The man has a once-in-a-generation level of talent that he has been using to terrorize society since his first short story, “I Was a Teenage Grave Robber.” Since then, his writing catalog has grown quite a bit.

Known for his iconic role as Bubba in the Oscar-winning Forrest Gump, Williamson will next be seen in the Amazon feature Unstoppable, alongside Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez, produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. There’s a particular flavour of horror films that don’t often get a lot of appreciation, especially as so-called “elevated horror” dominates the screens and critics’ notebooks. These horrors aren’t necessarily what we’d call good in the most traditional sense, but they’re perfectly fine and most importantly, hugely accessible for everyone.

Which brings us to Salem’s Lot, Gary Dauberman’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 vampire novel. Dauberman’s version of Salem’s Lot is the first time the book has been adapted to the big screen, although a shortened version of the 1979 miniseries did enjoy a short stint in cinemas, as did a feature film sequel to the miniseries, A Return To Salem’s Lot.

Legendary author Stephen King’s vampire novel Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) has received three direct adaptations over the decades. The first was the 1979 mini-series directed by Tobe Hooper, which had a running time of 183 minutes. A mini-series directed by Mikael Salomon followed in 2004, and that one had a 181 minute running time. So when it was announced that Gary Dauberman was going to write and direct an adaptation that would try to fit the story into a single feature, fans wondered how Dauberman would accomplish that… and how long this single feature would be. Salem's Lot is widely regarded as one of Stephen King's best - and perhaps more importantly, most terrifying - novels, which is why the new adaptation currently streaming on Max simply didn't cut it for the majority of fans and critics.

The movie follows the basic premise, but does not flesh out the main characters enough and is seriously lacking in scares and gore (pretty much every kill takes place off-screen) despite the R rating. It also leaves out some major story elements, including Ben Mears' childhood connection to the Marsten House.

The long-awaited movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is now available to stream on Max, unleashing a stylish vampire outbreak without much in the way of story. It turns out that there was a much longer cut of the film that Dauberman ultimately trimmed down for a leaner runtime.

The filmmaker revealed in a recent interview with Den of Geek, “My first cut was about three hours. There’s a lot left out. My first draft of the script is 180-odd pages or something because you’re trying to include everything. And a lot of it has to do with a lot of the secondary characters and stuff that I spoke about. So it was sad to see that stuff go, but it’s like a necessary evil.”

Review: I need to get it right out of the way that I’m not the biggest fan of the original 1979 Tobe Hooper version of Salem’s Lot. The story is interesting but I find it to be a 3-hour slog with about 15 minutes of cool moments. So I was ecstatic to see it finally get the remake treatment. Or rather, I was glad to see the book adapted another time, to try and get it right (they tried again in 2004 with another so-so miniseries). This would have been the first big-screen adaptation of the novel, but it was delayed for years, with Warner Bros eventually cancelling its theatrical release in favour of streaming release on Max.

After a series of lengthy delays, Warner Bros. and New Line's remake (or re-adaptation) of Stephen King's Salem's Lot is now streaming on Max, and a first look at this latest take on the novel's head vampire, Kurt Barlow, has leaked online.

In the book, Barlow was described as a fairly ordinary-looking middle-aged man, but the character was reimagined as a bald, pale Nosferatu-inspired monster for Tobe Hooper's '70s miniseries. Then, in the 2004 adaptation, the late Rutger Hauer played an interpretation of the evil vampire that was a lot more faithful to the source material.

As you can see from the image below, this new Barlow takes at least some inspiration from the creature we met in the original miniseries - though this version is even more monstrous-looking.

At the heart of every cinematic re-adaptation is a question: Why? Gary Dauberman's Salem's Lot answers with a shrug, defined by disappointingly shallow storytelling and downgraded special effects. Tobe Hooper's 1979 miniseries isn't bulletproof, but neither is it as generic as Dauberman's take on Stephen King's northeastern vampire tale. It's not offensively terrible nor memorably inept, merely rudimentary in its vampiric lore and underwhelming compared to a billion other Count Dracula remixes we’ve endured over the decades. Dauberman's vanilla soft-serve of a King adaptation is begging for added flavors, hardly worth the wait as it crusted over in release-date purgatory.

