The Kings #2

Single Dad Dilemma

Rate this book
A gruff, divorced NFL coach meets his match in an equally grumpy, commitment-phobic neighbor in this warm-hearted and witty romance about family, second chances, and overcoming the past.

You’d think it was the perfect living next door to the grumpy single dad who needs my help with his troublemaking kids—just until football season is over. Swoony stuff, right?

You know who’s not swooning? Me.

I’m as grumpy as he is, and I’m fairly certain that for NFL Coach Barrett King, it was hate at first sight. It’s nothing I’ll lose sleep over because 1) the feeling is mutual, and 2) I’m not a people person. Just me and my dog, Larry, moving around when the mood strikes, is what I prefer.

Except I start getting attached. First to the kids. Then to their father. I don’t know why. He’s overbearing. His attempts at flirting are just growls and glares. But if I ever see that man smile…well, I might tear all his clothes off.

I don’t do forever. And Barrett—serious, thoughtful, sexier than he has any right to be—doesn’t do short term. We’re headed straight for disaster.

But it we're willing to take a risk, maybe this story won't end in heartbreak. Maybe what started as the perfect setup for two imperfect people just might end in love.

”When things are good enough, important enough,” he held my eyes unflinchingly, “when we love them enough, we take the risk, because we damn well know the reward is worth it.”

i love Karla Sorensen’s prose, her dexterity in making me laugh one moment and shed uncontrollable tears the next is unmatched. Single Dad Dilemma was no exception.

it follows a single dad, Barrett, who’s been through a lot, NFL coach, serious, reserved, and carrying more than he lets on. he’s also a father of two menaces, especially with their nannies. but when they meet Lily, the woman temporarily surveying their neighbor’s house, something shifts. they instantly have a soft spot for her, and i loved watching that bond grow.

the story beautifully orbits around Lily’s connection with the kids, and eventually, she becomes their nanny. the warmth between them felt so genuine. but the tension with the dad? absolutely palpable.. a veritable page-turner.

in addition, it was deeply emotional. between his past (his ex-wife, his twin brother) and Lily’s history ( the heartbreaking lore behind her dog, her family & nomadic lifestyle) everything felt so layered and human.

im counting this novel on my top 5 Karla Sorensen podium. she writes family, grief, and love with so much tenderness. a perfect mix of humor, heart, and healing for anyone craving a story that’ll make you laugh, cry, and fall in love all at once.

many thanks to the author for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review

I’m reminded once again why it’s a good thing to try new-to-me authors because Single Dad Dilemma was an absolute gem! The blurb snagged me right away and is the reason I gave this a chance. I love the single dad trope. I love the grumpy H trope and to top it off, the heroine is grumpy as well. It sounded like a fun read to me. Imagine my surprise when the heroine’s dog turned out to be grumpy too. It all worked! All the interaction between characters had me riveted. And the kids… I loved the kids. I rooted for this family so hard. Even more so when I started to learn there was something tragic in Lily’s past. This book brought out so many emotions. I laughed. I cried. I felt contentment. I cried some more…a scene almost wrecked me only due to recently going through what Lily went through. I got angry on the kids behalf. Even though you never meet their mom, you want to smack her upside the head for not cherishing what she had in those kids. And most of all, I felt the magic. I needed this book. It reminded me why I love to read and why I keep striving to find more books just like this one.

A cute single dad romance. I really enjoyed the banter and chemistry between Lily and Barrett. Also his kids Bryce and Maggie were amazing. Their friendship with Lily was so special and pulled on my heart strings.
It was definitely a light romance but with serious undertones when it came to Lily which I liked. Barrett and Lily’s romance is a slow burn but thanks to the great tension it worked.
I will say the last 10% felt rushed and gave off more telling instead of showing which was a shame cause I really needed more wooing and dating from the couple.
Still a really good romance that made me smile.

Thank you Montlake and Netgalley for the ARC. The thoughts are my own.

This book had me grinning from the very first chapter. The main characters’ banter? Absolutely top-tier. Witty, sharp, and downright addictive—it’s the kind of dialogue that makes you want to highlight every line.

