Blackburn has definitely done her research on underwater criminal investigation and cybersecurity. She uses this knowledge to enhance the mystery as she takes on the issue of human trafficking. We hear and read a lot about sex trafficking but less about labor trafficking which is the main topic of In Too Deep. The reader will be made aware of the types of jobs these people do among us as well as the types of things to notice as we encounter people from all walks of life. Dr. Sabrina Fleming may not be good at reading people, but she is a master at mining data from a computer and from the internet. This skill makes her an invaluable resource in certain crime investigations. Her friends, however, believe that this time it has also made her a prime target for people with things to hide. Police investigator Adam Campbell doesn't know what to think when it is revealed that a dead woman pulled from a lake has written him a message in permanent marker on her abdomen. Most of the time he doesn't know what to think about how Sabrina reacts to him either. During this case it is essential to figure out both of these situations and to decide what is next to be done. I believe Blackburn's readers will truly enjoy this story as many unexpected events arise and it becomes clear that not everything or everyone is what or who they are thought to be. I thank NetGalley and Revell Publishing for providing me with a copy of In Too Deep in exchange for my honest opinion. I was under no obligation to provide a positive review and received no monetary compensation. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5

“In Too Deep,” is a faith-based romance novel masquerading as a police procedural. Eventually, “thriller” the elements mentioned in the marketing blurb all appear, but they are embedded in hundreds of pages of typical romantic novel developments.
Boy (Adam) and girl (Sabrina) are attracted to each other, but initially they interpret the other as disinterested. Gradually they work through their self-doubts and the ambiguity and find true love. Along the way they frequently think about or invoke “our Father,” or just “Father.”
The focus on romance extends beyond the focal characters. Each of the six central characters is a gracious, thoughtful, wonderful, devout person who likes and respects each of the other central figures. There is no interpersonal tension among this tight-knit group. In one scene the principal characters engage in a group prayer with each taking a turn contributing to the prayer.
Unfortunately, the focus is on the emotional connections among the primary characters. Comments suggest that the previous novel in this series focused on Ryan (a detective) and Leigh (a critical care nurse) who are newly engaged, and my guess in that Gabe and Anissa, also detectives, will be fall in love in the next novel.
This book is definitely a disappointment. I enjoy a good romance novel, but I prefer to pick one because the plot description appeals to me, not because I have been misled. Tami Hoag does a superior job of integrating romance into the police procedural. Although not primarily a romance writer, Curtis Sittenfeld’s “Eligible,” is a thoroughly enjoyable contribution to the romance genre. Debbie Macomber is another romance writer I enjoy, and despite the flaws I have noted in Melody Carlson’s novels I continue to find her books worth reading. I am unlikely to read another offering by Blackburn. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

A forensic dive team in North Carolina is the focus of Lynn H Blackburn’s series, Dive Team Investigations. In book one, we met the team members and focused on Ryan and Leigh’s story. Book two, In Too Deep, tells the chilling tale of Adam and Sabrina. While I believe the book could stand on its own, I started out feeling that the team members were already my friends, not people I had just met.
What’s to love about this book? Blackburn strikes a good balance between great romantic suspense and relationship-driven narrative. What I loved most is that Sabrina is intelligent beyond belief, yet that character trait is countered by an unusual lack of common social skills. In other words, a great, but lovable, flawed protagonist.
Heavy topics are handled within these pages. My antennae went up. We’re talking about sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Where is the author taking me? Guilt, awareness, action? For me, I choose awareness.
I loved that prayers are a part of everyday needs in the novel, and some are spoken aloud. They’re not preachy, but natural, clear, and honest.
Points to Blackburn for exhibiting a sense of humor at a few critical points. Some thoughts just made me laugh. Try “baby cops.” Another was a paragraph listing Sabrina’s many injuries, followed by the statement she had never looked more beautiful. That just tickled my funny bone.
Thought-provoking quotes:
“You love the victims and the victimizers. We don’t understand that, Lord.”(How true!)
and
“...it’s not about how big our faith is. What matters is how big our God is.”~Sabrina
I highly recommend this series, and can’t wait for Gabe and Anissa’s story. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are solely my own, and no positive review was required. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

In Too Deep takes the reader back to the town of Carrington and its dedicated law enforcement officers, especially those involved in the dive team investigations. This series just keeps getting better — the cases are puzzling, the danger imminent, and the romance sweet. The second book in Dive Team Investigations focuses on geeky computer whiz Dr. Sabrina Fleming and handsome Adam Campbell, a white collar specialist. Together they make a good team, professionally and personally. If you are a fan of romantic suspense, you need to check this one out. Recommended!
The Dive Team Investigations series features an ensemble cast of professionals who work together on tough cases. Sabrina and Adam’s story is told in In Too Deep, but the reader will love how they interact with characters found in book one. I loved the developing romance between the two main characters — it was realistically portrayed with missteps, misunderstandings, and doubts that were very believable. Both Sabrina and Adam have some baggage that could cause some rough patches, but I loved how they accepted each other based on their own attitudes and actions. They are also both Christians who rely on God in both good and bad circumstances. Trust in His goodness is a part of both of their lives. This was actually very refreshing, as many books I read have characters with more doubts than faith. I loved that they both were quick to go to God for all their problems. Human labor trafficking is the center of the police investigation, and Blackburn did a great job in making this reader aware of the insidious evil all around us. And because this book is suspense there is plenty of action with enough twists to keep the reader guessing.
Although it can be read as a standalone novel, In Too Deep is a great continuation of Blackburn’s series. I am eagerly anticipating more danger and romance to come! If you Santa put a gift card in your stocking, consider diving in to these great books!
Recommended.

