A Carol for Mrs. Dickens

Rate this book
Catherine Dickens, wife of Charles Dickens, experiences her own Christmas Eve transformation as she magically travels through her cherished memories to rediscover her lost love of Christmas.

By 1851, all of London has fallen in love with A Christmas Carol, heralding Charles Dickens as “the man who invented Christmas.” But for his wife, Catherine, Christmas is less of a reason for celebration and more of a burden. Between hosting lavish parties, decorating her home, and caring for her eight children—with one more on the way—she feels more like Scrooge than herself this year.

But everything changes after a chance encounter with a kitchen cook, who reminds her that Christmas can be a time of miracles and magic, if she is willing to open her heart.

Armed with a magical sprig of holly, Kate embarks on three transformative journeys into her past, hoping to reconnect with the love she once felt for the holiday—and with herself. But can these memories be enough to reignite her Christmas spirit? Or are such miraculous transformations only meant for the characters in her husband’s beloved tales?

Inspired by real individuals, A Carol for Mrs. Dickens reminds us that the true spirit of the holiday lies in love, faith, and the joy of giving.

Whew. I need to let this one simmer for a bit longer before I do a full review because I have THOUGHTS.

This is an "It's a Wonderful Life"-esque Christmas story, centered around Catherine Dickens, wife of Charles Dickens.

Catherine, pregnant with her 10th child, is struggling to feel the magic of Christmas. I can't imagine why. She is magically transported back in time to various periods of her life as a way to remember the meaning of Christmas and to help her find that joy again.

The problem? In real life, the Dickens's marriage is about to implode, with Charles slanderously portraying Catherine as crazy and scandalously taking up with an 18-year-old actress. Portraying Catherine and Charles as one big happy family while ignoring their true and tragic history made it difficult to buy into this story.

Had it been an unrelated person using A Christmas Carol to remember the meaning of Christmas, I would have liked it so much better.

This was a highly anticipated book for me, and I'm sad it fell flat due to the changing of history.

The writing itself was beautiful, and the message of the meaning of Christmas is a good and important one.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is definitely an honest review.

"A Carol for Mrs. Dickens" by Rebecca Connolly is a sweet and festive holiday retelling of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. I loved this beautiful, short, and poignant story of what Christmas may have been like for Charles Dickens’ wife after the success of his book “A Christmas Carol.” It conveys how Catherine might have felt extra pressure to enjoy Christmas and make it special. It was neat to see things from her point of view, and she was very relatable. The book has themes of family, faith, love, and service. I enjoyed following Catherine on three journeys through her memories (which mirror those taken by Scrooge and the three ghosts in “A Christmas Carol”). The message of Christmas and its true meaning was so beautifully shared. Catherine also learns to take the good with the bad, to not take things for granted, and to share the beautiful light of Christmas with the world. I loved the message of finding joy where it already exists and to keep Christ at the center. The book itself is beautiful, with illustrations throughout, and includes “A Christmastide Calendar” and “Victorian Christmas Traditions and History” in the back. This sweet and easy read will be sure to bring joy to your heart!

Content: I give this book a PG rating. Some examples of the content: loss of a child; mention of ghosts from “A Christmas Carol.”

TW: loss of a child.

A woman married to the man who is famous for ‘inventing Christmas’ finds herself struggling to appreciate let alone enjoy the holiday festivities and needs a little Christmas magic to restore her cheer. Rebecca Connolly’s books and stories are long-time family to me so I was delighted to pick up her heartwarming novella-length tribute to a Christmas classic.

My full review will post at The Reading Frenzy TBA.

This is my second novel to read by Rebecca Connolly. I'm overjoyed to have happened across this one.

Catherine, Mrs. Charles Dickens, receives her very own three "ghosts" -- or reminders of keeping the Christmas spirit alive.

Connolly has done well in piecing together the colorful personality of Charles Dickens -- even secondhand bringing to life his own characters inside of this book. I'm amazed how everything fits together so well!