The slow burn here is painfully slow in the best way possible—so much tension, and oh so worth the wait. Karla Sorensen’s writing is engaging, funny, and effortlessly charming. This was my first book by her, but it definitely won’t be my last!

A couple of minor things: After all that glorious build-up, things moved a bit too fast post-burn. And if I read one more lines out a character turning pink from embarrassment, I was about to start blushing on their behalf.

Huge thanks to NetGalley, Karla Sorensen, and Montlake Publishing for the ARC. If you love swoony slow burns, sharp humor, and characters with sparkling chemistry, add this to your TBR immediately

Woohoo — this one hit all the marks! I’m a big, big fan of the single-parent trope, so I was already excited, but the moment I realized this was a grumpy/grumpy couple, I was completely sold. I love that dynamic so much, and honestly, I wish there were more books like this out there.

I loved the gruffy hero and the spunky but equally grumpy heroine - their banter, chemistry, and attraction were all spot-on. The slow burn was fantastic: romantic in that yearning, ache-in-your-chest kind of way, with tension woven into so many scenes. Beautifully done by the author.

The kids were absolutely adorable (I could totally see a future book about the daughter — I’d be there cheering her on!). I really enjoyed this story — truly loved it! I might even grab a paperback copy… though the cover desperately needs an upgrade. This book deserves a snowy or even Christmas-themed cover; it would fit the vibe perfectly.

The ending wrapped everything up wonderfully, and now that I’ve met this family, I’ll definitely be going back to read the brother’s book next.

As always, a cute romance with a very slow burn. Lots of fantastic funny banter, tension and a fair share of angst.
Sorensen's writing is perfect with good plot execution and character depth. And Lilly's story is heartbreaking 💔
The pace is good. Soreness keeps the story moving forward at a good pace. The children of Barrett, especially Maggie, are adorable.
I'd love a book for Maggie's story as a young adult.

An absolute top read of 2025! Barrett and Lily seem so different on paper, but were perfect for each other! They both needed a safe haven and a place/person they could be vulnerable with. These were two grumpy people who make each other smile like the sun, and there's nothing better than watching two people find home in each other.

Given the tragedy Lily has been through, it was beautiful watching her open her heart to Barrett and his kids. His kids were hilarious, and their bond with both Lily and Barrett warmed my soul.

Karla's writing continues to be a source of comfort for me. The build-up in chemistry and intimacy between her characters makes you truly feel like you know them intimately by the end of the book. Her books are always top tier, and it's not a shock that this ended up on my top reads list!

What to Expect: grumpy/grumpy, single dad/troublemaker kids, neighbors, NFL coach, enemies to lovers, slow burn

Trigger Warnings: grief, death of loved ones

5 stars of Karla Sorensen perfection.

I just have to say, only Karla would break my heart over a character named LARRY.

Thank you so much to Montlake for the eARC via NetGalley! These are my honest thoughts.

I've been WAITING for Single Dad Dilemma since we got Lessons in Heartbreak. This is the story of a twin brother, named Barrett, who is a NFL head coach in Buffalo, NY, raising his wickedly sweet and smart preteens all by himself. His children are too smart for their good, chasing away nannies and housekeepers left and right, even flying to visit their Uncle Griffin and his girlfriend Ruby in Colorado, without so much as asking for permission.

Lily moves in next door to house sit for a couple who are wintering in the sun. Lily's dog, Larry, is a grumpy ol' dude, and she happens to meet Maggie and Bryce in the backyard. They are instantly smitten with both Larry and Lily, who is a little bit lonely and begrudging-lovingly invites them inside (with permission from the "nanny"/housekeeper).

When their current caretaker quits, Maggie and Bryce put together a slideshow presentation advocating for Lily to be their new person, and that gives Barrett King no choice but to at least ask her.

This tenuous relationship blossoms from the cracks in concrete. This is a struggle of wills, on both sides. The longer they hold out, the more the tension intensifies. This is a SLOW BURN story of self control and letting someone know you deeply, not quickly.

Lily's past is... sad. She's lonely. She's got Larry. FREAKING LARRY. And the belongings in the car she moves from place to place. Never setting down any permanent roots.

