    Preface

One of the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh) of Hinduism, Lord Vishnu is known as the sustainer, protector and controller of the world. He is considered to be the embodiment of Satoguna (purity and goodness). Devotees who recite Vishnu Sahasranama (thousand names) also depict him as Vishnu Sahasrabahu (thousand-armed), which is symbolizing that Lord Vishnu takes care of the universe with his countless hands. Vaikuntha is his divine abode, where he is accompanied by his wife Lakshmi (goddess of wealth and prosperity) and his mount Garuda (a divine bird). Shankha (shell), Chakra (disk), Gada (mace) and lotus are his divine symbols.

In many Hindu texts including Bhagwat Purana, Lord Vishnu is described as incarnating on earth for the protection of dharma(righteousness) and destruction of unrighteousness. The number of these incarnations is considered to be ten, some of the prominent incarnations are Matsya (fish), Kurma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (half man, half lion), Vaman (dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Balram and Kalki. Through these incarnations, Lord Vishnu has protected dharma, protected the devotees, and destroyed the unrighteous. For example, as Rama he killed the demon king Ravana, as Krishna he destroyed the wrongdoings of the Kauravas and as Kalki he signaled the end of Kaliyuga.