This is the second book in this series and they just keep getting better. I loved the characters and can’t wait for more of the team to have their own stories. This has a bit of romance and a lot of suspense with a lot of twists and turns. I did not want to put this book down. I was on the edge of my seat through most of this book. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Normally, I dislike when characters think they're not good enough for the person they're in love with, but in this case the author makes it such a part of the characterization that it didn't feel like a plot point used just to increase the page count. The author also doesn't let it drag on and on as some romance writers do.
This book started a bit slowly for me, and it took a little while to get into the meat of the story. I had to trust what I know of the author to know that all would make sense in time. It was nice to revisit the Dive Team characters and get to know them a bit better. I would say this book focuses a bit more on the personal histories of Sabrina Fleming and Adam Campbell. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

I remember being wowed by the first book in the series Beneath the Surface. This second book In Too Deep gets a double wow. Lynn H Blackburn spins an incredible and fast-paced romantic suspense complete with non-stop action, an intricately and tightly woven plot with gasp-worthy twists, a thought-provoking look at modern-day slavery, and wonderfully memorable characters. If you enjoy contemporary inspirational romantic suspense, this book is a must read!
In this book, we get better acquainted with Sabrina, the brainy, dedicated, and somewhat socially awkward professor of tech and cyber security and Adam, our diver team homicide investigator who comes from money and privilege. If you read the first book, you would already know that there is definite attraction brewing between these two but their story can definitely be read as a stand-alone. Adam is incredibly sweet but so insecure and hesitant because he’s never been wanted for who he is, only for his family’s name and money. Sabrina and Adam are thrown together again as Sabrina’s life becomes threatened and a homicide investigation spins out of control. Such nail-biting suspense!!
I can’t wait for Gabe’s story next. Hopefully it will be Gabe and Anissa....?

In Too Deep by Lynn H. Blackburn is the second book in her Dive Team Investigations series. The team is called in to investigate a submerged car. In the car was an encrypted laptop. They bring in Dr. Sabrina Fleming, a professor at the local university who has extraordinary computer forensics skills, to help recover the files on the laptop. What they find is a whole lot of trouble! The evidence will convict a whole lot of powerful people who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden. This was a very fast-paced story with lots of suspense, comradery, romance and danger. I enjoyed how the whole team worked and played together as a unit. Ms. Blackburn wasn’t afraid to tackle a very tough subject, and she did it quite well. The story-line and the characters worked great together. I can’t wait for the next installment.

loved being back with this team, and saying hello again to old friends, but this can be read alone, but once you devour this one you will want to read the first book in this series.
It didn’t take long to become completely immersed in this mystery, and page-turning to find answers. I changed my mind a few times as to what was going on. But loved the strong faith of the main characters, and with all that was happening and going on they lived their faith in God.
If you enjoy a really good, action packed story this is one you don’t want to miss, it also includes some really sweet romance, and love for fellow man.
I hope that there will be another book in this series!

This book is an ARC, advanced reading copy taken from uncorrected proofs. I received this copy from the publisher and agreed to review it. Library Thing Early Reviewers
Sometimes, a book can take you by surprise. For me, this is one of those books. It is compassionate, family focused and based, and at the same time some families are called upon to help others. So begins this book, but not all families are equal, except perhaps in their spiritual beliefs. Yet all things are of importance in one way or another. Although I've never been in a position or job that might require me to "leave the table" in response to work, serious though that is in this family grouping, I found myself relating in some ways from family Sunday dinners at my grandparents; (Grandpa rarely managing to get through his dinner at the crowded dining table in order and get to work, open his pharmacy, in the 1940s, and set up for customers until grandma managed to bring his evening dinner on a tray.) I know this is a distance from this book, but the book reminded me so much of those special Sundays it connected me.
All would be well, if Adam Campbell didn't work in several branches of crime investigation and other risky policing work. Adam has a good team he works with on drowning cases, and with other types of cases, his team is always ready. So many complications in this particular drowning. But who could guess what the very near future would bring besides very complicated familial problems; a brilliant woman ready to take on anything and very competently, too. Everyone seems to run into trouble at some point, but easily snap out of it and regain their concentration quickly.
One of the team's strengths comes from the power of their prayer, even with friends and acquaintances. I am impressed with the short prayers the groups focus on to strengthen their faith, their belief, and their protective system. Words, honest and true, ringing with the pace they've grown with. This book is action-packed, well coordinated, caring and strong. The story-line is good and keeps the attention. I was glued to the book, a steady read.
All these and more are focused on the prayer, believed, welcoming. Though in this book full prayers are not necessarily spoken. They are like the short springs of the season, snippets that need answering whatever the reason, I think I'm drawn more to their, love, honor, truth, especially those that suddenly jog your memory of what you were trying to convey. To me it could be welcoming, pure, and wakening me with the answer I seek. What power this family achieves, what distances they will go to be together in communication, work and connection. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

