Norman Lear, Mimi Kennedy, George Takei, Marla Gibbs and George Wallace are encouraging Hollywood to take steps in creating more stories about the lives of older adults in a new #RethinkAging campaign.
In partnership with the University of Southern California Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center, the industry veterans created an amusing video announcing that they’re still very much in the game — and their stories matter.
“They said 91 is the new 60,” Gibbs said in the video. “I don’t know where they got that, honey. Ninety-one is the new 30.”
Gibbs most recently appeared in Grey’s Anatomy season 19 as the grandmother of one of the hospital’s new residents, but she’s best known for her portrayal of Florence on Lear’s 1970s sitcom The Jeffersons and her role as Mary Jenkins in the ’80s comedy 227.

Emmys 2021: Allison Janney fills ‘Mom’ farewell with hilarity and heart — can she pull off an upset?
Allison Janney’s time as Bonnie Plunkett on the CBS sitcom “Mom” began and ended in an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in a community rec room, but a lot has changed in her performance over the intervening eight seasons and 170 episodes. Janney won two Emmys for the role as an uproarious if not exaggerated recovering alcoholic mother and grandmother, but her farewell nomination this year recognizes a much more mature but equally hilarious version of the character. Bonnie Plunkett has grown, and so has Janney’s performance. Can she pull off an Emmy upset?
In a previous Emmy spotlight published before the nominations, I hoped voters would recognize Janney for her “gamut-running” and “touching” performance in the series finale. Janney submitted the episode, titled “My Kinda People and the Big To-Do,” for Emmy consideration, and it stands out as a tailor-made awards submission complete with a grand speech that caps off the half-hour.

“It has been a long time,” James Widdoes shares about earning his first-ever Emmy nomination after over 40 years in the business. The director received the recognition for his work on the final season of the CBS comedy “Mom,” a series he has worked on since its debut back in 2013. “It’s obviously a tremendous honor and thrill to be nominated,” he continues, adding that “Mom” is one of his “proudest” accomplishments because “it tackled serious subjects while at the same time it could be screamingly funny.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Widdoes directed an impressive 123 episodes of “Mom” over its eight-season run. He submitted the episode “Scooby-Doo Checks and Salisbury Steak” for Emmy consideration, which finds Allison Janney’s Bonnie Plunkett helping her therapist (Rainn Wilson) through a challenging personal decision and an unexpected reunion between former couple Jill (Jaime Pressly) and Andy (Will Sasso) during a bank robbery.

After eight seasons, 170 episodes and 10 Emmy nominations, “Mom” comes to a quiet and unexpected end this week. However as the series wraps, there’s no denying the legacy it leaves behind when it comes to the depiction of recovery on television.
When the series first bowed in 2013, co-creator Gemma Baker wanted to expand on what she had previously seen as limited takes on addiction and recovery, with characters that either relapsed at the first sign of trouble or got a happily ever after with no further exploration. “Mom” may have gone through several iterations over the years as the story expanded into an ensemble show, but through it all sobriety itself was always at the center of the story.
“In terms of recovery the characters got to change in a way that you don’t often see on a sitcom,” says Baker. “They got to grow and become different versions of themselves.

Obviously, many people love Tony Hale, and the string of socially awkward characters he’s played in dozens of vehicles. Ever since TV’s “Arrested Development,” his shtick has started wearing out its welcome for me. That gave me trepidation about this comedy about a former college nerd appointed to co-chair a class reunion, depending heavily on his ability to contact the actual Elizabeth Banks, remind her of their blink of acquaintance back then, and convince her to attend the event. As required of such films, things go terribly awry, setting up the comedic plot course. As feared, they forgot most of the comedy component.
The shame of this is the broad, talented cast the writers wasted. Alan Tudyk, Elisha Cuthbert, Sarah Chalke, Robbie Amell, Emmanuelle Vaugier, Mimi Kennedy and other familiar names and faces have all entertained us in much better films and TV series. The...