The author blends in the true Christmas message, which I so enjoyed. She speaks of Jesus' birth and His impact on the world.

The Victorian illustrations sprinkled all throughout the book are just marvelous! They truly add to the aesthetic of the story.

For fans of A Christmas Carol, Downtown Abbey (or similar historical dramas).

A Christmas story told from the viewpoint of Mrs. Kate Dickens. The Christmas traditions set by her husband Charles hosting a party for friends on Christmas Eve feel like too much for Kate, who is expecting a baby, and in the middle of grieving, her heart just isn't into Christmas. Kate experiences her own three Christmas memories instead of Christmas ghosts as told in the beoved book written by her husband,
I enjoyed this novella as it sets the tone for the Christmas season.

I loved the beauty of this sweet story. A reminder that though there are struggles and trials, joy will come again. Sometimes we need gentle nudges and help at remembering what joy and carefree moments feel like. And sometimes we get too caught up in busyness and let that distract us. But taking time to focus on what's truly important and loving and serving those around us can truly help bring healing and joy.

When I reached the end of the story, I just felt such a lightening of my heart and spirit and was so grateful for the tender and sweet words of this story. There came a point where I teared up and just felt this beautiful feeling of calm and joy. It's been a year of many losses of loved ones this year. And it has been hard and emotional. And finding joy in the little moments and memories, as well as creating memories through intentional time with family, friends and loved ones has been a great priority and focus for me. This book was just a beautiful reminder of that and had me excited for Christmas to come soon. The joy and magic and excitement of celebrating our Savior, the one who knows our pain and sorrows, our joys and desires. He has been the one to bring peace and healing to my heart. I really loved watching Mrs. Dickens come full circle to some very precious and poignant moments in her life. Truly beautiful! I hope you enjoy it and that it touches your heart in some way if you read it!

Content: Clean. There are some Christian elements in the book as the focus is on Christmas and Christ's birth. Also, if you are aware of the history of Charles Dickens and his wife, Catherine, you'll know that not too much past this moment in time their marriage falls apart. I chose not to focus on that while reading this book and seeing the beauty of what Catherine was experiencing and learning. I encourage you to do the same. Regardless of what they have experienced and what was to come for them, the Dickens', more specifically Catherine, has a couple beautiful moments during this Christmas (yes I know it is fictionalized).

“I do not believe this giddiness will last, but I believe that my own happiness is a choice. And I choose it with him.”

This is the sweetest Christmas story, as it is easy to relate to Kate and the hustle and bustle that many moms experience during this beloved time of year. The burdens of life and expectations often cause a scrooge-like attitude to descend, and that’s just where she finds herself in 1851, as the wife of famed Charles Dickens.

A magical sprig of holly sends her on three pivotal journeys that remind her of the love and simple joys of family and the season, and this book is a pure delight. Many of us can use the reminders to find happiness in the little things, especially in our partner and family, as life turns heavy, busy, and difficult.

While I claim that Christmas is my favorite holiday, I’m already dreading the busyness, shopping, and obligations, but now I’m looking forward to shifting my attitude and focusing on what truly matters.

This story truly is the sweetest and I really enjoyed it.

This lovely little book gives us a fresh and heartfelt look at the Dickens family through the eyes of Catherine (Kate) Dickens, the woman behind the man who “invented Christmas.” It’s 1851, and Kate is feeling anything but festive. With eight children, endless parties to host, and another baby on the way, she’s completely worn out—and Christmas feels more like a chore than a joy, and she feels like Ebenezer Scrooge.

That changes when she meets a kind kitchen cook who gives her a sprig of holly. What follows is a series of touching and magical journeys into Catherine’s own past, each helping her remember what Christmas once meant to her. Through these moments, she slowly rediscovers her love for the season—and for herself.

