During numerous such time-defying episodes with the same young man, she realizes the challenge she's been given: to protect this young slaveholder until he can father her own great-grandmother. Author Octavia E. Butler skillfully juxtaposes the serious issues of slavery, human rights, and racial prejudice with an exciting science fiction, romance, and historical adventure.     Octavia Estelle Butler (1947–2006), often referred to as the “grand dame of science fiction,” was born in Pasadena, California, on June 22, 1947. She received an Associate of Arts degree in 1968 from Pasadena City College, and also attended California State University in Los Angeles and the University of California, Los Angeles. Butler was the first science-fiction writer to win a MacArthur Fellowship (“genius” grant). She won the PEN Lifetime Achievement Award and the Nebula and Hugo Awards, among others. Her books include Wildseed, Imago, and Parable of the Sower.

      This book is simply amazing, it’s a must read! I’m still in deep thought, I can still feel the tears and confusion left in my gut. This is amazing, definitely a thinker and definitely shifts the perspective and understanding of slavery and the psychology of slavery

      The foundation of the book as a whole is solid, but I ruined it by watching the television series (some added parts I like- i.e., her mother being a traveler, also) before reading the book.

      This audio book was incredibly hard to listen to. I don't know if a book has ever made me angrier. But it also made me incredibly sad for humanity. It was very well written. But not for thr faint of heart.

      I'm not really into Sci-Fi and I was nervous about the back and forth between past and present. However, I was wrong, this book was amazing and engaging. Very frustrating at times as well.

      I loved this book. The characters were so well-developed. It was not an easy read due to the sheer cruelty of humans, but there were also tender moments & incredible perseverance & courage. I was interested the entire time & couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next!

      This is one of my favorite stories. The difficult situations slaves faced in order to just survive, let alone live are incredible as well as difficult to imagine. This story really makes you think

      I actually watched the series before listening to the audiobook and I must say the movie was poorly done. I enjoyed listening to the book, Kim Staunton is good at what she does.

      Octavia Butler did a good job educating us about what went on during the days of slavery, how each choice made as a slave has a repercussions and the life led as a black person and as a white person. Being a woman, white supremacy etc

      I very, very rarely give up on books but after 3.5hrs I really can’t justify continuing. What should be a dark and compelling insight into a very dark time is instead light hearted, absurd and ridiculous… perhaps it would be appropriate for young adults but for adults it makes slavery seem like it was simply a side effect of ignorance.
      The narrator is decent but would be better suited for children. Her character range is limited making it harder to separate point of views.

      So beautifully written, also as English is my second language I greatly enjoyed the performance on the southern accent that I wasn't familiar with. Heartbreaking, but very interesting considered that is a 70' book.
