Opëshum's eighth sci-fi book, Beyond the Father, is the first book in the Gods on Trial series. It is part fantasy and part speculative science fiction, based on a planet named Xzyber, where people are divided into Mollards (robotic machines) and Non-mollards (humans).

As a reader, it has been hard to pick a side because both sides are chaotic, treacherous, and unethical. Well, it is a God on Trial series; there are Gods. However this book incorporated lots of information, but I still have many questions that I wanted the answers to, and that's why looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

The story is layered with a non-linear narrative, and Opëshum's writing will compel you to connect with the characters. Overall, this fast-paced book is a perfect recommendation if you enjoy reading an engaging mix of sci-fi, fantasy, and hypothetical conversations.

The Review

This was such a rich and captivating read. The author did an incredible job of building a unique and layered narrative with the equally layered mythos. The multiple POVs from such different characters and entities in this narrative allowed the reader to really get a sense of the struggles and power dynamics that this world held. The amount of detail and backstory the author poured into this story within such a short amount of pages was astounding, including the glossary of terms the author procured to make this world feel even more alive on the page.

Yet it was the beautiful fusion of sci-fi and fantasy along with the powerful themes of religion’s influence on politics, the improper balance of the class systems, and our place in the world as a whole that made this story really come alive. The varying arcs of each character allowed not only for this dynamic world to come alive, but to highlight the problems and emotional weight of each faction highlighted in this narrative. The blend of sci-fi tech and the alien world with the more epic elements of fantasy and mythology was great to see, but at the end of the day, the way the author highlighted how despite our class systems separating us, we are all individuals at our core, and each suffers from our own sources of distress and worries, was amazing to read.

The Verdict

Captivating, engaging, and thought-provoking, author Opëshum’s “Beyond the Father” is a fantastic first book in the gods on Trial series and a brilliant sci-fi and fantasy fusion. The twists and turns this narrative takes and the shocking twist ending will have readers clamoring for more, and the dynamic world the author has crafted leaves an incredible wealth of room for future installments in this series.

Readers of Beyond the Father will be swept away on an exciting adventure on the strange planet Xyber. Even though I'm not really into sci-fi, I was drawn into this well-developed world with a wide range of scenery. The story is set against systemic oppression, power struggles, and the looming threat of revolution. The carefully thought-out characters undergo significant changes that give the complicated genre more meaning.

The addition of a strange god is the most exciting element. Some conversations made the story's philosophical ideas more critical. Some of the story didn't grab me at first, but as I kept reading, I began to see the intricate web that was being woven. I learned to admire science fiction because of its vivid description of Xyber, well-rounded characters, and philosophical depth.

The genre wasn't one I was particularly interested in at first, but the hidden dangers and unexpected turns kept me reading, and I came to enjoy even the parts I didn't find so interesting. This book is perfect if you want an exciting tale that will make you think.

Opëshum Patroz's "Beyond the Father: Book 1" of the "Gods on Trial" series is a captivating science fiction and fantasy novel. The story is set on the planet Xżyber, which is divided into Mollards, who are robotic machines, and Non-mollards, who are humans. The world is in chaos, with a crumbling state, scarce resources, and conflicts between different factions.

The rich and complex narrative is what drew me in to this book. The author does an excellent job of weaving together multiple storylines and themes, such as power dynamics, class systems, and spiritual transcendence. The characters are also well-developed and relatable, and I enjoyed following their journeys and watching them evolve throughout the story.

Another thing that stood out to me was the blend of science fiction and fantasy elements in the book. The author does a great job of combining futuristic technology with mythical and epic elements to create a truly immersive and unique world.

In general, I would highly recommend "Beyond the Father: Book 1" to readers who are fans of science fiction and fantasy literature. It's a fast-paced, engaging read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I am excited to read the remaining books in the series and find out what happens next.

There is no denying the paradoxical nature of the fear of unknown—a thing that can evoke trepidation, yet simultaneously serve as a reservoir for opportunities and personal development. The acknowledgment that it is intimidating recognizes the inherent human tendency to feel uneasy when faced with ambiguity or situations lacking familiarity.