Until two kids and a grumpy dad make her want something more than this life she's been on the run from, since before her life absolutely fell into tattered pieces at her feet.

Karla Sorensen writes these raw characters, and then puts them in a sports romance. And I eat it up every single time. But this time, I just wanted them to KISS ALREADY. I also wanted them to hug, and spend Christmas together, and for Barrett to EAT THE DANG COOKIES. I wanted Maggie to know that exactly who is she, it's enough. And for Bryce to know that being shy doesn't mean you aren't strong. Single Dad Dilemma is a story of tender moments that make us who we are, and it perfectly captures the ways in which the choices we make are important to the stepping stones that eventually lead somewhere extraordinary. And sometimes, the choices that give us pause, that make us think, that challenge our boundaries, those are the important choices, the ones that will shift us in a new direction, and even if the road is hard, the journey is worth it.

5 stars. Always 5 stars for the single dad, the sweet children whom he loves with his whole being, and the temporary neighbor next door.

Read if you love:
- Sports romance
- (Sorta) Single dad x nanny
- Forced proximity
- Grumpy/grumpy
- Neighbors to lovers
- Slow burn
- Secret tattoos
- Grumpy old dogs (emphasis on *old*)
- Meddling preteens

AUDIO: Back to add... I was in TEARS listening to this audiobook. The slow burn and all the feelings were so powerful on audio! Aiden Snow as Barrett was FREAKING PERFECTION and CJ Bloom brought the sassy snark of Lily to LIFE. I listened to this so fast, I was hooked from the very beginning. This one should absolutely be on your radar to read OR LISTEN when it comes out on November 18th!

⭐⭐⭐✨ 3.5 stars

I came for the grumpy single dad with biceps and a golden retriever. I stayed for the tiny chaos gremlin named Maggie. I left feeling... sort of lukewarm about the actual romance.

Barrett and Lily's banter hits different. It's sharp, it's witty, it's the kind of verbal sparring that makes you remember why you liked them in the first place. And the kids, especially Maggie, our tiny chaos gremlin.....they genuinely feel like real humans, not just plot devices. Same with Larry the dog. That grumpy golden retriever has more personality than some protagonists I've read, which is both hilarious and kind of damning.

Lily's character arc is genuinely heartbreaking once you find out why she's been drifting for a decade. The slow reveal of her trauma, piece by tattoo, felt earned. And watching her thaw around the kids? Chef's kiss. That bonding actually made me feel something.

Where it lost me:

But here's the thing....and I hate to be that person...the chemistry between Lily and Barrett never quite sizzles. It's like watching two people who desperately want to combust but keep throwing buckets of water on themselves. The slow burn is fine, I get slow burns, but this felt less like romantic tension and more like I was watching them take forever to admit the obvious while I'm sitting there with my coffee getting cold.

The pacing also feels a bit... stuck? Like the story knows exactly where it's going but keeps hitting the brakes. By the halfway point, I was more invested in Maggie's schemes than in whether they'd actually get together.

If you're absolutely ravenous for grumpy-meets-grumpier found family chaos with a side of sports romance, this is your book. The writing is solid, the emotional beats are there, and there's genuine warmth underneath all the gruffness. It's just... not the powerhouse romance I wanted it to be. It's cozy. It's sweet. It's safe.

And sometimes safe just hits different.

Would I recommend? Yeah, if you're in the mood for something warm and character-driven rather than a page-turner. But if you need spark, you might want to shop around.

Thank you Montlake and Netgalley for the digital arc!!

Kitabı sevdim. Sadece konuyu işleme aşamalarından emin değilim.
Evet tanıştıktan kısa süre sonra etkilenmeler mevcut. Ama hemen birbirlerinin üzerine atlayıp, alev ateş yanmadılar. Hatta o kısımlar çoooook sonra geliyor. Bir an hiç gelmeyecek diye düşündürecek kadar geç. 😂😇

Mini Review: I have a new favorite trope - it’s called grumpy x grumpy.

“This decent into madness was meant to be savored.”