My first book in a very promising series. A cast of very interesting characters, perhaps a little bit too proficient for a sheriff''s department, but the right skill set to solve this complex mystery. Forensic skills, both scientific and business, are the keys to many of the answers they seek but why would someone wan to kill the computer nerd?
Resorting to prayers and prayer circle is somewhat disconcerting at first but does add an unusual. Support element to this investigative team and their work style. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

This is one very intense book that kept me guessing throughout the story. The author delivers a story rich in a mystery that will put people in danger. I love how the author incorporates computer technology into the story with details that remind me of shows on television.
Adam and his team are called upon to investigate a crime that leaves the team grappling for answers. Who is the mysterious woman found and what message will be discovered on her? Adam will have to call upon his friend Sabrina to help his team out. Sabrina is very intelligent and highly trained in computers. I couldn't get enough of her expertise and how accurate the author is in Sabrina's knowledge.
Sabrina is getting closer to the truth and someone out there needs to stop her. When her life is in danger, Trent steps up his protection of her. This book is one of the author's best at keeping the story interesting and action packed. Just when I thought I had figured out a part of the story, the author throws a curve that I never expected. I loved the part when Sabrina visits the victims home. I loved following her around the room as she took in every detail.
The story moves at a face pace and is filled with surprises and secrets from the past. Sabrina has not had the best relationship with her parents, especially her mother. As you delve further into the story it becomes clear that there is a much deeper secret to what the team and Sabrina is investigating. I was shocked at how sinister people can be and dysfunctional a family can become to gain power, control and cause destruction. Get ready for a powerful story that takes readers in to the depths of darkness.
I received a copy of this book from The Early Reviewers Program of Librarything. The review is my own opinion. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

I liked the first book in this series and looked forward to reading the next. I was not disappointed. It was a great read with non-stop action and suspense. The characters are likable and true-to-life.
The plot centers around Sabrina Fleming, a brilliant professor of forensics and computers. Someone is repeatedly trying to kill her, and investigator Adam Campbell has his hands full trying to keep her alive. The attacks seem connected to a murdered woman found in a car at the bottom of a lake. The two team up to solve the mystery and neither is prepared for the slave ring they uncover.
Even though In Too Deep is the second book in the series, it does fine as a stand alone novel. Readers who enjoy suspense, explosions, and light Christianity, will love this novel. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

This is the second book in a series, but each book can be read as a standalone story. I really enjoyed the suspense as they tried to solve the murder and I don't feel that the romance was overdone. I thought it was a good mystery. I wasn't crazy about the romance, but it didn't detract too much from the suspense. I enjoyed some of her other novels more. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

The story unfolds as a woman having driven off a bridge and the investigators find a note she had written on her on stomach stating she was killed and to ask Detective Adam Campbell. He has no idea why but as they investigate, they found she didn’t drown in said crash but earlier. They bring in Dr. Sabrina Fleming who is a computer forensics expert to sift through her computer. The investigation leads to human trafficking and the possibility that some of the town’s wealthy are involved. Oh, and Sabrina and Adam each have a crush on one another, go figure.
I liked the premise, which I thought would make a good suspense story. There was romance and Christianity thrown in. I am not sure why the arbitrary prayers to God were there, but it didn’t add to the plot. The romance didn’t deter from the story as there was enough going on and subplots to keep it moving. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