Yet, the pivotal insight lies in the recognition of the untapped potential residing within unexplored domains, and beyond the initial discomfort, the unknown offers a fertile ground for expanding one's horizons by venturing into uncharted territory, encountering novel insights, skills, and perspectives that contribute to their personal and intellectual development.

In the book, ‘Beyond the Father’ by Opëshum Patroz, we see how the author captivates readers with its well-crafted characters, intricate plot, and the promise of unraveling mysteries. This tale is not merely about a fantastical world but also delves into the complexities of family, secrets, and the pursuit of truth.

Right from the start, we are immersed in a richly detailed and tumultuous world within the Warget solar system, focusing on the smallest and most unstable planet, Xżyber. Initially, the narrative revolves around Anglid, a young Xżyberian prince, and unfolds on his eighteenth birthday, a day that promises to reveal his deepest desires.

Anglid, despite his father King Thio's discouragement boldly requests to visit the mysterious cell of the Fallen King and thus sets forth a beginning for all the mystery that is to be unfolded as the chapters go by and we come to know about hidden secrets that will leave deep effects.

Not only the main characters, but an array of other side characters, and their deference and respect for the royal family hint at underlying power dynamics, leaving readers intrigued about their role in the unfolding events.

The relationships are central to the story, and it takes an unexpected turn with the impending storm, creating a palpable sense of urgency. The story masterfully sets the scene, utilizing atmospheric elements to mirror the emotional turmoil within the castle. Hence I am going to give this book FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The story's multiple POVs, featuring diverse characters and entities, provide a profound understanding of the world's complexities. The attention to detail and the rich backstory are remarkable, with a glossary of terms that adds to the story's vibrancy.

I would love to first off say thanks to @opeshumpatroz and @travelling.pages.tours for the opportunity to read this book.

This book is fast-paced and full of many POV, while each POV is usually connected to one another. In this book each POV is about their journey in a world where there is so much chaos. You get to read about some great character development and each POV is full of such wonderful world-building. Each character is struggling with something, whether it be their emotions, lack of emotions, or deciding between right and wrong. The book takes you on a ride, just when you think that you have each character figured out it throws you for a loop and you are left with more questions than answers. If you enjoy a book that is engaging and full of sci-fi and multiple POV’s then I suggest reading this book. However, be prepared, because this is only one out of eight.

This is a gripping science fiction novel that keeps the readers on the edge of their seat. Set on the distant planet Xzyber, this novel paints a complex society where metal-reborn beings oppress their organic counterparts, and royalty uses religion as a tool for ruthless control. Author successfully provides a diverse arrey of perspectives from various characters and beings without confusing the readers.

I went into this book knowing that i would like it and I absolutely did! The multi-media format was such a unique way to tell a story. To be honest, I had no idea how the story would manage to include good plot and character development with such a unique format but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it actually worked really well! I was always questioning what was really going on or what was going to happen next! Overall, this was an amazing sci-fi and I will definitely be picking up Opeshum's other book as soon as I can.

Sci-fi fantasy thrills me but if the premise is short with a single-goal focus and few characters along with a troop of robots, well then I often didn’t sing in. Sci-fi has to be, for me, obscure and chaotic with its grand worlds and settings. I love that convoluted plot with multiple entries of characters with a heady mix of intentions and latent motives. Like a brooding philosopher, I enjoy sifting the long cast of characters. It’s a challenging to keep them all alive in mind, trying harder to picture them in their actions and intentions. In the end, it is like brain storming but worth the fun.
I got hunch for the similar craze in Opëshum Patroz’s newly introduced first book in Gods on Trial Series: Beyond the Father. It’s terrific. What a maze of exciting intricacies and intrigues? The storyline follows the chaotic crumbling state of the Xżyber planet.
The world there is in confusion of its existence, choices, king’s rule, uprising, scarce resources, invasion, and felony to god’s obligation. A strange fascination of life after death is catching up in the air. People are obsessed and preparing for their Mollard future. Basically, the planet is shared by Mollards and Non-Mollards. In short, try to understand, Mollards are like robots made of metal with emotions, on the other hand Non-Mollards are normal human beings, consuming teal oil for sustenance. But the division is ruthless and heartless.
Vangora Rima (VR) is a soul repository where a dead person can be installed like his previous existence. It was scientific community’s intent for Xżyberians to adopt an electronic version shortly after birth. And Non-Mollards have a different say in the matter.
This was one side of the story that arrested my attention. On the other hand, the novel is more to its semblance. A lot of detailed description flits by. There is commotion – and it interests me. From labourers to a long cast of military generals to giving birth in a normal circumstances to the dilemma of King Thio – the novel creates a whirlwind of emotions and situations to jolt you in and out in the story.
This was done deliberately to create a world that is heading towards commotion and confusion. There needs to be an arrival of someone who could steer them, save them from internal movements, attacks from boundaries, and unite them against the deadly violent storms.
Is I am the only one that enjoys obscure chaotic sci-fi? Yes, throughout the reading I was drowning in the waves of chills and thrills. With its well-developed elements of mystery, thrill and adventure, I enjoyed this rollercoaster journey.
Author’s contemplative narrative style makes it a compact read and for that the author used more than one POV’s. It gives the book another delectable touch.
It’s a page-turner, fully engrossing book, but I feel it’s a bit long which made me a bit exhausted to keep up with the story…but that’s my challenge. Long elaborations make the pace lean just a little bit toward the slower side. But the journey was really magical! I would definitely read the next part as soon as it is out.