Review Title & Vibes:
{MY DILEMMA IS NOT BEING ABLE TO READ THIS STORY AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME}
I expected greatness, and this book delivered. Barrett and Lily have the best grumpy x grumpy vibes with stubbornness in spades. But with a little grumpy dog magic and two meddling pre-teens - their love story began!

Things I Loved:
-the slow burn - the anticipation nearly killed me - it was delicious. The wait was WORTH IT.
-Maggie and Brice (Barrett’s kids) have my whole heart - always needing an outlet for their (evil) genius tendencies, craving connection, but confident in their father’s love. YOU WILL TEAR UP
-the backstories were paced perfectly - uncovering insecurities and finding healing throughout the timeline.
-Barrett’s consistent thoughtful care of his kids and eventually of Lily. His patience and unwavering support had me swooning.
-Lily’s fierce personality and protectiveness over Maggie and Brice. Her character growth as she learns to let love in - bittersweet.
-Side character perfection - Barrett’s parents, Griffin and Ruby (from book 1), the team dynamics and front office staff (I’m sensing a potential spin off)

Audio Notes:
{dual} Aiden and CJ were wonderful. Barrett’s grumpy stoicism was delivered with precision. Lily’s prickly nature and feisty attitude was on point. I did have a few moments when the volume needed to be adjusted to better understand conversation, but those moments just made me tune in better. I would highly recommend this audiobook.

Single Dad Dilemma gives me the same warm buzz as my favourite Karla book, The Best Of All. Karla nails that blend of sharp banter, sweet kid moments, a delicious slow burn, and characters who grow in the most satisfying ways.

Lily has spent ten years drifting from place to place with her elderly dog. This winter in Buffalo changes her rhythm. Living next door to Barrett, a busy NFL coach juggling two kids, has her rethinking everything. For the first time, she wonders what it might feel like to stay, to let down her walls, and to face the past she has been dodging for far too long.

Barrett and Lily are similar in all the ways that matter, but also wonderfully different. They are both grumpy and guarded. Barrett is a perfectionist who thrives on routine (his life is literally scheduled in 15-minute increments 😅), while Lily lives in a state of beautiful chaos.

The contrast makes their connection spark in every scene. Their banter is quick and clever, and the emotional moments hit even harder when Lily slowly shares the truth about her past, piece by piece and tattoo by tattoo. If you love a slow burn, this one is irresistible. I inhaled it.

Lily also forms the sweetest relationships with Maggie and Bryce (especially our sassy queen Maggie). With their mother out of the picture and no other woman drama, Lily naturally steps into a steady, nurturing role without even realizing it.

The audio is an absolute treat. Aiden is everything you want in a grumpy single dad voice, and CJ Bloom continues to be unmatched at handling banter, softness, and those vulnerable, heart-wrenching moments. The two of them together are perfection.

I laughed, I teared up, I swooned, and I had the best time listening to Single Dad Dilemma.

Thanks so much to Karla for the early copies 💖.

Karla Sorensen has crafted something special with Single Dad Dilemma—a romance that refuses to choose between levity and depth, delivering both in equal measure. Her writing possesses a rare quality: the ability to shift seamlessly from moments of genuine humor to scenes that strike straight at the heart.

What makes this story special is its emotional authenticity. MMC Barratt carries complicated baggage from his divorce and a strained relationship with his twin Griffin (the MMC in Lessons in Heartbreak, which I also loved with my whole heart), while FMC Lily brings her own wounds, including a poignant and heartbreaking history connected to her canine companion Larry and grounded in a lonely, rootless existence.

This story is about family bonds, processing loss, and the courage it takes to open yourself to connection again. There's a gentleness in Karla’s approach to these heavier subjects that just speaks directly to my heart. She lets us sit with difficult emotions while still providing moments of lightness that are so needed and appreciated.

This one is a delicious slow burn (like 80% slow) and it’s all the better for it. Nothing was rushed and everything was so so good when things finally popped off and the tension broke.

This story has substance, humor and genuine emotional impact — it delivers on all fronts. It's the kind of story that stays with you, reminding you why we turn to romance in the first place: for the promise of healing, connection, and well-deserved happiness.