This is book two in the Dive Team Investigation series and is just as good as Beneath The Surface, the first book. They are both stand alone books although there is some references and interactions between characters that began in the first book. You won't be lost if you read one and not the other or out of sequence. In my opinion, the interactions between the characters adds to the contents of the story. There are some mentions of God, prayer, etc., but it's done in a tasteful manner. I look forward to reading book 3 of the series. - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5
Sep 23, 2018
This book needs to be categorized as Christian fiction. Or, to be even more accurate, Christian romantic mystery. I read it thinking it was a regular mystery thriller, and it wasn't. Normally, this wouldn't really be a big deal, but in this case it was, and I'll explain why.
The book started out with an interesting premise. A woman is found having driven off a bridge and killed. When Detective Adam Campbell and his dive team investigators are assigned to the case, they find suspicious circumstances -- it's possible the woman was actually killed before being placed in the car, and she was an accountant for a number of high-powered people. Adam's team calls in Dr. Sabrina Fleming, a cybersecurity and computer forensics expert.
Here's where things start to fall apart. First of all, Adam and Sabrina have a little history. They have been friends for a long time, but Adam has always had a thing for Sabrina and never let on, and Sabrina has always had a thing for Adam but never let on. This is all fine, no problem. But for over 100 pages, the book is basically just delving into this non-relationship relationship. I thought I was supposed to be reading a mystery thriller. The plot made almost no progress in the first 100 pages. But I was feeling generous. I realized I was actually reading a romantic mystery. Ok, I like romantic mysteries, I just had my expectations wrong. So no problem, let's keep going.
Now there are plot problems. Sabrina comes up with the wildest conclusions based on almost no evidence. She baffles those around her, and then she won't explain how she came up with her conclusions. I think the author intends for her to come across as some sort of eccentric genius (especially since she can't read people well), but it just comes across feeling preposterous. The plot feels as if it's written by someone who has zero experience in police work, computer forensics, or criminal investigation. It doesn't feel real or realistic.
Now to what I said at the beginning -- the fact that it bothers me that this is Christian fiction and not billed as such. Why did it bother me? Because the author just throws in random character thoughts about God and prayer, and it feels gratuitous, like she felt obligated to throw these things in in order to keep it Christian. Whereas other authors' books may include gratuitous sex, this book includes gratuitous "God-isms," and I find it off-putting and almost offensive. And I'm Christian. The religious references aren't preachy, but they simply don't fit, are superfluous, and should just be edited out. They disrupt the flow of the writing, so what's the point?
So with all the above problems, by the time I got to page 106 I started skimming really fast. I didn't want to read any more, but I was obligated to finish the book because I received an ARC. To be fair to the publisher and the author, I needed to read the whole thing before giving it a review. But it was difficult for me to finish; I really disliked the book, and it was all the more disappointing because it had so much potential. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

This was an excellent romantic suspense thriller. The heroine, Sabrina, is a forensic computer specialist who is highly intelligent, but socially awkward. The hero, Adam, is a police detective who is both a member of the police dive team and a specialist in white collar crime. At the start of the story, they have known each other through work for two years, and have an unacknowledged attraction to each other, that does not bloom until thrown together on this case, which deals with an accountant who died when her car (and her laptop) ended up in the river not long after she tried unsuccessfully to set up a meeting with Adam. There appear to be connections to a human trafficking ring, and the investigation leads back ultimately to both their families.
I really enjoyed this. The suspense was taut, and the budding relationship, though chaste, was believable. It was obviously the second book of a series, and I have not read the first book, but I did not feel lost. There is Christian content, which is deftly handled for the most part. Overall, a very engrossing story, and I will be seeking out book 1, and waiting for book 3.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

**Special Note: This is an ARC book that was given to me by Library Thing. All opinions expressed in this review are strictly my own.**
Lynn H. Blackburn is a new author to me. I don't recall ever reading a novel about dive team investigations, but it was great! Sabrina, Adam, Anissa, Gabe are all dynamite characters and I enjoy reading the dialogue and visualizing their interactions.
Human trafficking is a problem that we are hearing more about in our society. It is a major problem that I hope will be addressed as more people become aware of it. Too often, we just think about children being trafficked into the country as nothing more than sex slaves, but there is more to it than that.
I'm not fully certain that this book is a stand-alone novel. For starters, this is the second book of a planned series. I thought there were a couple places in the book that hinted to the first book in the series. Since I have not read the first book, I cannot honestly tell you if this is a stand-alone or not.
I will look forward to more releases from this author. If they continue to be as good as this book, I will likely be able to recommend them. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

When Aaron Campbell is called away from a family dinner to go to the scene of a car off a bridge the last thing he expected was to see his name written on the body of the deceased. An investigation begins that touches on aspects very close to home. With the help of his investigative team and Sabrina, a electronic forensic genius whom he has had feelings for for two years, the team discovers that the web of secrets tied to the woman's death reaches much farther than any of them expected.
There are some Christian elements in the book; however, it is minimal and non-preachy. This should no way be a turn off to readers. I truly enjoyed this book and enjoyed the character and storyline development.