Have you ever wanted to binge watch a tv show, but like..with words?
That's what Beyond the Father is like. I would liken it to the worldbuilding of The Expanse/Leviathan Wakes but without the boring earth politics, and a lot more accessible for the younger crowd.
I loved the discussion of faith and servitude- it's not heavy-handed, but it makes the point to be critical of oppressive religious regimes. My jaw dropped at Zakum's monologue about Plebony in the third 'act'.
The presentation of the Series is just...an excellent format for storytelling, and a great way to kick off a book series that leaves us hooked.

This is the first book of Opëshum's gods on Trial series, Beyond the Father. Author slowly built the narrative and characters with unique introduction into this new world.Different point of views of characters gave a perspective of struggles and power dynamics happening in this world. The description of new planet Xżyber with vivid details of nature , made it more vibrant.

What surprised me is the mix of two genres Sci-fi and fantasy mixed with mythology aspects. This is fast paced narrative , so I didn’t-find any difficulties while reading and get a grip on the characters. Each character is going through something whether be it emotional element or power struggle. Every reader will relate to their obsession with electronics, after life and reincarnations through Vangora Rima project.

The characters go though a significant changes with the flow in the story and that Arc made it more compelling to read
This genre isn’t what I normally pick , but the events and twists of this book made it exciting. At first I felt difficulty in continuing as the tale gradually picks up, if you get past that you’re in for a exhilarating ride.

Reality Check on Here-Before, Here-Now, and Here-After

BEYOND THE FATHER is the first installment (out of eight) in the ongoing gods on Trial: The Series, Volume 1, authored by Opëshum Patroz. This November 2022 extraterrestrial book has 313 pages, with 33 subtitled episodes.

The events take place in Xzyber, a small, habitable planet in the fictitious Warget Solar System. Its inhabitants, the Xzyberians, are faced with extreme weather patterns and are on the cusp of a full-blown cross-border war amid internal strife and tensions.

The book (and the series in general) is set in five tumultuous Xzyberian locations: the Sub-Median and associated clusters, Central Kingdom, The Western Territories, and the Independent Settlements regions; and a spiritual realm.

It shows the politico-economic and social disparities between two allied combat forces—the superior, hardy, and regenerating Mollards who are fighting alongside the so-called inferior, Teal oil-sustained non-Mollards. It challenges our polytheistic preferences, especially through its furious and scorned god Flexix who wants to annihilate his subjects for their immortality tendencies and inclination to restrictions god Plebomy—a disaster prevented by the wise counsel of Flexix’s self-created companion with whom they have a love-hate association.

It discusses the food chain-related ethical dilemmas, particularly the speaking and scavenging raptors’ fatal fallout while feasting on the undead Anglid’s remains. Virtually every reader will relate with the kingdom’s obsession with an electronic, metallic afterlife through its Vangora Rima project—a portal where fallen souls are uploaded/downloaded—that, unfortunately, contravenes the natural life cycle, as exemplified by the Elder’s confession about his self-preservation and reincarnation in the Memoirs episode.

