Portsmouth Guildhall
The Guildhall was officially opened on August 9th 1890 by Prince Edward (later King Edward VII) and Princess Alexandra. During the Second World War, the building was severely damaged by Luftwaffe bombing in 1941. After the war the Corporation intended to demolish the remains of the building and build a new one. However popular opinion was to retain the external structure. The interior of the building was redesigned by Berry Webber, with as much of the outer shell retained as possible. The Guildhall was reopened by Queen Elizabeth II in June 1959. The Guildhall was Grade II listed in 1972.
