The first trailer for the movie detailing the first episode of Saturday Night Live has been released, and offers a glimpse at the drama and chaos that preceded one of the most iconic shows in US history.

Saturday Night is based on the true story of what happened in the 90 minutes leading up to the very first episode of the NBC sketch show back in 1975, and the chaos that proceded that famous introduction that's now known by millions.

The trailer shows SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle) fighting with channel bosses to get the series off the ground, but standing in his way are a string of fighting casts members and studio executives. 

At one point Michaels passionately yells: 'NBC is lucky enough to have something as relevant as this show!' 

As the zany stars prepare for their debut on the show, NBC executive Dick Ebersol (Cooper Hoffman), warns: 'Ninety-minutes of live television by a group of 20-year-olds who have never made anything.

The very first episode of Saturday Night Live was famously broadcast on October 11, 1975, and was hosted by comedian George Carlin and featured musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian. 

Also appearing in the first episode were Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Michael O'Donoghue and Gilda Radner.

The trailer ends with Michaels declaring: 'We just have to make it to air,' as the seconds count down that famous introduction...

Ella Hunt will portray the late Gilda Radner along with Emily Fairn as Laraine Newman and Kim Matula as Jane Curtin.

LaBelle best known for his role as budding filmmaker Sammy in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans, will portray creator and producer Michaels.

Nicholas Braun of Succession fame will take on the role of legendary puppeteer Jim Henson. He and The Muppets were part of the cast in the first year of the groundbreaking sketch comedy show.

Fargo and New Girl star Lamorne Morris will portray funnyman Garrett Morris, who was the show's first Black actor, while Finn Wolfhard plays Mike Wheeler, who is tasked with trying to entice viewers into the audience.

Dylan O'Brien who took on the action in Teen Wolf and Maze Runner will tackle the role of chameleon Dan Ackroyd who imitated presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter along with cooking show host Julia Child.

Ackroyd's fellow Blues Brother, the late John Belushi, will be portrayed by singer and actor Matt Wood. This will be the young star's first major motion picture.

Nicholas Podany will take on the role of legendary comedian Billy Crystal.

Speaking about the film, Jason recently told Vanity Fair: 'It's a thriller-comedy, if you can call that a genre. I always describe this movie as a shuttle launch, and the question was, ''Would they break orbit?'' 

Reitman co-wrote the script for SNL 1975 with Gil Kenan, based on interviews conducted with original cast members who were part of the original inception of the variety show.

The director's late father, Ivan Reitman, was involved in the first episode of SNL when the show debuted in October 1975.

He later collaborated with Belushi on Animal House and with Ackroyd and Bill Murray, who joined the cast in 1977, on the hit comedy Ghostbusters.

The film is set to be released in cinemas on October 11, exactly 49 years to the day since SNL's first episode was broadcast.

Since the series' inception, some of the biggest names in comedy have kickstarted their careers on the programme, including Jason Sudeikis, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Bill Murray, Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig.

More recently, Hollywood stars typically line up for the chance to host the weekly show, wth recent names including Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Gosling, Dua Lipa, Emma Stone, Pete Davidson, Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson.