Themes: aliens, subordination, military service and operations, survival, natural resource conflicts, harmony, empathy, ill-fated prince Anglid’s teenage rebellion, idealism, subjugation, theism, folk religion, damnation, morality, subservience, individualism, corporal punishment, personification, blasphemy, conscription, defiance, expansionism, uprising, caste system, redemption, divinity, eternity, paranoia, pseudoscientific research, repentance, search and rescue operations, and transgression.

BEYOND THE FATHER transcends its fantasy elements as this philosophical gem offers an uncomfortable reality check on the here-before, here-now, and here-after.

Beyond the Father marks the beginning of an enthralling eight-book odyssey known as gods on Trial: The Series. This narrative unfolds on the enigmatic planet Xżyber, segmented into distinct regions. The richly developed world immerses readers in a variety of landscapes. The storyline revolves around intricate characters who grapple with societal oppression, resource conflicts, and the ever-present specter of revolution. An eccentric deity observes and engages in thought-provoking dialogues, adding depth to the story's philosophical themes. With concealed threats and unforeseen twists, this meticulously crafted science fiction epic prompts readers to contemplate the transcendence of life's constraints. For aficionados of intricate science fiction and sweeping sagas, Beyond the Father is an absolute gem. I found myself captivated by this book and the entire universe it unveils within the series. The depiction of the planet Xżyber is vivid and detailed, transporting me to its diverse landscapes. The characters are exceptionally well-developed, each undergoing a profound transformation as they confront oppression, impending resource conflicts, and the underlying currents of revolution. However, what truly distinguishes this book for me is the introduction of the eccentric deity—a character that introduces a layer of depth and philosophy to the narrative. Their dialogues and occasional interventions bring a philosophical dimension that had me pondering life's profound questions. The narrative weaves a tale of intertwined struggles, with a concealed threat lurking in the background. I was consistently on edge, eager to uncover the mysteries of Xżyber.

Beyond the Father is more than just a book; it's an immersive journey into a meticulously crafted world that challenges your intellect and leaves you yearning for more. It's the kind of story that lingers in your thoughts long after you've closed its pages. If you seek a deep and captivating adventure, your search ends here. This book is essential reading for anyone in search of profound, thought-provoking science fiction.

Opeshum Patroz's novel takes us on an extraordinary journey through a sci-fi world that is as rich in storytelling as it is in imaginative detail. Set in the Sub-Median Region, we're introduced to a society where metallic beings hold power over their organic counterparts. This mix of metal and organic life forms the perfect backdrop for exploring themes of discrimination and social hierarchy. The story's setting is intriguing, especially in the Central Kingdom, where the blend of religion and royalty results in the oppression of the lower classes. This stark contrast sets the stage for a world that is both intricate and engaging. The author skillfully intertwines these two contrasting worlds, demonstrating a knack for creating a universe that is both thought-provoking and immersive. The plot thickens with looming threats of war and internal revolutions, adding to the suspense. A standout feature of the novel is the enigmatic, god-like creator and his philosophical interactions with a wiser companion. These discussions are not only well-crafted but also intellectually challenging, encouraging deep reflection on existential themes. At its heart, this book brilliantly depicts the struggle for survival and existence. The interwoven struggles of its characters create a narrative full of suspense and intrigue. What I particularly love about this book is its unpredictability. Just when you think you've grasped the story's direction, a twist completely changes the game, a characteristic that truly sets this book apart in the sci-fi genre.

Beyond the Father : Book 1 (gods on Trial: The Series), is a must-read for sci-fi enthusiasts and those who appreciate excellent world-building, complex character development, and thought-provoking themes. It's the kind of book that not only lays the groundwork for an epic series but also leaves you eagerly anticipating the next installment. I'm excited to see how this captivating universe continues to unfold in the series' subsequent books.

