Neon’s cerebral horror feature Cuckoo had to perform more than a few clever maneuvers on its flight path to theaters.

Like many projects, the coronavirus pandemic pushed its 2020 start date. Then, delays on lead Hunter Schafer’s HBO hit Euphoria resulted in Cuckoo being pushed even further, which led to some castmembers needing to move on to other commitments, forcing the production to pivot to find new actors to join Schafer.

Writer-director’s Tilman Singer’s project was finally headed toward preproduction in West Germany when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, resulting in the German government taking Cuckoo’s filming locations to house Ukrainian refugees. It was a more than necessary response to a humanitarian crisis, something the Cuckoo team understood. But it left the production in need of other locales to shoot.

Helmed by industry veterans Ken Kao and Josh Rosenbaum, the label will offer a collaborative sanctuary for filmmakers to create horrifying auteur content, supported by the expertise of its seasoned team. The name Cweature Features (pronounced “Kwee-Cha Fee-Chas”) was inspired by the tendency of Kao’s young children to mispronounce creature as “cweature,” with their teeth still coming in. He and his wife came to realize that the little ones resembled little “cweatures” themselves, and the moment evoked nostalgia for Kao, for the period in his childhood when his early love for all things scary began. Cweature Features will embrace the idea that horror is an experience that transcends age, blending fear with fun and not taking itself too seriously.

Josh Rosenbaum has been promoted to partner at Ken Kao’s Waypoint Entertainment, the production and finance company behind Neon’s upcoming horror thriller Cuckoo.

Rosenbaum, who began his career at WME, joined the company in 2015 and has worked on films that include 2017’s Hostiles, Jared Leto starrer The Outsider, and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut, Mid 90s. Rosenbaum’s appointment to the newly created post comes after the company signed on to a slate deal with Neon that will see the company produce and finance films in the $10 million range with the speciality label.

“Whether advocating for filmmakers or seamlessly collaborating with our partner teams, those fortunate enough to work alongside him can attest to his undeniable creative prowess,” said Kao. “His multifaceted contributions across all areas of the business have been pivotal to our success, and I am excited to have him as a Partner, propelling Waypoint to even greater heights.

Neon and Waypoint have struck a strategic financial partnership to collaborate on a theatrical slate of “bold, genre-spanning”larger independent features.

The non-exclusive pact sees Waypoint, led by Ken Kao, invest in the slate after the partners worked together on Tilman Singer’s Cuckoo, which premiered in Berlinale Special gala last month.

Waypoint founder and president Kao said, “Our joint venture will focus on the underserved market of larger independent films, specifically in the $10m+ range that often get overlooked by studios and streamers.”

The 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival’s Opening Night TV Premiere is the highly anticipated Netflix series 3 Body Problem created, executive produced and written by Emmy Award winners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and Emmy Award nominee Alexander Woo. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg for what’s in store.

German filmmaker grabbed the spotlight with his Berlinale preemed directorial debut Luz (tale is about a cab driver who gets owned by a demonic entity) and he front-loaded his sophomore feature with the likes of Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens, Jessica Henwick, Marton Csókás, Jan Bluthardt, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey and Greta Fernández for what will be a Neon release. Neon has wrapped production on Tilman Singer’s Cuckoo, the feature film debut of Hunter Schafer (Euphoria). The horror film, written and directed by Singer, was shot on 35mm in Germany.

With plot details being kept under wraps, post-production is currently underway for the film’s 2023 release. Following his 2018 debut Luz, Singer became one of the most sought-after up-and-coming filmmakers. Lauded as a “major new talent” in cinema, Singer has been critically acclaimed for his genre-bending storytelling and wholly unique approach to horror.

The ensemble cast, led by Schafer, includes Dan Stevens, along with Jessica Henwick, Marton Csókás, and Greta Fernández.
