On Wednesday, Netflix's first formal Upfronts presentation brought some exciting news for fans of the streaming service's most beloved shows.
Ginny & Georgia, which has been in limbo since January, has secured a pickup for two more seasons, keeping the show on the air through what will likely be the fourth -- and final -- season.
In an exclusive post-mortem interview in January, then-showrunner Debra J. Fisher teased that she and series creator Sarah Lampert had mapped out a four-season run for the show.
The renewal announcement's delay is shocking, especially considering the show has been a strong performer for Netflix.
However, the streaming service confirmed that Sarah Glinski (Degrassi: Next Class) will take over as showrunner from Fisher.
There is no reason for the switcheroo, but fans will be happy knowing the show is returning.
Ginny & Georgia Season 2 concluded with countless cliffhangers, including Georgia being arrested for murder.

Updated: Netflix has renewed Ginny & Georgia, starring Brianne Howey and Antonia Gentry, for a third and fourth season. Sarah Glinski (Degrassi: The Next Generation) has been named showrunner for the upcoming seasons. She replaces Debra J. Fisher, who served as showrunner on the first two seasons.
Given Ginny & Georgia’s very strong performance and very appealing economics, the two-season order is not a surprise; Netflix has done it on other series with similar pedigree, including Virgin River.
What is surprising was the four-month wait for a series of that level of ratings success to be renewed. According to sources, the pickup was done awhile ago but held for Netflix’s upfront.
As for the showrunner change, there had been rumors about friction between Fisher and Ginny & Georgia creator Sarah Lampert. By April, there was speculation that Fisher would be departing the series.

Netflix is keeping Ginny & Georgia — one of its most popular series of 2023 to date — around for a while.
The streamer has picked up two more seasons of the mother-daughter dramedy starring Brianne Howey and Antonia Gentry. The renewal will take Ginny & Georgia through its fourth season. Along with the pickup, the series has also tapped a new showrunner in Sarah Glinski (Degrassi: The Next Generation). Glinski, who was hired before the Writers Guild of America began its strike, will take over for Debra J. Fisher, who ran the first two seasons.
The show’s second season, released Jan. 5, ended on a cliff-hanger. Fisher told The Hollywood Reporter that based on the ending, “season three is going to be a big roller coaster.” She also noted that when she and series creator Sarah Lampert pitched the show, they did so with four seasons in mind.

Right on the heels of being poked fun at by “Saturday Night Live,” “Ginny & Georgia” has entered the top echelon of Netflix viewership. Season 2 of the mother-daughter series has reached Netflix’s Top 10 list of English TV seasons at No. 10.
Season 2 of the series, which premiered all eight episodes on January 5, has reached a total of 504.77 million hours watched in its fifth week of availability, according to numbers provided by Netflix. The streamer additionally estimates that 56 million households watched the season, although that’s based on its total hours viewed divided by its roughly 9 hour runtime. Netflix‘s Ginny & Georgia Season 2 faced what many ongoing streaming series encounter – picking up a continuous storyline, but filming it months or even years later.
How do the filmmakers and actors recreate the same magic from the previous season after significant time has passed?
Ginny & Georgia Season 1 ended with Ginny (Antonia Gentry) learning that her mother Georgia (Brianne Howey) had murdered her stepfather. Angry and confused, Ginny steals Marcus’s (Felix Mallard) motorcycle and rides off into the night with little brother Austin (Diesel La Torraca) on the back.
Director James Genn, who was charged with knitting together Ginny & Georgia Seasons 1 and 2 recently reflected on the challenges he faced.
“I came to the series like everyone else,” Genn told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “I didn’t have anything to do with the first season and was introduced to it like the rest of the world, by turning on Netflix and bingeing the whole first season.

Black households were 25 more likely to watch the new season premiere of “Ginny & Georgia” on Netflix than the average U.S. household, new data from Samba TV showed, highlighting the appeal of shows with diverse casts.

The first episode of the show’s second season scored over 1.1 million U.S. households in its first four days available to stream. Episode 1 outpaced the first episodes of “Emily in Paris” Season 3, “Dead to Me” Season 3, “Sins of Our Mother” Season 1, “1899” Season 1 — all also on Netflix — and Hulu...

There has been no shortage of relationship drama or teenage angst on Ginny & Georgia Season 2.
TV Fanatic chatted with Executive Producer Sarah Lampert about the mother-and-daughter feud, Georgia's relationships, the focus on mental health, and the possibility of future seasons.
Check it out below.
Hi Sarah. I've always enjoyed the series. So, at the beginning of Ginny and Georgia Season 2, mother and daughter are on opposite sides. How important was it for you to push them apart and then show them repairing their relationship?
Oh, it was everything. So, we always follow three main arcs of the Season. There's Ginny's Arc, there's George's Arc, and then we give equal credence to the Ginny and Georgia relationship arc.
Season One was all about breaking these characters down and breaking these characters apart. Ginny & Georgia Season 2 was about the slow, albeit very slow, rebuilding of their relationship and rebuilding of these characters' back up.

