deadspin profile of Robles, a one-legged man climbed “to the pinnacle of a sport that selects for such anatomical homogeneity that competitors of different weight classes frequently look like Russian nesting dolls of one another.”
By every objective metric, Robles is not only a remarkable anomaly but a profoundly inspirational person. This is the premise of “Unstoppable,” the biographical drama based on Robles’ journey to the NCAA championship title.

Inspirational sports dramas usually share key elements — struggle, setbacks, perseverance and hard-fought triumph. Even more effective if the movie centers on a disadvantaged protagonist, either economically or physically, to inject that underdog spirit. Debuting director William Goldenberg has all of that in Unstoppable, the incredible true story of wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with only one leg but never let that stop him from going after his dream. The special sauce here, however, is the bond of love and support through tough times between Anthony and his mother Judy, stirringly portrayed by Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez.

The Toronto International Film Festival reserves its opening weekend for world premieres — as in, films that did not previously screen at Sundance, Cannes, Venice or Telluride. Unfortunately for the fest, it seems like most of this season’s movies with serious awards prospects opted not to wait. Cases-in-point: two films that debuted in prime slots on Friday night, Unstoppable (5:30 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall) and We Live in Time (9:30 p.m. at the Princess of Wales Theatre). Both are very engaging and moving, but also have very narrow awards paths moving forward.
Unstoppable, the directorial debut of the Oscar-winning film editor William Goldenberg (2012’s Argo), recounts the real story of Anthony Robles, who was born with one leg and into a broken home but nevertheless manages to become a world-class college wrestler. A middlebrow triumph-against-the-odds sports crowd-pleaser can be a beautiful thing — that is, if it doesn’t pander and lose itself in clichés, and if it has as much respect for reality as it does for getting an inspirational rise out of you. “Unstoppable,” a wrestling drama based on the life of the college champion Anthony Robles, is an honest and stirring entry in the genre, with genuine commercial potential. It has plenty of familiar tropes, but in its no-frills way it touches a nerve of authenticity. The true story it tells is nothing short of extraordinary, and that may be why the filmmakers didn’t feel the need to overhype it.

Jharrel Jerome won an Emmy five years ago for his lead performance in Netflix’s “When They See Us” – and the 26-year-old actor might have other gold statues in his future after Friday night’s ecstatic reception for his underdog sports drama “Unstoppable,” which held its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

Jenny from the Block made her way to the Six for the premiere of “Unstoppable,” a heartfelt sports drama that debuted on Friday at the Toronto Film Festival.
Jennifer Lopez, who stars as a fiercely supportive mother of five, worked on the film with her ex-husband Ben Affleck, whose production company Artists Equity served as producers. Affleck was absent from the festival (he and Lopez filed for divorce in August after less than two years of marriage), but his company co-founder and friend Matt Damon attended the premiere and walked the red carpet.
Despite the gloomy weather, swarms of fans gathered by the red carpet for a glimpse — and maybe even photo — of Lopez and her co-stars Jharrel Jerome, Don Cheadle and Bobby Cannavale.

It has almost gotten to the point where inspiring sports stories become a parody of themselves, so overrun is the genre with every conceivable variation. But with Unstoppable (not to be confused with the 2004 Wesley Snipes movie or the 2010 Denzel Washington one), you really can’t compare it to anything that has come before, either in terms of what the main subject has achieved in athletics or the obstacles he had to overcome at home.
The film is based on Anthony Robles’ autobiography, and debuting director and Oscar-winning Argo editor William Goldenberg and his team of screenwriters (Eric Champnella & Alex Harris and John HIndman) have accomplished is a nifty balancing act between the harrowing home life of Robles with an abusive stepfather and his extraordinary ability to succeed in wrestling despite having only one leg, an impairment with which he was born. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s relationship continues to capture public attention as they navigate their marriage amidst rumors of challenges. Despite spending much of the summer apart, Lopez recently made a notable visit to Affleck’s Los Angeles rental home ahead of his birthday, sparking speculation of a possible reconciliation or a temporary truce. This comes after a period where the couple maintained a low profile, with Lopez celebrating her birthday alone in the Hamptons.
Sources suggest that Lopez remains deeply invested in their blended family, spending time with Affleck’s son, Samuel, and ensuring she’s present for the children before the school year begins. The couple, who rekindled their relationship and married last year, has faced speculation about their marital status, but Lopez’s recent actions indicate her continued commitment to the family.

The Toronto International Film Festival is bringing back the star power after last year’s Hollywood labor strikes led to a drought of household names at the annual gathering.
Projects from Pamela Anderson, Jennifer Lopez, Riz Ahmed, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and more will see world premieres in Toronto come September, as well as key awards contenders like Edward Berger’s “Conclave” and Sean Baker’s “Anora.”
In the special presentations section, Gia Coppola will deliver her anticipated drama “The Last Showgirl” starring Anderson. The “Baywatch” star plays a dancer who, after her long-running Las Vegas revue is abruptly canceled, is forced to reconcile with her failures and find a path forward. The film screened as a work-in-progress for potential buyers in Cannes this May, and will no doubt be one of the highest-profile sales titles at the market surrounding TIFF this year.