I don't have nearly as many children as Catherine had, but I understand how she felt in the story—there's always so much to do around the holidays, and we often forget the true meaning of what we're celebrating. I loved how Kate remembered the why of Christmas and wanted to give to those less fortunate. Like most people, I'm very familiar with Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, but I never knew anything about his family. This story drew me in so completely that I went searching for more about Catherine's real life.

Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" has always been a favorite of mine. "A Carol for Mrs. Dickens" offers a fresh take on the classic story. Catherine Dickens, busy with holiday plans for family and friends, finds her Christmas spirit dimmed by the grief of losing a child. Just like Ebenezer Scrooge in the original tale, Catherine experiences a series of events on Christmas Eve. These encounters shift her views on Christmas, her husband, children, and life. Catherine is a kind soul who deeply loves her family and husband. I really liked Catherine as a character. She was searching for the true meaning of Christmas and longed for the joy she felt was missing in her life.

This new Christmas Carol, though only 170 pages, is rich with important messages. It explores the Christmas spirit, the birth of Jesus, and the importance of helping those less fortunate. This book makes a perfect gift for loved ones or a welcome addition to your own holiday reading. It will warm your heart and fill your life with the Christmas spirit.

You know, there was a lot of depth in this story. For such a short read, I found myself really pulled in, sympathizing with and totally understanding the mindset Kate was in. Yes, it’s a Christmas story, but I feel like the lessons she learns through her experience were so enlightening. There was a lot to take away, wisdom that could be applied throughout the year, not just during the holidays.

Kate is going through all the usual Christmas festivities, but this year, she’s not feeling any joy in it at all. And that’s not exactly ideal when you’re the wife of Charles Dickens. But when the magic of Christmas Past illuminates some long-buried memories, Kate begins to see Christmas and her life as a mother, wife, and believer in a new light.

This was a cozy read. I loved the length, the descriptions were perfect, and I truly felt pulled into the story and the emotions it stirred up.

I gave this 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

A Carol for Mrs. Dickens
by Rebecca Connolly is a great novella that helps put the heart and promise into a festive season.

I enjoyed this quick novella that was a take on Dickens’ classic novel. This time it is his wife, Catherine, that needs the self-reflection. She has the right foundation, that Christmas is ultimately about the birth of Christ, however this meaning loses its purpose if one is deflated, down, and dreading day to day life and looking at things as drudgeries.

This time of remembrance and reflection helps pull out the love and passion for life that she still has for life and her husband and helps her realize this in time to celebrate all the reasons for the season.

4.5/5 stars

A heartfelt thank you to @author.rebecca.connolly, @shadowmountainpub, and @austenprose for the incredible #gifted book!

This enchanting Christmas story, centered around Mrs. Dickens, truly captured my heart.

Mrs. Dickens, a devoted mother of nine with another on the way, struggles to embrace the spirit of the season. As she navigates a Christmas party, she embarks on three transformative journeys into the past, reigniting her faith and rekindling her holiday spirit.

I was particularly moved by the fresh perspective on this classic tale and the poignant events that restored Catherine's joy and her desire to spread Christmas cheer. She embodies the essence of a mother striving to balance family, love, and faith. Her journey beautifully illustrates the rediscovery of life's true treasures, her love for her children, her husband, and her devotion to the Lord.

The inclusion of Victorian Christmas traditions and history at the end of the book was a delightful touch. The exquisite Victorian illustrations sprinkled throughout serve as a lovely reminder of the season's magic!

This novella is the perfect companion for the holiday season, a story I intend to revisit each year, reminding me amidst the hustle and bustle of the true meaning of Christmas.

Loved it!

This year, I’ve received much reading joy from continuations—sequel novels with the continuity and/or style of an established series. So I was here for a version of the Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol, that fleshes out the character of Catherine, wife of Charles Dickens. I loved envisioning a spiritual depth and growth in Catherine Dickens—such that would uphold her to find joy, in spite of the pains and losses of life. And I’ve read that Dickens’ daughter’s letters imply his regret for how he treated his wife in his later years—so I was ready to give him the benefit of the doubt in this story as well.

