Dave Hughes set to 'take over the Triple M Melbourne breakfast shift' alongside Kate Langbroek after his Hughesy, Ed & Erin show was axed

Dave Hughes may be headed to Triple M Melbourne to take over the breakfast shift after the Hughesy, Ed & Erin breakfast show came to an end amid spiralling ratings.

The comedian looks primed to take over the slot in 2025 after Marty Sheargold quit this year, according to a new report.

And Hughes may be taking his former co-star Kate Langbroek along with him after their success as a team at Nova, KIIS and the Hit Network, the Herald Sun reported on Friday.

The pair are being courted for the role, the paper claims, however SCA Chief Content Officer, Dave Cameron, said this week that the future is unclear.

'We have not made a decision on what 2025 looks like in regards to Triple M Melbourne at this stage' he said.

It comes admid growing speculation that one of the deciding factors for the axing of the Hughesy, Ed & Erin show was host Hughes' unwillingness to move interstate permanently.

The 53-year-old was commuting from his home in Melbourne to host the 2Day FM breakfast show, which is recorded in Sydney.

According to News.com.au, 2Day FM bosses had been pressuring the radio star to relocate to the Harbour City but his wife Holly had become frustrated with his commute and wanted him to spend more time in Melbourne.

Insiders have suggested Hughes told executives at Southern Cross Austereo (the network that owns 2Day FM) that he would not be moving and therefore couldn't agree to another year on the breakfast show.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Hughes for comment.

The program hosted by Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan, also suffered a mere 3.6 per cent market share in the last ratings survey.

2Day FM announced the axing on Wednesday evening, informing listeners that they've opted to pull the plug on the show and replace it with night shift  larrikins Jimmy Smith and Nath Roye, who currently host The Jimmy and Nath Show.

'We've loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast, however, due to some of our families living in different cities we are unable to commit to 2025, so with a heavy heart we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward in Breakfast,' Hughsey, Ed and Erin said in a statement.

'We are so grateful to Sydney for their support, and to double the number of listeners in three years is something we are immensely proud of, and we will miss each and every one of them.'

Southern Cross Austereo went on to thank the radio hosts for their 'passion and commitment' following the announcement.

'We are incredibly thankful to Hughesy, Ed and Erin for their unwavering dedication in making the 2DayFM Breakfast show a fun way to wake up Sydney each morning since 2020, and we wish them the very best with the continuation of their outstanding careers,' said SCA Chief Content Officer, Dave Cameron.

The announcement follows rumours Hughes is getting set to reunite with Langbroek, 58, to reboot their popular Hughesy and Kate show.

The pair last hosted Hit FM's popular show in 2019, before Langbroek took a step back from the program to move to Italy.

Meanwhile, Hughes recently did a guest spot on Triple M's The Rush Hour in Melbourne which was a big hit with listeners.

Hughes and Langbroek first teamed together in 2001 for Nova 100's Melbourne breakfast show.

Langbroek currently co-hosts the popular podcast The Buck Up with Nath Valvo after leaving her last commercial radio gig on KIIS FM The Pick Up two years ago.

She teased a potential radio reunion with Hughes last year.

'We're full of love for each other and nothing is off the table for us,' she told the Herald Sun last August.