🎧The audio performances on this one were compelling and heartfelt and I enjoyed listened to the story so much. Can’t recommend the audio or the book more.

I knew that Karla Sorensen was cooking up something fantastic for Barrett ever since he appeared in Lessons in Heartbreak. The gruff, can-afford-no-distractions, always-in-control NFL coach who has his days planned in fifteen-minute increments? Oh, the fall was going to be delicious!
As with every Sorensen book, I found myself immersed in Barrett and Lily's story. Lily was not a people-person, and has never stayed in one place for long, but all of that is threatened when she starts falling for the family next door. I loved Lily and Barrett - the tension was ratcheting up with every interaction, and it all paid off with a scrumptious slow-burn.
It was so easy to fall for the kids as well - Bryce and Maggie were sweethearts (also scary sometimes), and I think that all of them healed something in each other 💕.
This book made me swoon, tear up, root for all the characters, and relish every moment of their journey to happiness! Add to your TBRs!

In the beginning, I loved Lily and Barrett!
Actually, I still love them!
This story just kinda dragged on for me and I found myself skipping whole chapters at a time around the 36% part of the story. It did not keep my interest unfortunately which is why I’m rating it with three stars….

Larry is an awesome grumpy introverted dog who hates the outdoors, but somehow, he gets two sweet kids to love him. And the kids are perfect in this story - I really enjoyed them.

My Thoughts:
Single Dad Dilemma is the second book in The Kings series, following Lily Townsend and Barrett King. Barrett is a grumpy football coach and single dad to Maggie and Bryce. Lily is the equally grumpy dog mom who happens to be the temporary house sitter for Barrett's neighbors. After the kids scare off another nanny, Lily agrees to help out for a short time. Even though she never planned to get attached, Lily forms a super sweet bond with the kids and slowly grows closer to Barrett, too. Lily was easy to root for. She is independent, guarded, and a little chaotic, but in the best way. Barrett grew on me, and I loved how much he loved his kids. Under all that grumpiness, he is softhearted and surprisingly sweet. This book was so much more than I expected. What starts as a funny, sweet story ends up being surprisingly emotional. Lily went through a lot, and it was good to see her learn to allow love into her life again. The super slow-burn romance between Lily and Barrett felt natural, and I loved witnessing them find what they needed in each other.

Narration:
CJ Bloom and Aiden Snow perform this audiobook in dual-style narration. They did a wonderful job giving voices to Lily and Barrett and bringing their fun and emotional story to life. I loved how their personalities and grumpy/grumpy dynamic were captured. CJ and Aiden nailed the banter, humor, vulnerability, the palpable chemistry between these characters, and, of course, the heartfelt moments throughout the story. Their performances were fantastic and I really enjoyed listening.

Thanks to Karla Sorensen, Montlake, and Brilliance Audio for the review opportunity. Opinions expressed are my own.

WOW what a ride 😎
First, if you love slow burn, then this book is an absolute must-read for you. It was definitely the slowest slow burn I've ever read 🙈 But Barrett and Lily never made it boring.

I was so excited to read more about Barrett's kids. They appeared shortly in book 1, and I loved them instantly, especially Maggie. She is a little genius. I'm pretty sure she could work for the FBI or CIA, or whatever. She knows how to use a computer better than 99% of every adult, and she is only 10. I mean, I was ahead of all the kids when I was 10 because that's when I got my first computer; before that, I had to share it with my parents. But I only played on it, I never learned to code or "more" 🙈 So, I'm still a bit jealous about Maggie 😎

You just don't get a very slow burn with this book, but also a grumpy x grumpy PLUS a grumpy dog 🤣 The only ones who aren't grumpy are the kids.

I know lots of ppl hate when a pet is dying in books, so be aware, Larry dies. But let's be honest, he was 14 years old and death is part of our lives. The most important thing for me is that they die respectfully, and that's definitely happening here.