Acknowledgments
Writing a series requires a long-term commitment from the author as well as from the men and women who’ve volunteered to help the author. There is no way I could write these stories without the input of a host of experts and the support of family and friends.
Continued gratitude to . . .
Josh Moulin, cybersecurity expert (https://JoshMoulin.com)—for answering long, disjointed emails and patiently explaining everything from hard drives to the dark web. Your willingness to answer my questions was vital to keeping this story on track. All mistakes and misrepresentations of the field are on me.
Mike Berry, Master Underwater Criminal Investigator (UCIDiver.com)—for reading my diving scenes and giving me direction on everything from safely removing a vehicle to how to find a briefcase and detailing which type of search pattern works best. Any mistakes in diving and underwater criminal investigation procedures are mine.
Jonathan Parker, director of city involvement at Fellowship Greenville—your insights into the labor trafficking in my own city and on the streets where I shop and work were crucial to the storyline and have had a permanent impact on the way I see the world I’m living in. Our conversation left me heartbroken, and my prayer is that eyes will be opened and these precious souls will be seen and freed.
Investigator Tim Martin—for explaining the world of white-collar criminal investigations to me and for helping me bring Adam to life in a realistic way.
Sergeant Chris Hammett—for your insights into the life of a homicide investigator and your gracious explanations of police procedures. Thank you for continuing to answer my emails!
Jennifer Huggins Bayne—my sister and favorite nurse practitioner for once again replying to countless texts about hospital procedures and setting me straight about CTs and MRIs and how fast you can get out of the ED. Your patients are blessed to have you advocating for them. And I’m eternally grateful to have you as my sister and my friend.
Mecina Hapthey and Angelina Zimmer—thank you for your insights into Yapese culture and the life of a missionary family. Anissa’s character wouldn’t exist without you.
Angel Glover—for sharing your experiences and helping me find a layer of complexity that Leigh was missing before your input.
My critique group—for helping me brainstorm this series. The storylines and characters are all richer because of you.
My sisters of The Light Brigade—you’ve been there for me from the beginning. Your prayers, love, and support are never more than a Facebook message away and I am eternally grateful for you.
Lynette Eason—for believing in me and giving the Carrington dive team such a fun case in one of your books!
Tamela Hancock Murray—my amazing agent. Thank you for your enthusiastic support and continued encouragement.
Andrea Doering—for saying yes to this series and to the crossover idea.
Amy Ballor—for editing this manuscript with an attention to detail that is both terrifying and thrilling.
Sandra Blackburn—for being the most supportive mother-in-law a girl could have and for being willing to do anything to help.
Ken and Susan Huggins—for being the kind of parents who taught me to work hard and love books and for still being there for me whenever I need you. Which is all the time!
Emma, James, and Drew—for still being excited about every new book and for continuing to keep my real world far more interesting than any I could make up.
Brian—without you there would be no stories with my name on them. My imagination never would have taken flight without your encouragement and your continual support and love.
My Savior—the Ultimate Storyteller—for allowing me to write stories for you.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heartbe acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

