Viewed from Somerton Road bridge on March 5th 2020. The GWR Class 800 Intercity Express Train is travelling towards London Paddington on the South Wales Main Line. Class 800 trains are bimodal multiple units using electric traction motors able to draw power from electrified overhead lines where available (as here) or provide the electricity from underfloor diesel generators when outside the electrified network. The route is electrified from Paddington to Cardiff Central. Plans to electrify the route from Cardiff to Swansea were abandoned.
