Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg cryptically hints at future plans for CBS hit after 'apparent final season'

Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg has cryptically hinted at future plans for the TV franchise - despite having filmed its 'apparent final season.'

The hit CBS series stars Tom Selleck, 79, as the New York City Police Commissioner, with Donnie, 54, as his son, an NYPD detective.

At present the show is now gearing up to air the second half of its two-part 14th season, which has been announced to be its last.

However Donnie, the elder brother of Mark Wahlberg, has suggested the door may be open for more Blue Bloods-related content in future.

He admitted he does not 'know anything officially' but alluded to 'things in the works,' in concert footage a fan posted to Instagram.

Donnie made the remarks onstage during a performance by his musical group New Kids On The Block, which used to include Mark.

At one point in the show, he stopped to answer questions from fans in the audience, one of whom filmed the interaction and posted it online.

An audience member asked about the final half of season 14 of Blue Bloods, which is scheduled for broadcast on CBS from October to December.

'Well, we filmed the apparent last season of Blue Bloods, and it’ll air starting in October. And you know, maybe there’ll be something else after that…' he said slyly as the audience burst into applause, drowning out the rest of the sentence.

'I don’t know anything officially yet, but there’s things in the works, so maybe something awesome will happen,' added the husband of Jenny McCarthy.

He gave no further details, leaving the question up in the air as to whether he was referring to another Blue Bloods season, a movie, a spin-off or a different project.

Blue Bloods revolves around the professional and personal dramas of the Reagans, and Irish Catholic clan whose family business is law enforcement.

The cast includes Bridget Moynahan, who shares a 16-year-old son called Jack with her ex-boyfriend, NFL superstar Tom Brady.

Donnie gave an emotional farewell speech during his last day of shooting on season 14, in heartwarming footage that has surfaced on YouTube.

In tears, he noted that he had watched Tom on television 'as a little boy' and said to him: 'What an honor, sir. What an honor to be led by you.'
