NO0340 : Rohallion Castle

taken 14 years ago, near to Birnam, Perth And Kinross, Scotland

Rohallion Castle
Rohallion Castle
This small fortalice on the SE slopes of Birnam Hill is believed to date from the 16th century. The existing walls are around two to three feet high and there are small round towers with shotholes at both the NE and SW corners. It is surrounded by a small ditch with a low outer wall. Following the escape of King James VI 10 months after the Ruthven Raid the Earl of Ruthven, who had taken the king captive, is said to have hidden here in 1584.
In dry weather, with the bracken dead, access is straightforward but later in the year when the bracken is thigh high access must be difficult and even more so in wet weather.
