Kerry Carpenter was affected by injury in 2024 for the second year in a row, this time missing almost three months of action with a lumbar spine stress fracture. He had collected a .914 OPS before getting hurt and didn't miss a beat after returning, putting up a .954 OPS and 10 home runs over his final 133 plate appearances before adding another homer in the playoffs. Carpenter again stood out for his quality of contact, boasting a 46.4 percent hard-hit rate and 17.7 percent barrel rate. The 27-year-old's big bugaboo is that he can't hit left-handed pitching (.408 OPS in 2024) and rarely gets the opportunity to do so. It certainly limits how much volume he's able to provide, and that's even before factoring in Carpenter's increasing injury concerns. That said, Carpenter's 149 wRC+ versus righties since the start of 2023 is the 11th highest in baseball among players with at least 500 plate appearances. When he's in the lineup, he's going to mash.

  • Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: Could face more lefties in 2025

    The Tigers could be open to letting Carpenter face more left-handed pitchers in 2025, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Carpenter saw just 31 plate appearances against lefties last season and is only 24-for-119 (.202 average) in his MLB career versus southpaws. He has crushed righties to the tune of an .897 OPS the last three seasons, but the Tigers may decide to expand his role. Carpenter himself pointed to the success he had against lefties in the minors back in 2022, when he posted a .905 OPS against same-handed pitching. The 27-year-old is still likely to ride the bench often when southpaws start, though if he can prove capable of hitting them to some degree of success, his overall fantasy ceiling would increase because he would have more chances to produce counting statistics.

    Carpenter (hamstring) entered Saturday's 7-3 loss to the Guardians in Game 5 of the ALDS in the top of the fifth inning and went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Carpenter exited the Tigers' Game 4 loss with a left hamstring injury and was viewed as a game-time decision leading up to the series finale, but he was ultimately excluded from the lineup. However, manager A.J. Hinch's choice not to start the left-handed-hitting Carpenter might have made more to do with the matchup against Guardians southpaw Matthew Boyd than the hamstring injury. Carpenter stepped in as a pinch hitter for designated hitter Justyn-Henry Malloy in the fifth inning, with Boyd having already departed the game by that point.