Just when you thought it was safe to take out the trash, the Screambox Original horror-comedy Crackcoon landed on our streaming service and VOD platforms this past Tuesday.

Warner Bros. has been keeping writer/director Gary Dauberman‘s adaptation of the Stephen King novel Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) on the shelf for a long time – but they won’t be keeping it there for much longer. The movie, which was supposed to be given a theatrical release back in September of 2022, is now set to be released through the Max streaming service on October 3rd. During interviews with SFX magazine, Dauberman confessed that making this adaptation was more challenging than he expected it to be – and producer Michael Clear confirmed that there are elements that are purposely reminiscent of the Tobe Hooper-directed mini-series adaptation of King’s novel.

This is the third adaptation of Salem’s Lot. The previous two were both mini-series, which aired in 1979 and 2004. This new take on the concept is said to be set in 1975, the same year King’s novel was first published.

King packs his stories with rich character work and humanity, so much so that the 1979 and 2004 adaptations couldn’t condense 439 pages into any less than 181 minutes of runtime. Expectations were not very high after the film was pulled from its original theatrical debut and placed on the shelf for such a long time, but a lot of critics seem to have been won over by this new take on King's seminal vampire tale.

Gary Dauberman's "Salem's Lot" has had a bumpy ride. The Stephen King adaptation was originally supposed to hit theaters in 2022. Then it got delayed to 2023. Then it got pulled from the release calendar entirely. Since "Salem's Lot" is a Warner Bros. production, there was a growing fear that this vampire movie would go the way of WB's "Batgirl" and "Coyote vs. Acme" and never see the light of day. King got involved, taking to Twitter and pondering why the studio was sitting on the flick. "Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it's embarrassing, or anything," the master of horror said. Rumors eventually began to swirl that "Salem's Lot" might skip theaters entirely and go directly to WB's streaming service, Max. Sure enough, the studio finally announced that was the case: "Salem's Lot" is destined to stream on Max this October, just in time for Halloween season.

Revisiting an iconic work by Stephen King takes guts. It’s especially tough when the property has already been adapted by a fan-favorite director. Yet Salem’s Lot looks to do exactly that, reviving the vampire franchise for the first time in nearly twenty years. This time, the King property gets the feature film treatment, hoping to differentiate itself from the 1979 Tobe Hooper and 2004 Mikael Salomon mini-series events. While this Salem’s Lot looks great, the shorter runtime leaves it sprinting through the exposition. It becomes a problem despite moments of brilliance.

Exclusive: The Duffer Brothers‘ upcoming Netflix supernatural mystery The Boroughs, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, has added Jena Malone (Love Lies Bleeding), Carlos Miranda (Station 19), Seth Numrich (Under the Banner of Heaven) and Alice Kremelberg (The Sinner).

The long-delayed adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot is finally about to release, and we have a trailer to boot.

It’s been a long time coming but the Warner Bros adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 vampire horror novel Salem’s Lot is just around the corner. Filming completed on Salem’s Lot all the way back in November of 2021, but the film has been in a strange state of limbo ever since. In the intervening years, Warner Bros top brass has seemingly gone back and forth regarding the film’s fate as the studio has repeatedly shifted its strategy regarding theatrical releases.

Originally, the film was set for a streaming-only release on the studio’s Max platform. Then, as Warner Bros moved away from those plans and began to focus on projects that could be released theatrically, it also began to delete films so that it could claim back their production budgets as tax write-offs.

To the chagrin of many Stephen King fans, Salem’s Lot — the latest movie adaptation of the horror master’s 1975 bestseller — will bypass theaters and debut on Max.

