SK9830 : 'Decayed' hedge

taken 12 years ago, near to Bitchfield, Lincolnshire, England

'Decayed' hedge
'Decayed' hedge
Note decayed in the sense of rotting, but in the sense of no longer what it was. This close-planted row of Hawthorn and Hazel has very pronounced boles in a very narrow row, but then straggle skywards on long straight stems.

This was once a laid hedge, which at some point around 50 years ago was let go and maintenance stopped: perhaps when the adjacent block of land was put to woodland, an un-named plantation at the side of Ingoldsby wood.

It is not an act of over-imagination to suppose that this hedge was originally planted at the time of the Enclosure.
