Music at Emanu El

Join us for the third season of MUSIC AT EMANU EL, where we’ll explore Jewish music in America—from Klezmer to Big Band to Yiddish showstoppers. This season promises musical guests who bring phenomenal voices, insightful teachings, and transformational spiritual leadership. Building on the new partnerships forged in our first two seasons, we’ll continue to expand our connections both within the Houston community and beyond.

GOT THAT SWING: CELEBRATING JEWISH AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN BIG BAND GREATS

Heading into MLK weekend, step back into the glamorous era of swing for a night of big band music, dancing, desserts, and drinks! Experience the influence of jazz legends: Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington and Count Basie performed by Phillip Hall (piano), Ernesto Vega (sax), Erin Wright (bass), and Cantor Rollin Simmons (vocals), along with their swingin’ big band.

AN AFTERNOON OF KLEZMER
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 23

2:00 p.m. Experience behind-the-scenes learning as Klezmer Conservatory of Music Founder/Director Hankus Netsky and composer/performer Eden MacAdam-Somer lead a master class workshop in ‘oral tradition’ with Shepherd School students.

Join Cantor Simmons and her extraordinary cantor colleagues, Josh Breitzer, Arik Luck and Shira Ginsburg as we explore the Jewish experience in America, through the genres of Yiddish and American musical theater, folk music, art song, and more.

To Yearn & Return: Elul Sacred Sounds with Eliana Light
We joined together with other Houston congregations (HCRJ, Sh’ma Koleinu, and Temple Sinai) to start the month of Elul, the month leading up to the High Holy Days, in soulful song. We filled the Proler chapel with our voices, as Eliana taught us and helped us prepare our spirits for the Days of Awe ahead.
