NT5374 : Remains of hot houses, Amisfield Walled Garden
taken 1 year ago, near to Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland

Amisfield House was built by Francis Charteris, the 6th Earl of Wemyss in the 1750s. Although the house itself was demolished in 1928, the associated parkland, ruined stables, rococo summer house and large walled garden (at 8 acres, one of the largest in Scotland) remain.
The walled garden was built between 1782 and 1788 with four corner pavilions and laid out with paths radiating round a circular central feature. It was used for traditional cultivation until World War II and later as a market garden. It (and parts of the parkland) was purchased by the Town Council in 1969 and was used as a tree nursery in the 1980s, but fell into disrepair. Now owned by East Lothian Council, the garden was leased to the Amisfield Preservation Trust on a 99-year lease in 2013 and their volunteers have since transformed it into a well-kept working community garden.