Two words that come to mind regarding the Season 2 finale of “Ginny & Georgia” are “shotgun” and “wedding,” but not in the way you might think.
Just as Georgia (Brianne Howey) marries Wellsbury Mayor Paul Randolph (Scott Porter) in the Cinderella-esque wedding of her dreams, Detective Gabriel Cordova (Alex Mallari Jr.) crashes the ceremony to arrest Georgia for the murder of Tom Fuller, whom she did, in fact, smother with a pillow. Season 2 ends with Georgia getting taken away in a cop car and her son Austin (Diesel La Torraca) chasing after her in tears.
“As heartbreaking as it was, I love the ending because again, life is contrast, life is joy and tragedy and nothing in life gets wrapped up in a perfect bow. So why would the Season 2 finale of ‘Ginny & Georgia’?” Howey says in an interview with TheWrap.

Felix Mallard, who, like many successful Australian actors, had gotten his start on the country’s long-running soap Neighbours, was still a teenager when he was cast as the co-lead opposite Damon Wayans Jr. and Amber Stevens West in CBS’ comedy pilot (and later series) Happy Together. In it, he played a character based on Harry Styles, who executive produced the show, and, by Mallard’s own account, called him to tell him that he’d gotten the part. Roles on NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, and Netflix’s Locke & Key followed in quick succession, leading to the actor-musician being cast as Marcus on another Netflix series, coming-of-age comedy-drama Ginny & Georgia.
In Season 2, Marcus and Ginny’s romance is in full bloom after the two overcome Marcus’ ill-advised “it was a mistake” comment in the Season 1 finale.

The show was created by Sarah Lampert, who executive produces the drama about a mother and daughter alongside showrunner Debra J. Fisher. Season 2 picks up with Ginny (Antonia Gentry) having to figure out how to live with the knowledge that her mother is a murderer. Burdened with the new understanding that her step-dad, Kenny, didn’t die of natural causes, Ginny now has to deal with the fact that Georgia (Brianne Howey) not only killed, but she did it to protect Ginny. (Credit: Amanda Matlovich/Netflix) Georgia, on the other hand, would much prefer to leave the past in the past, especially when she has a wedding to plan. Of course, putting the past behind you is easier said than done because Georgia’s past never stays buried for long.

The show’s name is Ginny & Georgia, so it clearly wasn’t going to keep the mother and daughter apart for long. Following the Season 1 finale cliffhanger, in which Ginny and her little brother skipped town after she discovered that their mom had poisoned their stepfather, the Season 2 trailer features Georgia and her kids back under the same roof in Wellsbury.
Ginny is trying to live with her mom’s deadly secret while acting normal, which is proving rather difficult, and tensions rise between the two.
“I’m not normal, I’m a damaged trailer park teen mom murderer,” Georgia exclaims at one point.
While Maxine still appears mad at Ginny for hiding her relationship with her twin brother from her, Ginny and Marcus’ romance is back on despite the “mistake” comment he made in the Season 1 finale.
“You make sense to me,” Marcus tells Ginny but also adds, a little ominously,...

The second season of Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia starring Antonia Gentry and Brianne Howey will premiere on January 5, 2023. Series creator/executive producer Sarah Lampert told Netflix’s Tudum that fans can expect the new season to pick up just a few weeks after season one left off.
“We spent all of season one breaking these characters down and putting them in certain places,” explained Lampert. “So, we wanted to honor that by picking up season two just two weeks later. We jumped right back into where we emotionally left everyone at the end of season one.”

Season 2 of the hit Netflix show “Ginny & Georgia” releases Jan. 5, the streamer said Thursday.
A teaser clip released with the announcement picks up right where the first season left off with Ginny (Antonia Gentry) running away from home with her younger brother Austin (Diesel La Torraca).
The short snippet from Tudum watches Ginny’s mother Georgia (Brianne Howey) come home joyous off of her boyfriend’s political victory to discover that her daughter has left, the only sign of life some smoldering embers in the fireplace.
Set to Chet Faker and Flume’s “Drop the Game,” Georgia goes from gleefully boasting to white-hot rage, kneeling down by the fire’s remains and angrily throwing a fire poker into the opposite corner of the leftover ashes before breaking into sobs.
“The puzzle piece that was missing suddenly slides into place, and I see it,” Ginny’s voice narrates. “I see her.
