19thC Mine Shafts on Owlands Barf
The miners here were chasing a lead vein called the Grinton Dam Vein (despite being nowhere near Grinton), it outcropped near to the surface on Marrick Moor, but at Owlands Barf it was quite some way below the surface, hence the large quantities of spoil removed from the ground and piled up on the moor.
