About this audiobook

From the #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author of Daughters of the Lake comes an enthralling spellbinder of love, death, and a woman on the edge.

After a devastating loss, Brynn Wilder escapes to Wharton, a tourist town on Lake Superior, to reset. Checking into a quaint boardinghouse for the summer, she hopes to put her life into perspective. In her fellow lodgers, she finds a friendly company of strangers: the frail Alice, cared for by a married couple with a heartbreaking story of their own; LuAnn, the eccentric and lovable owner of the inn; and Dominic, an unsettlingly handsome man inked from head to toe in mesmerizing tattoos.

But in this inviting refuge, where a century of souls has passed, a mystery begins to swirl. Alice knows things about Brynn, about all of them, that she shouldn’t. Bad dreams and night whispers lure Brynn to a shuttered room at the end of the hall, a room still heavy with a recent death. And now she’s become irresistibly drawn to Dominic—even in the shadow of rumors that wherever he goes, suspicious death follows.

In this chilling season of love, transformation, and fear, something is calling for Brynn. To settle her past, she may have no choice but to answer.

This was not what I expected. From the title and the cover, it feels like it would be haunting type of ghost story. It had tinges of that but this isn't a typical ghost story. This is also about love, grief, loss, moving on and finding your way back home again.

I really enjoyed this one and definitely recommend.

The author lost me when she started getting political about healthcare, spewing out half truths, misunderstandings, and even dangerous information about the system. Also, just overall kind of boring. The premise was good, but it just got muddied and didn’t keep my attention. In fact, I fell asleep for a couple of hours while listening to it; when I listened to the parts I slept through previously, I felt like I hadn’t really missed anything.

One of the most beautiful, sweet, loving, heartbreaking (but also inspiring) book I’ve read in a long time. It will grip your heart from the beginning and not let go until the last page is finished. Read it. You will be glad you did.

I can't choose a favorite part of this book. This is the second story of Wendy Webb that I have listened to and I am looking forward to the next. I love how she merges time and souls together. Loved this!

Truly disappointing. We read this book in our book club and figured we were safe with "the haunting of" for Halloween/spooky month! Nope. Also, it's super predictable. There was one wow factor, but it literally did not make sense (my wow was from the fact that it really did not make sense). Also, I would definitely not classify this as horror or thriller it's really just a romance (even barely this) with some paranormal aspects.

It's an okay book. I did lose count of how many times the author says "I let go of a breath I didn't know I was holding ".

I’m a little over half way through the book and I don’t know if I can finish it. I usually really like Wendy Webb, but the narrator is not doing a good job of bringing this book to life. I probably need to read it to judge the book for myself. Anyway, not too come down too harshly on the narrator, but she would be much better off in an androgynous role. For example, being one of multiple narrators in which her role is a deadpan scientist.
