About this audiobook
Praised as "deeply affecting" and "heartbreaking" by The Guardian (UK), this is a faithful adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout's bestselling novel of the same name.
Unsteady after an operation, Lucy Barton wakes to find her mother sitting at the foot of her bed. She hasn't seen her in years, and her visit brings back to Lucy her desperate rural childhood, and her escape to New York. As she begins to find herself as a writer, she is still gripped by the urgent complexities of family life.
Published as the play comes to Broadway after a highly-acclaimed UK run in 2018, this is a unique opportunity to hear Laura Linney's "simply superb" (The Times UK) performance of this haunting, dramatic monologue.
MY NAME IS LUCY BARTON was originally produced by Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr for the London Theater Company at the Bridge Theatre in June 2018. Produced on Broadway by the Manhattan Theater Club, Lynne Meadow, Artistic Director, Barry Grove, Executive Producer and The London Theater Company, in association with Penguin Random House Audio.

The story of Lucy seems simple because the way it is written is swift and dynamic; however, it is a life full of emotions, many of them repressed; truths that leave a mark, sometimes with a lot of pain. Lucy learned to be strong, to be a writer, unfortunately, alone. Her life, her disappointments make the story merely the testimony of a great strength that sometimes seems like resignation. A small novel of great emotional intensity. A mother and an adult daughter, in the present, but invaded by the violence and ferocity of a distant past that imposes its fears, barriers, and silences. A final attempt to save the love that binds them above resentment and pain. (Translated from Spanish) - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5

Although the plot seemed interesting to me, when I started reading it, I found it to be a very chaotic book. Many jumps, without order, unfinished stories, characters that appear and disappear... With 200 pages, it felt to me like it had 500. It’s a book that didn’t resonate with me and didn’t give me anything. (Translated from Spanish) - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Narrated in the first person, the author dissects her relationships with her family, with her schoolmates, and in particular, with her mother, the only family member who visits her during her long stay in the hospital. We will witness sparse dialogues between the two women, brief in words but rich in emotional content. I consider it one of Strout's good works. (Translated from Spanish) - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

Do not seek God in churches; He has long fled from them through a little door that leads to the world. (Translated from Spanish) - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Simple and quick to read. It's the story of a family, disjointed, with arguments, with resentments. If you like novels that delve into the mother/daughter relationship, you're sure to enjoy it. I found the process the protagonist goes through to forgive her mother particularly interesting, and on the other hand, how the pain of the parents is reflected when she leaves the family home. It’s a bit slow to read, but it contains very beautiful reflections and situations that you might find strangely relatable if you have experienced something similar. It’s not one of my favorites, but it hasn’t left me indifferent either. (Translated from Spanish)