This sweet, simple story reminds us that though “all was not perfect, all would be well. And that is enough.” Author Rebecca Connolly’s tale is well-written, inspiring & perfect for gift-giving. Be sure to check it out this holiday season!

(Here are some of the other continuation stories I have loved: Nicholas Meyers writes Sherlock Holmes stories from the POV of a brave and big-hearted Watson. Sophie Hannah writes stories of Hercule Poirot from the POV of the young & eager detective he is mentoring, Edward Catchpool. Jill Paton Walsh continues the sophisticated banter & mystery solving skills of Dorothy Sayers’ Harriet Vane & Lord Peter Wimsey. Laurie R. King gives life to Mary Russell, a young woman who was first mentored by & then married to a kinder, gentler Sherlock Holmes. And H. G. Parry turns her talent to stories that set classics like A Tale of Two Cities in alternate magical universes.)

A Carol for Mrs. Dickens by Rebecca Connoly is set in London 1851 at a house party hosted by Charles Dickens.
In all the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations and her husband’s enthusiasm for the holiday, Kate Dickens has lost her zeal for the sacred time of year. In the midst of a Christmas party, Kate is taken on a memory journey much like Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Instead of ghosts, Kate is transported by her recollections to times around Christmases past that cause her to ponder the real reason for Christmas: the birth of the Savior. Her contemplations on the past create a new appreciation for the spirit of Christmas and re-awaken her giving heart. “Christmas felt most like Christmas when she was with family.”
I liked the addition of Victorian Christmas Traditions and History at the end.
This story is just right for the holiday season and spells out the true faith of Christmas.

I am an avid Christmas lover and also love A Christmas Carol, so I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to read an early copy of A Carol for Mrs. Dickens.

There are times in life when we lose our joy in events and activities that previously brought great joy. It's so easy as a wife and mother to let life overwhelm us.

This story is a reminder that happiness is a choice. Our children, spouse, and family are the key sources of that happiness, even if we may forget it on occasion.

I love the spin on the classic story and the events that brought back Catherine's joy and her urge to spread Christmas cheer.

This is one that is just an overall feel-good read that I will definitely be reading each year for Christmas. It was truly a joy to read, and my grandbaby loved having it read to her as well!

Thank you to @shadowmountainpress and Rebecca Connolly for the gifted copy of A Carol for Mrs. Dickens.

It’s a short story about the wife of Charles Dickens, imagining one Christmas Eve and morning when she must have been exhausted and perhaps struggled to feel the Christmas spirit. It’s relatable as a mom of multiple kids with immense responsibilities, and it’s a lovely reminder of the true meaning of the season, both religious and secular.

Perfect to give to the busy moms in your life as they celebrate the Christmas season, sooner than we probably think!

This little Christmas novella was really sweet and easy to read. With her husband’s success after writing A Christmas Carol she starts to feel overlooked and doesn’t enjoy Christmas like she once did. She is given the gift of seeing Christmases past like in her husband’s story. I was inspired by her experiences and my heart was warmed just like Mrs. Dickens. This story is not to be missed during Christmas time!

A Carol for Mrs. Dickens is a poignant Christmas story featuring a magical sprig of holly and three memories that restore Mrs. Dickens’ Christmas Spirit.

Catherine “Kate” Dickens is married to Charles Dickens and they are the parents of several children. Mrs. Dickens is feeling the stress of mothering, planning/hosting lavish parties, and decorating during the Christmas season. Through a magical sprig of holly, Kate revisits three memories from the past. Will these visits renew her Christmas spirit?

Fans of A Christmas Carol and Charles Dickens will appreciate this atmospheric novella told from the perspective of Mrs. Dickens. This could be a fun companion read for the classic tale.

