The Grafton Centre is a shopping centre in Cambridge. It is one of the three main shopping centres in Cambridge – the others are the Lion Yard and the Grand Arcade, the newest and largest of the three. The Grafton Centre is on the eastern edge of the main shopping district while the Lion Yard and Grand Arcade are more central.
The Centre dominates Fitzroy Street and Burleigh Street. The main footprint is linear, running from east to west. It has three atria, the Eastern one being the largest. The mall is laid out across two storeys with some of the shops having more than one storey.
It also has a bus station, food court, Vue cinema and two multi-storey car parks.
British Home Stores was founded in London in 1928.
The department store is known for selling clothes and home ware.
In 2009 there were 193 stores employing over 17,000 people.
By 2015 there were only 171 stores employing 11,000 staff. The group was sold to Retail Acquisitions who drew up a list of 52 under-performing stores that they could close, sell off or downsize.
