The Umbrella Academy fans 'want to cry, scream and throw up' after watching 'nauseating' age gap love scenes in the final season of the hit Netflix show.

Viewers were left so shocked by the new relationship that they have even demanded an apology from the show's creator.

The sci-fi drama series, starring Elliot Page, follows a group of disbanded superheroes who reunited after their adoptive father Sir Reginald Hargreaves' death.

The final season sees the Hargreaves siblings all separated after their timeline was reset. Now devoid of their powers, they are each left to their own human devices to survive, though they must come together one last time to stop a mysterious group known only as The Keepers.

In the fourth season, Five, played by Aidan Gallagher, 20, and Lila, played by Ritu Arya, 35, become trapped in a seven-year loop of time travel travel as they fight to get home.

Lila, who is married with children to Five's adoptive brother Diego (David Castañeda), embarks on a romantic relationship with her time-travelling companion, who is not what he seems.

In the very first season, Five is 13 years old but, as a teleporter, he becomes stuck in a post-apocalyptic future for decades.

By the time he is reunited with his family he is in fact 64 years old, but stuck inside the body of an 18 year old.

However, fans were left confused by the directorial decision to cast the pair in a romantic light considering the confusing age dynamics.

Viewers were quick to point out that Lila enters into a sexual relationship with Five despite first meeting him as a child, not to mention the fact that she already has a family with his brother.

Although the fans might have been able to stomach the idea of their relationship, many were disgusted to find out that they had shared several kisses and even had sex as part of the storyline.

'I just... can't with that Lila/ Five stuff. I really can't - why are they doing that. I wanna cry and throw up and scream and unsee that,' one user wrote on X.

Another fan of the show said:'Five and Lila are in love and I feel a little nauseous,.'

While a third demanded an apology and wrote: 'We need an apology from The Umbrella Academy writers for whatever that atrocity is between Five and Lila… I'm cringing so hard right now.'

Several fans explained on social media that they would have been happy if Five and Lila had simply ended up best friends, rather than lovers adding that Lila and her husband's dynamic seemed perfect in earlier seasons.

Fans took to X and one said: 'I cannot BELIEVE the storyline with Five and Lila … not one person asked for it so why did it happen? Honestly ruined the show for me. I'm devastated.'

Another wrote: 'The writers were so desperate to create a ship for Five with Lila that they chose to forget and change all about their past just to fit into their ridiculous NEW narrative.'

The show's creator Steve Blackman made the creative decision knowing it could divide fans.

Speaking to Netflix, he said: 'I felt that Five had to have a love story. I mean, he's a 64-year-old man in the body of an 18-year-old. So we thought he could have a love story. And I thought, "How can he have a love story? He's not the kind of guy who's going to date".

'I thought Five needed to be with someone, whether it be a boy or girl. We thought we had an opportunity with Lila. And we tried it. I don't know how the fans are going to take it.'

Steve added that he thought it was important for the pair to kiss because of their difficult dyanmic, adding that they're 'extreme opposites and they hate each other', but are also 'remarkably similar'.

Despite the age gap relationship, fans were still sad to see the end of the show which first premiered five years ago and many weren't ready to let go of the characters