“Mom” will last only one season without Anna Farris. CBS is ending the popular comedy after its current eighth season wraps up.
The series finale is currently scheduled for May 6. Faris exited the sitcom ahead of the season last September, which left Allison Janney as the sole star.
“Mom” featured Faris and Janney as mother-daughter duo Christy and Bonnie Plunkett who rekindled their relationship after years of alcohol addiction. Faris’ character was also a single mother of two. “Mom” also stars Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner and Kristen Johnston.
The beginning of this season opened with Bonnie (Janney) and her husband Adam (William Fichtner) having dropped off Christy (Faris) at the airport. Christy, who had been going to law school in Northern California, where the show is set, is now going to Georgetown Law School on a scholarship.

CBS’ praised Mom — the network’s longest-running comedy series on the air — will end its run after the current eighth season. Mom‘s series finale has been set for May 6 in its Thursday 9 p.m. time period.
This is the last season of Mom’s two-year pickup the Chuck Lorre-produced multi-camera comedy received in 2019. Also coming up at the end of this season was the current contract for star Allison Janney, who became the series’ sole lead after the exit of Anna Faris last summer.
Eight seasons in, Mom remains a solid ratings performer and an anchor of CBS’ Thursday comedy block. Currently Mom is CBS’ No. 4 comedy behind The Neighborhood and Lorre’s Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola. (The Neigbrhood and Bob Hearts Abishola were renewed earlier today; a pickup for Young Sheldon is expected.)

(Warning: The following story contains Spoilers regarding Anna Faris’ exit from CBS’ “Mom” from the Season 8 premiere Thursday).
“Mom” wasted no time in addressing Anna Faris’ surprising departure from the CBS comedy, which she co-starred with Allison Janney for seven seasons.
Thursday’s season premiere opens with Bonnie (Janney) and her husband Adam (William Fichtner) having dropped off Christy (Faris) at the airport. Christy, who had been going to law school in Northern California, where the show is set, is now going to Georgetown Law School on a scholarship.
The rest of the episode jumps forward a month to show how Bonnie is adjusting to life without her daughter and roommate. Aside from a few references, mainly about how Christy is struggling with the three-hour difference in time zones (the episode ends with her calling Bonnie at a way-too-early hour). The bulk of the premiere, titled “Sex Bucket and the Grammar Police,...

Now that we know Mom Season 8 is coming to CBS in November, the network has dropped some details about the first season without co-lead Anna Faris.
There is still no indication of how Christy will be written out of the series, but we do know the premiere will be titled "Sex Bucket and the Grammar Police."
According to the official press release, "when Bonnie invites the ladies to a slumber party, childhood games reveal adult problems."
In photos released, we see Bonnie (Allison Janney) with Marjorie (Mimi Kennedy), Jill (Jaime Pressly), Tammy (Kristen Johnston), and Wendy (Beth Hall) and a Happy Birthday Tammy sign in the background.
Given that the characters are in a celebratory mood, we're inclined to believe that Christy will get a happy ending away from the series.

In a major shakeup, CBS’ sitcom Mom is losing one of its two title characters. Anna Faris will not be returning to the series for its upcoming eighth season, leaving Allison Janney as the sole lead.
The move is surprising. Both Faris and Janney are in the middle of two-year contracts they signed in spring 2019 after lengthy negotiations. Their new deals secured a two-year renewal for the Chuck Lorre comedy through Season 8.
I hear Faris’ exit was finalized early into the show’s hiatus, and the writers have been writing the new season without her character, Christy. Her absence will be addressed in the upcoming season, which is slated to start production September 14 in Los Angeles.
“The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Farris said. “I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience.

There's no need to worry that Mom will be cancelled this time around. CBS has already renewed this Thursday night comedy series for an eighth season. If the ratings drop far enough this year, could it be cancelled anyway? Stay tuned.
A multi-camera sitcom, the Mom TV series stars Anna Faris, Allison Janney, Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner, Kristen Johnston.