Thanks to the author, Montlake, and @netgalley for trusting me with an ARC 🩷

I definitely judged a book by the cover on this one. I wasn't really sure what to expect but definitely got more than I bargained for! The spicy romance that I felt would be brimming with spice actually became one of the best books I have read this year with just a minimal amount of spiciness! This book is the second in its series and revolves around Lily who has some demons in her past that make her not want to commit to people or places, so she lives a life of moving around a lot. Barrett is a single dad and head NFL coach that desperately needs someone to help with his kids and get him out of his serious shell. Lily and Barrett meet when his kids befriend Lily's dog and then worm their way into her heart. Barrett? Not so much. However, after a book filled with some serious tension and slow burn will Barrett ease up in life to let Lily into his heart and will Lily forego her free lifestyle to settle down with his family?

I definitely need to read the first book in this series. I loved the slow burn, the back stories for each character as well. Character development was so spot on and both main characters were simple yet complex and you wanted to root for them. I loved this story and would recommend to anyone loving a single dad, slow burn romance!

Thanks to NetGalley, Karla Sorensen, and Montlake for allowing me to review this ARC!

Quick Summary: A fight for forever romance

My Review: Single Dad Dilemma by Karla Sorensen is book #2 in The Kings series. It is scheduled for release on 11/18/25.

About the Book: "A gruff, divorced NFL coach meets his match in an equally grumpy, commitment-phobic neighbor..."

In My Own Words: A grump and a grinch clash, kiss, fall in love, and find home.

About the Characters: I adored the entire cast of characters. The team, the support staff, the kids, the King family, and most importantly Lily and Larry. They were all special.

About the Leads:

- Barrett -> Rigid, Loving, Well intentioned, Passionate, Patient, Romantic

- Lily - > Searching, Sensitive, Guarded, Protective, Hurting, Hilarious

These two were a powder keg. From the moment they met, it was easy to see that something was there between them. The witty banter, the profanity laced quips, the emotional revelations, the friendly support, the sexy times, the family time, and the ever evolving relationship were golden.

About the Conflict: The conflict load was fairly light in this story. The emotional arc carried the weight, and it was so worth it to read.

About the Audiobook: This novel was narrated by Aiden Snow and CJ Bloom. I have heard both narrators before on a number of book projects. They always make for a sensational listening experience. This time was no different. I thoroughly enjoyed their delivery.

My Favorite Scenes (coded, so as to avoid spoilers):

- The Mixer
- The Generator Experience
- Have You Met My Brother?
- The First Time I Knew
- Tattoo Confessions
- Zoom!
- Leaping For Love
- A Yellow Apron
- Family Surprises
- Not Until You

Honorable Mention: Larry 😭 - > He was the link to the past and the present. He also had a touching hand in the future.

My Final Say: I experienced all the big emotions with this sweet read. It was funny, it was sad, and it was tense, and it was deep. It gets a hidden gem rating, without a doubt. I particularly loved the found family and the pseudo grump angles the most. I can very easily say that this one is going on my read on repeat list. It's a keeper!

Other: Readers who enjoy sports romances, found family stories, life after loss scenarios, and emo-rich dramas will really like this story.

Sincere appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher (Brilliance Publishing | Brilliance Audio), and to NetGalley. If you want to read a slow burn that actually slow burns you need to read this book. I haven’t been hooked on a story like this in a while. This has such a good balance of character growth as well as the romance between both main characters. I loved getting to see Lily fall in love not only Barrett but also with Maggie and Bryce. The way she became friends with them in such a hesitant but endearing way was adorable especially when she claimed to be so grumpy. When we finally find out about her past it is so easy to see why she was constantly moving and could never settle but the strength she had to finally put down roots was admirable. Barrett is one hunk of a grumpy man but he had such a patient and thoughtful side I was in love instantly. They way he waited for Lily to find her strength and was ready for her to come back to him ugh what a man. I haven’t read the first book in the series but will definitely be going back to read about Griffin and Ruby! Thank you so much to Karla and NetGalley for the ARC!

Can they stop being lonely together?

3.5 stars

This is a romance between 2 extremely guarded characters. Both Garrett and Lily are lonely and in pain. While they have very different personalities and generate a lot of static together, it seems as if they have been sent into each other's lives to challenge each other to risk making changes and opening up.