The reason I used the word 'astounding' is extacly how I feel about this book.
I walked through each page with a little doubt that will the author be able to deliver to the level of fantasy and sci-fi?! But Opeshum Patroz has left me all in the awe of this book and longing for the further series.
The way the story is set is what I adore the most. The characters were beautifully introduced through each chapter and life was added in each character through the writing style of the author. I felt like being each of the character while reading the book.
The book is set on a planet named Xyber and is mainly showing the dispute in two major groups, Mollards and Non-Mollards. Mollards are the computerized being while Non-Mollards are the ones who are more with humanly characteristics.
I loved the questioning and vigilant behaviour of Prince Anglid. The way his character was portayed gives determination and firmness.
That backing of Liara for her team was something that gave me chills and tears at the same time. I really loved the fact that the author has invested his time in thinking about such a powerful feminine energy.
Thio's story of becoming what he never dread for ofcourse have given tears to most of the readers.
But oh boyyy, let me talk about Felxix. He is a God and really acted like one. The about of satire and sass he has!! Give me all of that and I am here for more of it. It was a treat for my eyes and brain.
It was a book but more of the visual pleasure because the way Opeshum wrote every character didn't helped me for visualizing each and every one them.
Happy to see such form of literature and unsatiated by just the start was to gulp all of the series soon.
By reading this book we can only think what computerization can do to the world and we should all be ready to be ruled by the machines one day in coming future.
Although I question a bit the risky step taken by the author to write the book in the way its written. Overall a huge treat with a very brave writing style.

The novel takes readers on an engrossing journey through the complicated and imaginative world of Xżyber, a planet split along ideological and technological lines. This novel, the first of the eight-book "Gods on Trial" series, weaves science fiction, fantasy, and philosophical investigation together to create the framework for an epic story.

Four separate regions, each reflecting a different level of technology and cultural civilization, split the land. The story is driven by this innate social antagonism, which serves as the backdrop for the main themes of oppression, rebellion, and the quest for independence.

Each of the many characters that Patroz presents is trying to figure out where they fit into this stratified world. The narrative progresses because of these people's inner conflicts and motivations. It's challenging to simply label them as heroes or villains because of the author's deft exploration of their psyches, which highlights their moral complexity.

"Beyond the Father" is difficult to define. the combination of magical elements with future technology. The reader is kept interested and motivated to read more by the narrative's smooth transitions between action-packed scenes and contemplative, philosophical moments.

The world-building and character development in the book are excellent, although there are certain parts that might use more work. There are moments when the pacing feels a little off, with some passages feeling a little hurried and others lingering on information that may be omitted.

A compelling and thought-provoking book, it makes the reader want to read more. The foundation for a potential epic series was laid by the author, who created an engrossing universe and memorable characters. This book is worth reading whether you're a fantasy buff, sci-fi fanatic, or just someone who appreciates a well-written novel with philosophical depth.

Beyond the Father
By Opëshum Petroz

A review by Michael DeStefano

Opëshum’s maiden literary offering, Beyond the Father, is the opening salvo in a fascinating new series, Gods on Trial. The author sets the standard for meticulous alien world building through the use of familiar themes (war, caste politics, metaphysical religions, naming conventions), and an intense imagination for colorful and unique characters. She also employs both a comprehensive map describing the geographic surroundings that is the world of Xżyber and a detailed glossary so that the reader may settle into the story early without being confused as to the meanings of unfamiliar words or phrases.

Xżyber comes alive from the outset, sharing a glimpse of each major character through the first introductory “episodes” defining their use of formal language, specific circumstances and national as well as individual motivations. Her characters showed a wide array of emotions, yet never felt compelled to use profanity or graphic allusions to romantic entanglements (not that there were many scenes that depicted such action). Perhaps, the author plans for Anglid to find his love interest in a successive edition of the series.

Opëshum deftly handles the multifaceted plot, which is quite obviously an alien metaphor that describes religious, racial, and, organic v android bigotry in a most creative and relatable way. I found the read quite refreshing and quick. Turning the last page made me wish I took all “season” to read this book.

Remember the name, Opëshum Petroz, for this Sci-Fi author and Readers’ Favorite Finalist is one to look out for.