So we’ll be deprived of the big screen experience, and non-subscribers will have a hard time accessing the film.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that early buzz about the project has been ecstatic, and a new trailer released today promises a suitably spine-tingling experience.

Over the familiar strains of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Sundown,” author Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) “returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire.”

After a number of lengthy delays, it was recently announced that Warner Bros. and New Line's re-adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot will debut on the Max streaming service on October 3rd, and the first trailer has finally been released online.

The teaser introduces writer Ben Mears (Thunderbolts* actor Lewis Pullman), as he returns to his childhood town of Jerusalem's Lot to do research for his new book. Ben soon realizes that the "haunted" house that traumatized him as a child has some new occupants, and they have sinister plans for The Lot.

Ben joins Susan Norton (Makenzie Leigh), Doctor Cody (Alfre Woodard), Mark Petrie (Jordan Preston Carter) and Father Callahan (John Benjamin Hickey) in an attempt to stop the evil Kurt Barlow before he consumes the entire town.

Lewis Pullman is ready to sink his teeth into defending his hometown in the trailer for Salem’s Lot, which adapts the classic Stephen King horror novel.

The trailer was released Thursday ahead of writer-director Gary Dauberman’s feature hitting Max on Oct. 3. Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Pilou Asbæk, Alfre Woodard and William Sadler round out the cast for the movie centering on writer Ben Mears (Pullman), who returns to his hometown and realizes he needs to defend it against a vampire.

“I’ve always written stories about things that are so terrible, you’ll run away until your brain won’t remember,” Pullman’s character says in the footage.

Later, Woodard warns, “This is not a disease you can catch.”

A new trailer, set against the backdrop of Gordon Light’s 1974 song “Sundown,” gives a peak of what happens when killer vampires descend on the sleepy Maine town of Jerusalem’s Lot.

This new adaptation of King’s novel – starring Lewis Pullman, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Pilou Asbæk, Alfre Woodard, and William Sadler – was written and directed Gary Dauberman, the co-writer on the 2017 adaptation of It and the 2018 sequel It Chapter Two.

When it comes to Stephen King adaptations, it really can go one of two ways. Sometimes you get a Stand By Me, The Shining, or The Shawshank Redemption; and other times you get a Pet Sematary (1989), a Dark Tower, or, well, another Pet Sematary (2019). And after numerous delays and scrapped theatrical release plans stateside, you could be forgiven for thinking that Gary Dauberman's upcoming take on King's vampire classic Salem's Lot — already well adapted before as a miniseries back in 1979 — is bound to be one of those other times. But if the atmospheric new trailer for the It Chapter One and Two writer's sophomore directorial effort is anything to go by, then we may actually have another King-worthy banger on our hands. Better late than never, right? The upcoming feature adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 horror novel, “Salem’s Lot,” has faced an uphill battle in its journey to the screen. In the works since 2020 and having been shot in 2022, it was originally set to be released theatrically in September of that year, but was pushed to April 2023. The warning signs should’ve been apparent then as Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, also set another horror property, “Evil Dead Rise,” for the same opening weekend. April 2023 came and went and “Salem’s Lot” was still being held back, but by October, in light of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes preventing new content from being made, WB were considering dropping the film on their streaming service Max. They decided not to in that moment, but by February 2024, backlash from fans and King himself seems to have reached a fever pitch.

The story follows Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman), a writer who returns to his hometown of Salem’s Lot in Maine to complete his novel, only to find that the town has been cursed with vampires. The trailer shows various residents of Salem’s Lot attempting to thwart attacks from vampires, end the mysterious curse, and make it out alive. The new adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 novel, considered by many to be one of the author’s very best, was shot in the summer of 2021 (with additional photography a year later). And then it just sat. For a while it was unclear whether Warner Bros. was just going to scrap the movie altogether, as it did with “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. Acme.” Eventually the movie was shifted to premiere on the company’s streaming platform Max.