Many women (and maybe some men) can relate to the burnout that Mrs. Dickens experiences! Buying the presents, hosting the parties, decorating the house, and meeting everyone’s expectations can steal the joy of the Christmas season. In addition to having eight (living) children, grieving the loss of a ninth, and one more on the way, Mrs. Dickens has a great deal on her plate. Mr. Dickens is a large and colorful personality who is kind, but he is not fully empathetic to his wife’s stress, circumstances, or mood.

Through a magical sprig of holly and revisiting three memories, Mrs. Dickens rediscovers the joy and meaning of Christmas. I love how the author reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas as Mrs. Dickens puts this rediscovered joy into action in the concluding pages of the novella.

Fans of Rebecca Connolly know they are in good hands. A Carol for Mrs. Dickens is atmospheric, compelling, and poignant. Mrs. Dickens is relatable, and we cheer for her well-being throughout. With its message of the true meaning of Christmas, this will be an inspirational and wonderful Christmas read and gift! (Also, a great selection for #NovellasInNovember)

Content Consideration: death of a child (in the past), grief, depression

We are invited to explore the life of Catherine Dickens, the wife of the renowned author of A Christmas Carol. Her journey through cherished memories and the search for the true meaning of Christmas beautifully highlights the joy that can sometimes feel lost amidst the holiday hustle. In this tale, she’s taken back to her childhood Christmas, and here, she finds what had been missing. Gifts, decorations, and parties were lovely, but the season’s meaning was that God was the source of true joy and peace. This inspiring story serves as a heartfelt reminder of why we celebrate the season. It would make a thoughtful gift.

“She has found Christmas alive and well within her life and her memories.”

A new twist on A Christmas Carol
Rebecca Connolly has done it again in this wonderful, thought-provoking story. Christmas has come again and Catherine, Kate, Dickens feels the burdens of the season. With decorations, parties, guests, pregnancy, and of course her children and husband Charles, she is feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and not at all merry and bright. When an encounter with a temporary cook sends her on her own adventure reliving some of her best Christmas memories attitudes and values are re-evaluated. Can she find the Christmas she used to know? A wonderful heart touching story. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the copy. This is my review and all thoughts are my own.

••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~Catherine Dickebs struggles with the burdens of Christmas despite her husband’s success with A Christmas Carol so, this Christmas, a magical sprig of Holly will lead her one on a dear journey into her past, hopefully to rekindle her faith and holiday spirit…

“Take heart, madam. Open your heart, if not your mind, and try to see the warmth Christmas once held for you, the fondness you once felt. Perhaps you might recapture a glimpse of those memories to bolster you and find the balm you seek.“

-Inspired by a Brloved Classic, A CAROL for MRS. DICKENS, is a heartwarming tale that beautifully celebrates love, faith, service, and the simple joys of Christmas. I was drawn to the lovely illustrations before each new chapter within, and with some bonus content, including dear Victorian Christmas Traditions.
I thoroughly enjoyed this quick but delightful story and the journey Catherine went on, which has me looking more forward to the Christmas Season in months ahead. I loved the inspiring and gentle reminder that throughout that, the true spirit of the holiday lies in love, faith, and the joy of giving. With a flicker of hope, we can be brave. This is a quick-fast paced story filled with depth and joy. Worth the the dear read!📚❤️🎄

“Miracles take place at Christmas, and magic too. If you let Christmas in, madam, you may find it is already there.”

•Content: some grief/loss, death of a loved one (in past; 8 months ago), some drinking, no language, no violence.

“We take the good with the bad. And there is always good.”

-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

“It felt like a daunting task, but something in this woman’s plea reached deep within Kate’s soul and lit a tiny wick of hope. And that was enough to make her brave.”

Any one that is familiar with Charles Dickens' story, A Christmas Carol, knows all too well that when things get overwhelming, the best treatment is to go back through our experiences and try to understand where we came from and what we might have lost sight of.