ch-figThe shrill ping of his cell phone earned white-collar crimes investigator Adam Campbell a vicious glare from his aunt Margaret. His cousins all dropped their gazes to their plates, several of them failing to suppress snickers, as Adam stood. He glanced around the table at the assembled family members before focusing on the matriarch of the family. Excuse me, Grandmother. Everyone. I’m on call.
Grandmother sniffed. Very well.
Conversation resumed as Adam made his way around the perimeter of the oval dining room. He refused to look down or run like a frightened schoolboy. He maintained a measured pace and made eye contact with anyone who bothered to look in his direction. He had nothing to be ashamed of.
His parents were in Italy until Thursday, or his mother would have given him an encouraging smile. Oh well.
No one glared at his brother when he was on call. Grandmother never batted an eye when Alexander needed to miss Sunday lunch because he was in surgery. But heaven forbid Adam miss the monthly meal. Keeping the citizens of Carrington, North Carolina, safe was a perfectly good job as far as Grandmother was concerned. But not for a Campbell.
Grandfather Campbell caught his eye.
And winked.
Adam didn’t bother trying to hide his smile as he left the room. His grandfather was a rock. They met for breakfast at least once a week at the Pancake Hut, and Adam regaled him with stories from the sheriff’s office.
The restaurant was a favorite with the law enforcement and medical communities in Carrington, and Adam’s standing breakfast date with his grandfather had gotten a lot of attention when he first joined the force.
The Pancake Hut wasn’t the kind of place the Campbell family usually frequented.
As Charles Campbell made it a point to get to know Adam’s co-workers by name, Adam’s fellow deputies soon realized he might be worth several billion dollars, but he was no snob.
It was a poorly kept secret that Charles Campbell was in the habit of picking up the tab for every law enforcement officer in the Pancake Hut whenever he was there—whether or not he was with Adam.
Grandmother wasn’t exactly aware of that arrangement.
Before long, deputies and investigators started coming by Adam’s desk and saying, Yo, Campbell, I’ve got one for your grandfather. He’ll get a kick out of this.
Or they’d stop by their booth and share something that had happened while they were on patrol.
Grandfather ate it up.
Over the last few years, Grandfather had managed to fund several scholarships for law enforcement officers, and he’d fallen completely under the spell of homicide investigator Anissa Bell, captain of the Carrington County Sheriff’s Office dive team. All Anissa had to do was hint that she’d been eyeing some new piece of equipment for the team and Grandfather made it happen.
Grandmother wasn’t exactly aware of that arrangement either.
Adam paused in the hallway and looked again at the text that had saved him from another hour of family politics.
Uh-oh. He walked briskly as he maneuvered his way through the library and music room and then hit the marble floor of the large foyer.
Everything okay, Mr. Adam?
The concerned words from the family’s longtime butler slowed his steps.
Not really, Marcel. A car ran off the highway and over the embankment at the double bridges. Probably last night. A boater found the car this morning.
The double bridges spanned Lake Porter and connected the tourist side of the lake to the city of Carrington. The car would have gone close to a hundred yards over bumpy terrain next to the bridge approach before plunging into the water.
Failed brakes?
Road rage?
Suicide?
It had happened before.
Was someone in the car?
Marcel asked the question in a low voice.
When Adam nodded in the affirmative, Marcel shook his head in dismay.
Adam’s family, and Marcel was family, had come unglued when a car accident took Adam’s younger brother, Aaron, at the far-too-young age of ten. None of them had ever completely gotten over it.
You going to have to get in? It’s cold.
Marcel handed Adam his coat.
We have dry suits,
Adam said. We’ll be okay.
Be careful, sir.
Marcel opened the door, and Adam broke into a jog. Thanks, Marcel. Hold the fort.
Marcel’s low chuckle reached his ears as he slid behind the wheel and took the turns of the lengthy driveway at a speed that would have gotten him on Grandmother’s bad list, if he hadn’t already been there.
It took fifteen minutes to reach the double bridges. The bridges had a formal name—after a local politician from the thirties—but no one used it.
He slowed as he approached the roadblock, then pulled in behind fellow dive team member and homicide investigator Gabe Chavez. Gabe climbed out first and met him at the door, giving a low whistle as he looked the Audi over. When you gonna let me drive this baby?
This was why he tried not to drive his personal vehicle to crime scenes, but sometimes he didn’t have a choice. Grandmother had given him the car for his college graduation—even though he had told her he didn’t need it—and she didn’t approve of him arriving for Sunday lunch in the unmarked sedan he drove for work.
He held the keys out to Gabe. Any time.
Gabe eyed the keys, longing evident on his face. One of these days I’m going to take you up on it.
Adam pulled his bag out of the back, locked the car, and pocketed the keys. He glanced at the line of cars on the side of the road. Who else is here?
Ryan is hiking in the mountains with Leigh,
Gabe said. Homicide investigator Ryan Parker was the second-in-command on the dive team. His girlfriend, Leigh Weston, had survived an attack by a serial killer last spring.
Hiking? Or proposing?
Gabe grinned. I guess we’ll find out when they get back. He got the text about this, but Anissa told him to disregard it.
You’ve talked to Anissa?
Gabe and Anissa hadn’t gotten along well since she’d kicked him off the dive team a few years ago when his undercover work had repeatedly kept him from making it to training dives. But since he’d come back to Homicide, and since two of their divers had left the team—one for medical reasons and another for retirement—she’d been encouraged to allow him back. Their relationship remained strained, but since the serial-killer case involving Leigh last spring, the tension between them had eased.
Slightly.
Yeah. I talked to her. She bit my head off for being on the wrong side of town and told me to hurry up because she and Lane were already on the scene.
She didn’t call me,
Adam said.
Gabe smirked. "Man, it’s the second Sunday of the month. We all knew where you were."