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson were also snubbed on the Supporting Actor side.
Below, we enumerate the top 50 Emmys snubs in our estimation. These were the shows and performers that we thought had a strong chance to number among this year’s nominees. Let us know if there are others missing from this list that...

It speaks somewhat to the predictability of the Emmys that one of the biggest surprises in this year’s nominations was the fact that a series that set a new record for comedy nominations in a single year (“The Bear”) wasn’t even more dominant than it was – landing a mere 10 acting bids spread through the lead, supporting and guest comedy categories and missing out on that record of 14 for “Succession.” But beyond that, there were some mild surprises and a few somewhat less mild ones, including the semi-dominant performance of the first-year drama “Fallout” and “Reservation Dogs” finally scoring its first comedy series nom in its third and final season.
Here are a few of the others:
SEE2024 Emmy nominations: ‘Shogun’ leads with 25, ‘The Bear’ makes history with 23
—Matt Berry landed his first-ever lead comedy actor nomination for “What We Do in the Shadows,” beating out (among others) Kelsey Grammer...

As this morning’s Emmy nominations prove, there may be less TV being made nowadays, but the quality certainly hasn’t declined with the quantity.
As widely expected, The Bear, Baby Reindeer, True Detective: Night Country and Shōgun were mentioned more than once by past Emmy winners Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale on Wednesday morning. As Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said, “it was an exceptional year in television.” It certainly seemed exceptional that, for the first time in a long while, the names Succession and Ted Lasso were not heard when the nominations were read, as those multiple winners have wrapped up their runs.

Boots Riley didn’t set out to make I’m a Virgo as a television series. Even a year after releasing the show, which premiered to critical acclaim and received four Spirit Award nominations, he’s not entirely sold on the medium. “I’m just going to be honest for the other filmmakers out there: I’m not a TV person,” he says. “I feel a little bad making TV because it’s designed to keep people hanging on — I watch shows sometimes and get offended because I know they’re just trying to keep me going to the next episode.”
But half a decade ago, when he was shopping around his idea for a follow-up project to his 2018 breakout film, Sorry to Bother You, Riley made a deep connection with Media Res founder Michael Ellenberg, before learning that he produces only for television. Riley acquiesced, and the concept — from the beginning,...

In one of Moonlight's most iconic shots, Mahershala Ali's Juan holds Alex Hibbert's Little on the surface of the ocean, his hands gently cradling the boy's head and legs. The water laps around the camera. The score swells. "That right there?" Juan says. "You in the middle of the world." He is teaching Little how to swim. This film will teach you how to feel, as director Barry Jenkins gently guides you through one of the most heartbreaking, moving and beautifully executed character studies in recent cinematic memory.

Jharrel Jerome didn’t quite know what he was getting into when he received a somewhat cryptic email from filmmaker Boots Riley early one morning during the 2020 pandemic with the subject line “13-Foot-Tall Black Man in Oakland,” but it was enough to make him jump out of bed.
“For any actor to get a personal message from a director whom you admire saying, ‘I want you for a role,’ it’s a dream,” says Jerome, who plays Cootie in Riley’s fantastical series I’m a Virgo.
The actor was then two years removed from production on his Emmy Award-winning role as Korey Wise in Ava DuVernay’s 2019 Central Park Five miniseries When They See Us, and carefully weighing his options for his next part.

“13-foot tall Black Man in Oakland.”
That’s how “I’m a Virgo” creator Boots Riley pitched his latest show to actor Jharrel Jerome. “This is the wildest title to an email I’ve seen. I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Jerome tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. A week later, Riley was in his hotel room, with a briefcase painting a picture of how this show would look like – and he had mini figurines so Jerome could have a visual.
And yes, Jerome was concerned, he thought he’d be acting in front of a green screen all day long. But that wasn’t the case. Riley — who had the entire show mapped out in his mind, long before the streaming service was involved — wanted to do everything practical and in-camera. As part of that presentation, Riley showed how he’d use specific camera angles and...

For creator, writer, director and co-showrunner Boots Riley, the idea for his Amazon Prime Video series “I’m a Virgo” came from “just wanting to talk about the differences between perception of people and how they perceive themselves.” Specifically, “if you saw a 13-foot-tall Black man walking down the street, the last thing most people would think about is what he thinks about himself, so I wanted to talk about that” and explore “people connecting to each other on a personal one-to-one level, but also on a societal level.”
But how did he turn lead actor Jharrel Jerome into that gentle giant? We gathered Riley and Jerome, along with costume designer Deirdra Elizabeth Govan, production designer Maxwell Orgell and visual effects supervisor Todd Perry for a special roundtable panel to discuss the making of the unique social satire.
