Inscription celebrating the marriage of Edward Jenner
Inscription in the porch of Kingscote church celebrating the marriage of Edward Jenner and Catharine Kingscote on 6th March 1788. They originally met three and a half years earlier in September 1784 when Edward Jenner undertook a pioneering hydrogen balloon flight. Taking off from Berkeley Castle, the balloon floated eastwards and landed on Kingscote Estate, frightening the locals who were reaping in the fields, but obviously impressing Catharine. This was an unmanned flight with Edward Jenner flowing the flight of the balloon on horseback. Relaunching the balloon from Kingscote, it's thought it drifted northwards and landed on Birdlip Hill, near where today there is an inn named the Air Balloon which opened in 1784. Sadly the Air Balloon Inn was demolished in December 2023, it stood on a road junction, known as the 'Air Balloon Roundabout', a regular feature of the radio traffic news and the inn was demolished for the upgrading of this junction.