Adam bit back a retort. He loved his family. He really did. Some of them were awesome. Some of them weren’t. Same as most families, he imagined. And a sight better than a lot of the families he’d seen while working in the uniformed division. Even Grandmother’s disapproval, which irked him to no end, was part of her way of showing love.
At least Grandfather said it was. He said she worried over her grandson far more than her frosty demeanor indicated.
Gabe punched his arm. Don’t worry about it, man. This is an evidence-recovery situation. Nothing we could have done for the victim even if we’d been sitting in the water waiting on the car.
How do you know?
The guy who found her said he was out here around lunchtime and saw the car. Dove in and pulled the body out. Probably destroyed a ton of evidence. He said she was limp in her seatbelt, but he thought maybe she was just unconscious. After he got her to shore, his take on it was that her neck was broken.
Adam fought the image Gabe’s words created in his mind. He was sorry for the victim. Horrified at the manner of death, whether it had been a dreadful accident or a successful suicide attempt. But he wasn’t sorry he wouldn’t have to be the one to pull her body from the water.
He scrambled down the incline to the waterline. There would be no need for any of their fancy sonar equipment on this case. He could see the car from the edge of the lake. Dive team captain and homicide investigator Anissa Bell and Deputy Lane Edwards were in dry suits, checking tanks and gauges.
’Bout time,
Anissa said. We’re shorthanded. Chavez, sketch the scene. Campbell, get suited up for backup, but you’re on topside evidence. Get the path of the car, etcetera. I want all of it documented before we pull the car out and contaminate the scene.
Anissa pointed to a makeshift changing area—a couple of tarps tied up between a few trees. And be quick. We don’t want to run out of daylight.
Yes, ma’am,
Adam said.
Gabe glared at Anissa for a second before grabbing a sketch pad and getting to work. She thinks she’s being mean, but I didn’t want to get wet today anyway.
Adam didn’t bother responding to Gabe’s mutterings. Partly because he wasn’t so sure Anissa had been trying to be mean. As far as he was concerned, she’d given the worst job to him. It took him fifteen minutes to change out of his clothes, get into the dry suit, and prep his own tanks and gauges so he had everything ready if Anissa or Lane required assistance.
He tried to ignore the shrouded body near the water’s edge. They couldn’t do anything about the evidence destroyed by the man who’d jumped in the lake and tried to save the victim. Even after he was sure she was dead, he’d gone down repeatedly until he freed her and pulled her body to the surface.
Adam focused on the work Anissa and Lane were doing in the water, prepping the car to be retrieved. The car was in water shallow enough that they didn’t need lift bags to float it to the surface. They would be able to tow it out of the water with a wrecker.
Anissa was using this as an opportunity for Lane to be the rigger—he would wrap a chain around the car’s axle a few times and then stretch the chain to the shore, where it would be hooked to a tow truck. Anissa was acting as the safety, observing everything and ready to assist if Lane needed it.
Adam.
Anissa’s voice came through the earpiece he was wearing. You might as well go ahead and call Sabrina.
Dr. Sabrina Fleming was a local professor of cybersecurity and computer forensics.
What did you find?
Adam asked.
A laptop.
The Carrington County Sheriff’s Office had a wonderful forensics team, and they did great work, but Sabrina had a lab filled with all the latest equipment as well as everything that would be needed to attempt to pull any information from the waterlogged computer.
I’ll send her a text now.
Adam retrieved his phone from his bag. He didn’t need to look her up in his contacts. He had her number memorized.
She responded immediately.
Anissa,
Adam said, she can come now. How long will it be before you bring it up?
Underwater criminal investigators never removed anything from the water. The laptop would need to be placed in a special box filled with lake water. Recovering anything from the hard drive was actually harder if it dried out improperly.
Tell her to come on,
Anissa said. We’ll have it ready.
Adam fought the grin that tried to cross his lips. This wasn’t the time for it. Someone had died. But at least he’d get to see Sabrina this afternoon.
A shower of gravel drew his attention to the steep incline surrounding him. He gave Dr. Sharon Oliver, medical examiner, a nod as she inched her way down the embankment to the body. Weren’t you on call last weekend?
he asked her.
She let out a huff as she set her bag down beside the body. I was. And I will be on call for the next two weeks while Dr. Sherman enjoys his thirty-fifth anniversary by traipsing all over Europe.
Adam laughed. She sounded put out, but he knew she wasn’t. You’re just jealous.
She flashed him a wicked grin. You got that right.
All right, honey,
she said, addressing the victim. Let’s see what you can tell me, and then let’s get you away from prying eyes.
Gabe approached the body and snapped pictures as Dr. Oliver examined it. I assume you’re talking about our hovering friends?
He glared at the heavens, where a news helicopter was circling.
Indeed,
she said.
Adam studied the surface of the water, thankful he had an excuse to look away from the body.
But Gabe’s low whistle was hard to disregard.
Um, Campbell?
Adam tried to ignore Gabe, but he didn’t want to be unprofessional. What?
He didn’t turn.
You may want to see this.
Jerk. Gabe knew how he felt about dead bodies. Everyone knew. He couldn’t look at one without seeing Aaron. I’m watching Anissa and—
Adam.
Gabe’s tone was . . . off. What was going on?
He kept his eyes on the water but backed toward the body. What is it?
Gabe clapped a hand on his back. I’ll watch the water. You need to talk to the doc.
Wha—
Gabe shook his head and then nodded toward the body.
Adam made eye contact with the doctor. She pointed to the victim. Why were they so insistent that he look at a dead body?
Fine.
Lord, help me.
He glanced at the victim.
Then stared.
There, written in permanent marker on the victim’s abdomen, were six words.
They killed me. Ask Adam Campbell.
dividerSabrina slowed her MINI Cooper as she neared the police barricade at the double bridges over Lake Porter. A young deputy, hand raised, approached her car.
I’m sorry, ma’am. You’ll need to follow the detour signs and go around.
She handed him a business card. Investigator Campbell called me,
