Soil sample

This plug of turf dug up near Barrow, Alaska shows a typical soil profile in tundra. The vegetation consists of moss and grass. A layer of dark brown organic matter extends down to a depth of 10 centimeters and beneath the organic layer is fine silt. Credit: Elchin Jafarov, NSIDC