An extraordinary book full of an exquisite storytelling

The author demonstrates remarkable skill in crafting characters that are not only vividly imaginative but also imbued with a palpable sense of authenticity, effectively bringing them to life within the pages of the novel. Patroz employs a distinctive storytelling method, initiating each chapter with the perspective of a new character. This narrative approach offers readers a comprehensive insight into the multifaceted inhabitants of Xżyber, enabling a deeper exploration of their inner workings and emotional complexities. Among the standout characters is Flexix, whose intricacy may compel readers to revisit certain passages to fully comprehend his role and interactions. Without a doubt, this book for me has one of the best narratives and character development, a great example of this is Osiem who we know from the beginning to be ruthless and even cold, but the author allows us to know him then from other facets and the same thing happens with the other characters, you can get to know them from many points of view and that makes everything more complex, because you enter into conflict as a reader, you do not know if you love them or hate them, or if you feel sorry or compassion for them. this book has nuances of all kinds, it has fantasy, fiction, elements that take your imagination to another level, this book reminded me at times of marvel movies. This book is astonishingly evocative. It immerses you in a whirlwind of emotions, presents various perspectives, and elicits a range of feelings. It's both bewildering and captivating, ultimately leaving you speechless.

Opëshum Patroz, for his epic sci-fi Beyond the Father, has created a whole new universe with an earth-like planet called Xżyber, full of interesting people and big problems. Though there are several differences, a day spans only ten Earth hours, the year consists of just two seasons, and some people are made of metal, like robots, and they have power over regular people. With its intricate societal stratification, the celestial realm pulsates with life, sparking a symphony of ambition and unrest.

The special thing about this book is how it makes you think. It asks big questions about life and faith. It's like looking at a beautiful painting with lots of hidden meanings. Characters such as King Thio and Queen Evaline come to life; their emotions and decisions are relatable, making them feel like real people you can understand. Other characters, like Anya and Anglid, are like friends you want to learn more about. What's cool is how it mixes high-tech stuff with deep mysteries. Imagine futuristic gadgets and magical secrets all in one place.

Sometimes, the story might feel a bit slow, like a gentle stroll instead of a wild race. But this helps you soak up the rich world the author created. And the best part? There are more books to come, promising even bigger adventures.

This book is the first installment, and it is a trip to another universe and a chance to think about our lives. Patroz's writing is like a magic spell, taking you to places you've never been. If you enjoy thought-provoking stories, this book is a must-read. It's an adventure you will remember.

Exploring the pages of this book was a remarkable journey. Opeshum Petroz has ingeniously pieced together a world that is detailed and layered, showcasing a variety of perspectives from a range of unique characters and entities. The reader gets an immersive view into the intricate challenges and power plays within this fantastically crafted universe. What struck me most was the rich detail and background packed into this book, along with an extensive glossary that adds a layer of depth and realism. The way the author merges elements of science fiction and fantasy, supported by deep themes like the interplay between religion and politics, the disparity in social class is particularly noteworthy. Every character's story adds color and depth to this dynamic world, shedding light on the emotional journeys and obstacles of various groups. I was enchanted by the blend of advanced technology and otherworldly settings with the epic scale of fantasy and myth. The book's unpredictable nature keeps you on your toes, especially with important figures such as King Thio, Liara, and Anglid make the reader continually speculate about the fate of these characters.

Whether you're a fan of immersive storytelling, complex characters, or thought-provoking themes, this book has it all. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a novel that's not just a journey through an imaginative universe but also a profound exploration of the human (and beyond human) experience. Opeshum Petroz has indeed created a work that will resonate with a wide range of readers and leave a lasting impression.

Great novel

Opeshum Patroz masterfully crafts an otherworldly experience in this novel, infusing it with a palpable sense of uniqueness and strangeness that sets it apart from typical real-world narratives. Patroz's creativity shines through in the construction of an intriguing, peculiar world that serves as the perfect backdrop for a tapestry of complex conflicts. These conflicts not only drive the story forward but promise a rich exploration in subsequent books. The characters in this book are brilliantly unique, mirroring the originality of the world they inhabit. What impresses me most is how these non-human characters vividly bring to life themes and reflections deeply relevant to our real-world experiences. Although navigating this new world can initially be confusing, I advise readers to pace themselves to fully grasp its intricacies—though the sheer excitement of the plot can make this a challenging feat! From the start, this story utterly captivated me with its blend of unexpected and imaginative elements, evoking a sense of wonder and enchantment. This novel reminds me of the awe-inspiring complexity found in 'The Matrix,' with its layered themes of oppression, rebellion, survival, and the fight against formidable forces. Patroz has woven a narrative that is not only enthralling but thought-provoking, and I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series to delve deeper into this fascinating story.