This is a very, very slow burn. The main characters don't really connect and get to know each other until the last 20% of the book. There's lots of attraction but only fleeting interactions and sharing. Garrett and Lily mostly observe each other through how they each interact with his son and daughter.

The main characters are appealing and sell the opposites attract theme. He's a highly structured and disciplined football coach who schedules his life in 15 minute intervals but sincerely loves his children. She's more of a free spirit, moving from place to place every 6 months and inking important memories on her body. She also loves his kids.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was not a favourite. But, there were some things I liked. I was able to read the book in a day, and the characters were okay, I liked them. But it stopped there. This was supposed to be a romance, but any romantic stuff happened when I had already passed 70% of the book. Then what was the point of the book being a Romance? I was disappointed because it took a long time to get to the actual storyline and the characters' past.

Ohhh, Karla delivered with this one! I am obsessed with Maggie and her personality. What a firecracker!

The grumpier the better for me and I was not disappointed. The grumpiness adds to the chemistry and the tension. Boy did I enjoy the tension!

The storyline was compelling and kept me engaged throughout the book. I experienced a full spectrum of emotions while reading and honestly that’s really satisfying for me. Laughing one minute, crying the next.

“Maybe I want someone who’s a little mean to me.”

This book had me kicking my legs at the banter between these two grumps. Lily and Barrett were so stubborn in the best way! Hot Angry Daddy is my new favorite nickname.

I was thoroughly entertained with these two but Maggie and Bryce really stole the show in this book. I was wiping away tears at how sweet these two kids were.

This book made me feel all the feels and I don’t regret it in the least bit. I loved Ruby and Griffen but Lily and Barrett🙌. Never read a grumpy x grumpy book quite like this.

This is a slow burn but when it heats up, Barrett King turns into the big bad wolf in the best possible way😏.

I was so happy the hear Barrett was getting an HEA and Lily was his match in every possible way!

Thank you to Karla Sorenson and netgalley for this opportunity!

I loved Single Dad Dilemma! It was sweet and flirty with fantastic banter, full of entertaining moments, and so much emotion. I adored the slow burn between Barrett and Lily, their sizzling attraction, and the incredible build. This book had everything I love in a story, and I devoured it!

Barrett was hardworking, and I adored how much he loved his kids and wanted to be there for them. I couldn’t get enough of Lily and her grumpy self (and her hilarious conversations with her equally grumpy dog). From the start, they butt heads, and their sharp banter was laced with an undeniable chemistry and building heat. I really enjoyed watching them open up, drop their guards, and begin to heal from their pasts and really grow. Lily had some deep secrets that added an extra layer of emotion, and when she finally shared, it was heartbreaking. There were a lot of heartfelt moments throughout that helped to create a wonderful story.

There were so many great characters that I enjoyed. Barrett’s kids were a delight, and I loved the scenes with them and how they bonded with Lily. I especially appreciated Barrett's relationship with his brother and the growth the two had. I loved Lily’s growing circle of friends as well, and what they added to the story.

I thought there was an excellent build with an inviting slow burn that was incredibly well developed. When the sparks finally ignited, it was explosive and sweet and beautiful. Add in the dual POV and an epilogue that left me smiling, and this book was an absolute winner. From start to finish, this story had it all. I adored every second!

Sorensen has become an autobuy for me.
Imagine my surprise and pure glee when this one popped up on Netgalley!
Needless to say, I jumped on it because I loved book 1 so much and I couldn't wait to see how grumpy Barrett would get his HEA.
There's so much to love in this book, Barrett and Lily of course, but we have to talk about Maggie and Bryce, Barrett's kids. OMG... I loved them so much.
This book can be a little heavy/angtsy at times, and the kids really helped to balance it out. They were so freaking funny and sweet, and they totally reeled Lily in even when Barrett wasn't quite on board yet.
I read this in July, and it's coming out in November, and let me tell you, this is a perfect cold weather book. It takes place around Christmas in Buffalo, and reading this one under a blanket will be *chef's kiss*.

-Slow burn 🔥 (worth the wait)
-He's gruff and grumpy 😠
-She's a loner, kinda grumpy too. 😠
-Football 🏈
-Christmas! 🎄
- Cute kids 👧🏻 👦🏻
-We get to see Griffin and Ruby (from book 1) 🩷
-Barrett wears glasses sometimes. 😍

Thank you to Netgalley and Montlake for an advance copy.

