Tarik Skubal performed at a Cy Young level over 80.1 innings in 2023 following his return from flexor tendon surgery, but many questioned how many innings he would be able to handle in 2024. The southpaw ended up running away with the AL Cy Young Award, shattering all expectations and leading Detroit to its first postseason appearance in a decade. He totaled 192 innings during the regular season -- 42.2 more than his previous career high in 2021 -- and added 19 stellar frames in the playoffs (2.37 ERA, 20:2 K:BB). A power lefty, Skubal can pull the string on a changeup that dances in unexpected ways thanks to a phenomenon now known as seam-shifted wake. He also has a slider to help against same-handed hitters, who combined to slash just .186/.238/.248 against Skubal last season. The Tigers basically took him off the table in discussions at the trade deadline and were justified in doing so, as Skubal is already an ace with the potential to be one of the best starting pitchers in baseball for years to come. If there's anything to nitpick, it might be the modest overall chase rate (77th percentile), but keep in mind his low-whiff sinking fastball is a highly effective offering.

Skubal (hamstring) will start Monday in Game 2 of the ALDS versus the Guardians, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Skubal was lifted from his wild-card series start against the Astros after six scoreless innings and 88 pitches due to some hamstring cramping, but he was never in any danger of missing his first start of the ALDS. Tyler Holton will be the opener for the Tigers in Game 1 before Skubal takes the ball in Game 2 on five days rest.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Battling cramps

Manager A.J. Hinch said after Tuesday's wild-card game against Houston that Skubal is dealing with cramping, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Skubal was able to finish the sixth inning after drawing a visit from the Tigers' training staff, which is a good sign that his removal was precautionary, and he may still be available for the ALDS if Detroit advances. The 27-year-old southpaw earned the win Tuesday after throwing six shutout innings and striking out six batters in the process.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Goes five innings in win

Skubal (17-4) allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven over five innings to earn the win over the Royals on Wednesday. Skubal was pushed back a day after dealing with an injury to his non-throwing hand. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of his last eight starts, though this was tied for his shortest outing in that span. Over that sample, he's allowed 12 runs while posting a 59:8 K:BB across 48.2 innings. Skubal continues to maintain Cy Young credentials this season with a 2.48 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 221:34 K:BB across 185 innings over 30 starts. The Tigers are also just a half game out of the last wild-card spot following Wednesday's action, so Skubal is likely to remain active as long as a playoff spot is up for grabs. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Rays.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: X-rays on hand are negative

X-rays on Skubal's right hand came back negative after he exited Thursday's start against the Rockies, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Skubal was hit on the non-throwing hand by a comebacker in the sixth inning Thursday, though he stayed in the finish the frame. It sounds as through he'll be fine, but he will undergo additional testing to be safe. Skubal yielded just one run on four hits and no walks while limiting the Rockies to one run over six innings in a no-decision. He had thrown just 84 pitches over his six frames, so the lefty might have gone back out for the seventh if not for the hand issue. Skubal is lined up to face the Royals on the road the next time out, as long as his hand continues to check out fine.

Skubal managed to get through five innings on Saturday to become the first pitcher this season to 15 wins. Skubal is expected to get extra rest in between starts the rest of the way, but he doesn't seem to be slowing down much with three wins in his last four trips to the mound. The 27-year-old racked up another eight strikeouts, and he now has eight or more in five of his last six outings.

Skubal has now gone at least six innings in four consecutive starts, going 3-1 over that stretch while posting a 31:7 K:BB. The lefty now has a stellar 2.37 ERA and 132 strikeouts across 110 innings this year, which earned him his first All-Star selection Sunday as well. Skubal has been an excellent fantasy asset, and he's set up to make one more start before the All-Star break, likely on Friday against the Dodgers. It's a tough matchup, but the Detroit ace should remain locked into lineups the rest of the way.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Fans seven in quality start

Skubal came away with a no-decision Tuesday, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings as the Tigers fell 5-3 to the Twins. He struck out seven. While he mostly kept traffic off the bases, a two-run double by Royce Lewis (groin) in the third inning and a solo shot by Manuel Margot in the fifth helped deny Skubal his 10th win of the year. The southpaw did collect his 12th quality start of the season, and he'll take a 2.45 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 119:20 K:BB through 103 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road this weekend in Cincinnati.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Dominates for ninth win

Skubal (9-3) tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Phillies. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out seven. Skubal came into Tuesday in a bit of a slump, as he had allowed nine runs (eight earned) across 10.1 total innings in his previous two starts, which were both losses. The lefty got back on track in a big way, however, with a dominant performance against a tough Philadelphia lineup. It was the sixth time this season that Skubal didn't allow any runs in an outing, which is a big reason why he's sitting with a 2.32 ERA, good for fourth in the majors. Detroit's ace is having an outstanding year, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next scheduled appearance, which is tentatively set for next Tuesday against the Twins.
