Reading the ending
West, unenchanted with his collection, led the eight of Hearts in response to his partner’s don’t-lead-what-you-were-going-to double. Declarer ducked this to East’s King, winning the continuation with the Queen.
Establishing his Clubs would involve losing the lead twice – East’s Hearts would be good by then – so declarer instead crossed to the ten of Spades and led a low Diamond to the Knave.