she said. Where was Adam? He was always so courteous. She couldn’t remember a time when he hadn’t met her at the police barricade and escorted her through.
Technically, she didn’t need to collect the evidence. This dive team knew what they were doing. She’d never received evidence from them that hadn’t been properly handled. No laptops in plastic bags. No flash drives in Styrofoam. No one ever took a hair dryer and tried to dry out a cell phone before sending it her way.
She could trust them. She did trust them.
She also liked them.
A lot.
Some more than others.
Her friend list was short. When she added people to it, she made it a point to try to keep them there. And it was always a good idea to help out your friends. That’s why she’d jumped at the chance to pick up the laptop. At least, that was her story and she was sticking to it.
The deputy smiled. Give me a minute, ma’am.
He ducked under the police tape and signaled to someone. A few moments later Gabe Chavez appeared on the other side of the tape and waved for her to come through.
She fought the disappointment that Adam didn’t greet her, pasted on a smile, and nodded.
The deputy returned and showed her where to park her car, then he escorted her to where Gabe stood, arms crossed.
Hi, Doc. Sorry to bother you on a Sunday.
Gabe gave her a tight smile.
It’s no problem.
She couldn’t stop her eyes from scanning the scene below. Where was Adam? Was he under the water?
You want to scramble down there? Or would you rather me bring the box up to you? I don’t mind,
Gabe said.
I’ll come down if that’s okay,
she said.
Sure thing. Be careful. It’s steep.
She eased her way down the side of the hill.
At least you’re dressed for it,
Gabe said as they made their descent. Nice shirt. I haven’t seen that one. Is it new?
This was one of the things she liked about the dive team. They didn’t give her grief about her standard uniform—superhero T-shirts with skinny jeans and Converse tennis shoes. Old. I’ve had it about ten years,
she said.
Cool. Pretty boy showed up dressed for church. Probably ruined his expensive shoes.
Sabrina ignored the pretty boy comment. She hadn’t been too sure about Gabe when she first met him earlier this year. She’d bristled each time he’d made a snide remark about one of his co-workers. It had taken a while, but she’d finally realized many of his comments were meant as jokes and had no malice behind them. Adam liked Gabe and enjoyed working with him, so that was good enough for her.
Sunday lunch with the family?
Sabrina asked.
Yep.
Poor Adam. He had a love-hate relationship with those lunches. Loved the people. Hated the drama.
Is he in the water?
She tried to keep the question light. It wasn’t unreasonable for her to ask, especially since Adam had called her.
Um, no.
At Gabe’s words, she stopped watching her feet and looked at him. She should have picked up on it before now. Gabe was not his usual jovial self. For Gabe, he was almost . . . serious.
Is he okay?
Again, she tried to keep the question professional in tone. But based on the way Gabe’s eyebrows shot up, she must not have succeeded.
Depends on your definition of okay,
he said. Physically, he’s fine. Hasn’t even been in the water.
They’d reached the bottom of the incline, and Sabrina paused to take it all in. The medical examiner hovered over a body to her left. The dive team van was parked near the shore—they must have driven down here on the service road the utility companies used. Two divers bobbed around the car.
But still no Adam.
Gabe tilted his head to the left and she looked beyond the body.
There he was.
Adam paced along the edge of the lake in the direction of the double bridges.
Nothing about this made any sense.
Dare I ask?
This time her words were a mere whisper.
I’m the lead investigator on the homicide, and under normal circumstances there wouldn’t be much I could say. But there’s been a development I’m going to need to share with you because you need to know what you’re dealing with when you start working on that laptop.
Gabe motioned for her to follow him toward the medical examiner.
This was getting weirder by the second.
They stopped a few feet away from the body. Dr. Oliver, have you met Dr. Fleming?
Gabe’s formal introduction caught Sabrina by surprise.
Dr. Oliver stood. I’d shake your hand, but—
She indicated her gloved hands. I don’t know if we’ve met in an official capacity or not, but I’ve heard wonderful things about you, Dr. Fleming. I’m Sharon.
Likewise. And I’m Sabrina.
I’d like Sabrina to see what you showed us a little while ago,
Gabe said to Dr. Oliver. She’ll be the one trying to recover anything we can get off the laptop, and while we intend to keep this little piece of evidence out of the press, I think it’s important for her to be aware of it. I trust her implicitly.
Sharon regarded Sabrina with a speculative look. Have you ever seen a dead body?
Why on earth did they want her to look at this poor victim? Sabrina swallowed hard. I have,
she said.
You won’t pass out?
Sharon pressed.
I will not.
Sabrina wasn’t offended by the question. Sharon Oliver had no idea the kinds of things Sabrina had seen. She got no pleasure from viewing this poor victim’s body, but there was no way it would replace the stuff of her nightmares.
Sharon pulled the sheet away from the body. A woman. Probably in her late forties to early fifties. Pixie-cut hair. Something about her looked familiar.
Why was she lifting the woman’s shirt?
As the words written on the victim’s abdomen came into focus, Sabrina blinked a couple of times and then knelt closer. She didn’t say anything. She didn’t want to risk anyone overhearing, although no one stood within twenty feet of them.
She straightened and tried to process it.
They killed me. Ask Adam Campbell.
She took a closer look at the victim’s face.
No. It couldn’t be. Do you have a name yet?
she asked Gabe.
Yeah,
he said. Her name is Lisa Palmer. She’s an—
Accountant,
Sabrina said.
Do you know her?
Gabe asked.
Only by reputation.
Who had killed her? Why? And what did Adam know about it?
What can you tell me about her?
Gabe asked.
Not much,
Sabrina answered. She was my father’s accountant. I saw her leaving the house once. I never met her.
"Was your father’s accountant? Gabe frowned.
Did he fire her?"
No. He died.
A deputy called Gabe’s name and waved for him to come up to the road.
Gabe pointed at her. We’re not done.
Awesome. Her mind spiraled through the possible ramifications. All her family’s secrets part of the public record. Adam would find out . . .
I’ll be back to get your statement.
Fine.
She pointed to Adam. "Can I go talk to him while
