Police are searching a waterway on Sydney's urban boundary after a man crying for help in the darkness apparently disappeared.

Police on boats and in a helicopter scoured the area, while an unoccupied boat and car have been found at the scene.

Emergency services were called to Carinya Road at Picnic Point in Sydney's south-west about 11pm on Saturday.

People nearby had heard a man calling for help from the Georges River, police said in a statement on Sunday morning.

Bankstown police searched the area along with the police helicopter and Marine Area Command.

'An unoccupied boat and black sedan were located in the vicinity a short time later,' police say in the statement.

Police divers appear to be focusing around a roughly-10-metre closed cabin vessel named 'Dee Too'.

'Dee Too' has a white tender dinghy tied to it.