Catherina Dickens (Kate) is having one of the hardest Christmas Eve's yet. She's pregnant with their tenth child, after the lost of their most recent one not too long ago, and she finds herself struggling to put on an act to enjoy the holiday festivities. Her husband is the man who has reignited the Christmas spirit in London and she's working alongside him to put together their festivities, but her heart just isn't in it.

Struggling with remembering the joy she used to have from this holiday, what her and her husband shared in that enjoyment, and finding her faith again are some of the main themes of this very short and beautiful book.

Just like in A Christmas Carol, Kate is whisked away to earlier memories of herself during this time of year in a reminiscent manner so that she can reignite her own passions and find that driving force that lives inside her. For her, she doesn't need the fancy decorations or the lavish parties, but helping those in need and remembering her Faith are the cornerstones.

The thing I loved most about this book was how much it focused on Kate's needs as a wife, mother and woman. She is struggling with her place in the household, sometimes feeling overwhelmed with all that comes with running the house with eight previous children and a husband. Kate certainly has her hands full. But those little reminders throughout this story of finding joys in every one of those moments, was something I carried deeply from this one.

A perfect start to my Holiday reading season and one I know I won't forget anytime soon!

What is your favorite Christmas novel or short story? A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is one of my favorites and I read it most years for Christmas.

Set in the Christmas of 1851, Catherine Dickens is struggling as she hosts Christmas parties, raises eight children, mourns the loss of a child, and is expecting another child. She feels she has lost the spirit of Christmas. She talks with a cook who reminds her that Christmas can be a time of miracles and magic. Afterwards, she finds herself living through Christmases of the past to once again rediscover the true meaning of Christmas. Will she rediscover her faith and love for Christmas?

My thoughts on this book:
• This was a short, quick read.

• It included beautiful Victorian illustrations. I loved them and it really added to the ambiance of the book.

• I loved the descriptions of food and entertaining during Victorian times.

• The character of Charles Dickens was fantastically drawn.

• I really liked the faith message with the true meaning of Christmas – Christ’s birth. It was a good reminder for us all in the hustle and bustle of Christmas to remember the true meaning of the season.

• This is a perfect story for anyone that loves a good historical Christmas novel or has enjoyed watching The Man who Invented Christmas, A Christmas Carol, or Victoria.

Overall, A Carol for Mrs. Dickens by Rebecca Connolly is a delightful holiday read that reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas.

“A Carol for Mrs. Dickens” is a super cozy take on the classic Christmas vibe, putting Catherine Dickens, Charles Dickens’ wife, front and center instead of old Scrooge. It’s 1851, and Catherine’s feeling wiped out from juggling eight kids (with another on the way), throwing epic holiday parties, and keeping up with her husband’s over-the-top Christmas obsession. A magical sprig of holly sends her on a trip down memory lane, helping her rediscover why she used to love the season. It’s got that warm, Dickensian Christmas glow, but feels fresh with its focus on Catherine’s personal journey.

The writing pulls you right into Victorian London, think twinkling lights, bustling markets, and all the holiday feels. Catherine’s memory-hopping adventures are vivid and heartfelt, making you root for her to find her spark again. That said, the story drags a bit in spots, and I wished it dug deeper into why Catherine’s so down instead of leaning on the whole “count your blessings” angle. A little more focus on her struggles and a stronger wrap-up would’ve made her journey hit even harder.

Still, this book’s a total holiday gem. It’s warm, touching, and perfect for curling up with on a winter night. It skips the ghosts of “A Christmas Carol” but keeps the heart, showing how small moments of love and connection can bring back the magic. If you’re picking one Christmas read this season, “A Carol for Mrs. Dickens” is a solid bet for something sweet and meaningful without being too heavy.

Many thanks to NetGalley, author Rebecca Connelly, and Shadow Mountain Publishing for providing me with an advanced, digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