Loved this grumpy/grumpy slow burn. It’s actually almost more of a long thaw, as they each gradually lower their guard.

This is not the most original storyline but I love Sorenson’s writing and this one pulled me along and gave me all the feels.

Barrett is an NFL football coach struggling to balance work and his two precocious preteen kids. He meets Lily when she is house sitting next door and the kids meet her while she’s outside with her dog, Larry. She starts watching the kids in the afternoon and they form an immediate bond.

The tension revolves around her mysterious past and why she’s never settled down and each of them being willing to open themselves up to someone else.

❤️No third act breakup. She does move away for 6 months at the end, but they stay together and it doesn’t drag down the story.
🗣️Communication. - There are things they don’t share about themselves; they each hold their stories close, especially Lily. It’s handled well though and there is no big misunderstanding driving the plot.
🥶Setting: the story takes place in Buffalo during the late fall/winter. The cold and snow help create memorable parts of the story.
🫣No OM/OW. Neither have been with anyone for years. Him since his divorce and we’re not sure how long for her, but awhile. The ex wife is not an issue; she lives in California and doesn’t make an appearance.
🌶️Spice: this is a slow burn with them finally getting together at 80%. It’s clear there’s attraction, but he won’t act on it until it’s clear that they both want more. There’s essentially one scene when they get together.
🧑‍🧑‍🧒Kids (Bryce and Maggie): his two kids play an important role in us getting to know Lily throughout the book, but particularly in the first 30%. They let us see her heart and soft side, which is a nice counterbalance to all the grumbling w Barrett.
🏠Forced proximity. She lives next door and watches the kids in the afternoon in the beginning. Later, she and Barrett are stuck together in his house during a snowstorm.
👩🏻‍🤝‍👨🏼Barrett is a tough, no nonsense, regimented guy. He has his life broken down into 15 minute increments. He is having a bit of a crisis of confidence - worried that he’s boring, not handing the children well, and struggling as the new head coach with a troublesome player. Lily doesn’t like most people and avoids making connections. She has a tragic past which is ultimately revealed. I don’t honestly know what she does with her time other than occasionally bake cookies. And this seems like a weird hobby for someone who typically has no one to give them to. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Both are genuinely good people with kind hearts.
🐶Larry - is Lily’s cranky elderly dog that everyone loves. He is an emotional part of the story.
👥Dual POV/HEA. Marriage and birth of twins in epilogue.

Why not 5 stars:
- I wanted Lily to have a little bit more to her than a tragic back story, random tattoos, and cookies. Like what does she do all day?
- The pacing felt slightly off and rushed at the end. They were fighting their feelings for the first 80% and I would have loved to see the ‘getting together’ part drawn out over more than just 2 days. I wanted more hand holding, lingering touches, hugs, etc. (sigh)

‼️Favorite bits (in no order): Spoilers
- their meet cute - when she and the kids are riding down the stairs on a mattress and then he arrives and is rude. She gets annoyed and shuts the door in his face
- the way she has no idea who he is and doesn’t care
- When she and the kids went sledding and went back to his house - she was cold and wrapped his blanket around her and wore his slippers
- all her little tattoos and how each tell a story. Whenever she opens his up and tells him about one, he asks “why did you tell me?”
- When she took the kids to his teams practice and she stood on the sidelines w him and they talked and had a real conversation for maybe the first time
- when he broke her little shovel and he awkwardly tried to help and then gave her his
- how he has no game at all and she calls him out on it lol
- when she spent Christmas Eve day with them. Playing scrabble, the yellow mixer she got Lily.
- his parents and how kind they were to her
- every scene w Larry. The way he liked the kids and oof Barrett waiting w her at the vet.
- when she was laying in the snow and he came out to join her and they talked about the snowflakes. ❄️ and she wanted to remember it.
- when they play 20 questions and he opens up about his divorce. And she tells him that he’s not boring and he knows how well she sees him.
- the whole scene during the snowstorm.