I had so many thoughts reading this book. Set in the country of Xzyber, the story follows several characters as they navigate a world overcome with political strife, conflicting religious views, and personal tensions.

The primary focus of this book is split between the people of Central Kingdom, who follow the Plebonian faith, and the Mollards/non-Millard’s who have adapted a unique form of afterlife that oppresses those who choose to remain organic.

Beyond the Father reads in a very philosophical way, and there were times I did have to read chapters twice to make sure I knew what the character’s intentions were. I also found myself wishing there was more of it and I understood the motivations of characters a little more. As this is going to be an 8 book series, this book set the stage for many characters and their intertwining stories, but we did not get to see the way these stories will connect.

My favourite part of the book though, was the thought behind the world itself. Opeshum considered every detail, from money to time, and wrote a glossary through which to better understand the intricacies of the nation our characters were apart of.

Overall, this was a really unique and insightful sci-fi novel with elements of philosophical undertones. Definitely a series to keep an eye on if you’re a fan of a unique sci-fi and fantasy blend

I liked that several artifacts which would have been usually considered to be non-human have been given a voice and a human-like sense of understanding in the author's world. The kind of introspection brought about when such non-human elements raise questions, is amazing.

There is a glossary of concepts given at the end, coupled with a map. Neither of the two are strictly necessary to be read and understood in advance in order to figure out what is going on in the story. Although of course, it would have been better if these were inserted in the beginning, before the story begins.

There is a lot of parallel storytelling involved. Keeping track of each of the characters and their concerns can often become overwhelming. Even though there is a sense of closure felt at the end, the parallel storytelling has many open ends which would serve as good prompts for further books in the series.

As the story progresses, the chapters generally become longer. There are some surprising twists in the story and the build-up to the climax in the latter parts of the book is good and creates a good amount of anticipation. Flaws in most of the characters have been drawn out very well. I would have liked it better if some of the chapters involving parallel storytelling were removed, where the characters involved seem to have no bearing on the climax in any way.

Patroz demonstrates exceptional skill in character development, employing a multi-perspective storytelling technique that enriches the narrative. This method allows for a detailed exploration of a world facing the challenges of resource scarcity and looming conflicts, engaging readers with thought-provoking moral quandaries and deep insights into human nature. The interplay of diverse character arcs adds a dynamic element to the story, enhancing the suspense and drawing readers into an experience akin to a thrilling roller coaster ride.
As the plot unfolds, Patroz masterfully reveals character details, skillfully maintaining intrigue and leaving readers eager for more. A notable example is King Thio, a complex figure whose internal struggles and relationships are gradually uncovered. His interactions with his son Anglid, marked by a path of personal choice and past regrets, add depth to their characters. Similarly, the evolving dynamics between Thio and Queen Evaline reveal layers of secrets and intricacies in their relationship. These characters represent just a glimpse of the broader cast that enriches the narrative, inviting readers to immerse themselves further in the series.
The story captivates with its blend of personal narratives and broader themes, making it an engaging read for those who appreciate detailed character studies set against a backdrop of a richly imagined world.

Dear Bookstagrammers,

Trust you are well and in good health!

Another book review is here and this time, I am reviewing a book that is a blend of contemporary sci-fi and fantasy. It is a book that I highly recommend for a mature audience with extraterrestrial enthusiasm. Beyond the Father by author Opëshum Patroz is the first book from an 8-book series that delves into the transcendent and that the unexpected is something that one must experience. The review is spoiler-free and my honest opinion.

The story happens on the smallest planet in the Warget Solar System called Xżyber. It is a place that is filled with fascination, inhabited by humans and robots; the Mollards and non-mollards. These two groups that function differently due to emotions are always at war and both of them have different dynamics on how to function. War was coming and despite the struggles and distractions, Prince Anglid wanted to seek the unexplored Area X, an area that with it comes questionable power and terror. The rest is a mystery.

For those who are interested in science fiction, I think this book is a good one since it delves into this world of transcendence. It is interesting to explore how can robots and humans live together and how this enigmatic world is consistently on edge when you mix these two together. The book is heavily packed with side stories that make the adventure captivating from one end to another although some might find this a little bit distracting. There are no breaks in it just a story that is fast-paced and engaging. Sometimes also philosophical in the sense that when you delve beneath the surface of the book, you can explore some questions of morality that a mature audience will surely find pleasure in. Well done to the author and thanks for the opportunity to review it.

This is the inaugural book in Opëshum Patroz's 'Gods on Trial' series, embarks on an enthralling journey within the vibrant yet tumultuous planet Xżyber. Set against a backdrop of geographical divisions and species conflict, the novel introduces Mollards and non-Mollards, highlighting their intricate differences and shared coexistence.

Patroz's world-building shines through a detailed Xżyber glossary, an essential guide for a storyline that lays the groundwork for subsequent installments. The narrative delves into societal tensions, political upheaval, and a looming threat of invasion, captivating readers with multifaceted characters like King Thio and Queen Evaline.

The exploration of faith and the gods' role amidst chaos adds depth to the narrative, offering philosophical musings on life's complexities. The multiple perspectives interwoven with a controlled pace maintain intrigue while promising a rich, evolving storyline.

This one is an intriguing, philosophically nuanced sci-fi fantasy, laying a strong foundation for an epic saga that readers will eagerly anticipate.

A sci-fi/fantasy adventure that readers will instantly deeply connect to. I admit that the names of the planets and figuring out the setting were confusing and frustrating at times, but when it came to showcasing the story and the start of Prince Anglid’s vision quest, you couldn't imagine the excitement of being along for the ride. I applaud the author’s use of imagery in this novel; the book is engaging, captivating, and exciting. I'm also glad this is book one of the gods on trial series. I'm fully waiting in much anticipation to see how the quest proceeds.

Beyond the Father by Opeshum Patroz is a book for those with a love for adventure, fantasy, and compelling characters. Other than trying to pronounce the names of the planets, there was nothing else I disliked about the book. The author has a keen writing style that's strongly compelling. The book is well-edited and well-written. For these reasons, I am giving this book a 4 star rating.

This story is an exceptional entry into the realm of science fiction. I was captivated from the turn of the first page as readers are introduced to  Anglid, the young heir to the throne of Xzyber. Patroz's writing is a complex tapestry that masterfully intertwines multifaceted characters, each with their own secret motives, against a backdrop of intricate political dynamics. The protagonist, Anglid, is refreshingly unique. He's a typical teenager grappling with identity and independence, yet his journey is anything but ordinary. His quest for self-discovery and truth leads him down a perilous path that threatens his kingdom. Patroz brilliantly showcases Anglid's struggle, as he questions his faith and inspires others to do the same, offering a relatable figure for many readers.

I found myself deeply engrossed in Anglid's story and the broader narrative of Beyond the Father. The complexity of the characters, especially Anglid, makes me eagerly anticipate the next installment in the series. Patroz has crafted a world that is not only immersive but also reflective, making this book a standout in the science fiction genre.

When you look past the war and political intrigues, this book serves as a perfect coming of age story for the main character, Anglid. From the first page where he celebrates his 18th birthday, we see Anglid struggle to gain true independence from his family, who ask that he requests for anything he wants, but deny his birthday requests for being “silly”. We then watch him go on a journey through the kingdom, quite literally claiming his manhood for himself. His character and backstory are endearing, allowing readers to quickly fall in love and easily root for him. We want to know more about his trials and whether or not he ultimately succeeds. This keeps us turning the pages indefinitely.

I would recommend this to fantasy lovers, action lovers, and fans of the young adult genre.

Beyond the Father Book 1 was a pleasant surprise to read. The story is well told, and I loved the dialogue between the characters. One thing that might seem small but is big to me is the character names. Many sci-fi books use names that are too strange and can detract from the story, but the ones in this book don’t do that. They seem to fit the characters and are different without being too distracting. The story feels very big, along the lines of some greats, like Star Wars, so there are times when you need to slow down and think about the story, but it never gets boring with a lot of setup. I definitely would read more.

I recommend it to anyone who likes a great sci-fi story.
